Chapter 4 – "The Billionaire Opened a Locked Safe… Inside Was a Letter Written Eight Years Ago That Mentioned a Baby Who Hadn't Even Been Born."

The room went silent.
Elliot read the report again.
Then a third time.
There was no mistake.
SUBJECT ROSIE — RECOVERY BEFORE EIGHTH BIRTHDAY.
Recovery.
Not rescue.
Not protection.
Recovery.
As if Rosie wasn't a child...
But property.
Marcus leaned over the desk.
"The paper is old."
"How old?"
"Our forensic team examined the ink before bringing it up."
He slid another report across the desk.
"The document was printed almost eight years ago."
Elliot looked up slowly.
"That's impossible."
Marcus nodded.
"Rosie is only ten months old."
"I know."
"So how does someone prepare a file for a child seven years before she's born?"
Neither man had an answer.
Across the hall...
Maddie refused to leave Rosie's bedside.
A nurse approached with a tray of warm food.
Chicken soup.
Bread.
Fruit.
Hot chocolate.
The smell filled the room.
Maddie's stomach growled loudly.
She immediately pushed the tray back.
"Can you save it?"
The nurse smiled.
"Of course."
"For later?"
Maddie shook her head.
"For Rosie."
The nurse's eyes filled with tears.
"Honey..."
"The baby can't eat soup."
"I know."
"But maybe tomorrow."
The nurse knelt beside her.
"You can eat first."
Maddie whispered the words she had lived by for months.
"Big sisters eat last."
The nurse quietly walked into the hallway before she started crying.
Elliot watched everything through the glass window.
His chest tightened.
Marcus noticed.
"You've been staring at her for ten minutes."
"I know."
"What are you thinking?"
Elliot answered honestly.
"I'm wondering how many adults failed that child before today."
Neither of them spoke again.
One floor below...
Detectives searched through the belongings collected with Maddie and Rosie.
There wasn't much.
One broken backpack.
Three diapers.
A worn teddy bear missing one button eye.
A plastic spoon.
Two tiny shirts.
An empty formula container.
A city bus pass.
And one sealed envelope.
Yellowed with age.
Across the front, written in familiar handwriting, were five words.
For Elliot. Only Elliot.
Elliot stopped breathing.
He recognized the handwriting instantly.
Emma.
His hands trembled as he broke the faded seal.
Inside...
Three pages.
The first sentence shattered everything he believed.
Elliot, if you're reading this, then they finally found us before I could come home.
His heart pounded.
He continued.
You think I stole your money. I didn't. I stole something much more valuable.
He looked up.
Marcus frowned.
"What?"
Elliot kept reading.
The money was never the target. It was a distraction. Someone inside your company needed everyone looking at missing millions while they moved something else.
Marcus stepped closer.
"What?"
Elliot slowly lowered the page.
"They used the theft to hide another crime."
He turned to the second page.
Emma's handwriting became shakier.
I discovered Project Haven by accident. I wasn't supposed to see those files.
Marcus frowned.
"Project Haven?"
Elliot had never heard the name.
Emma continued.
The board isn't what you think it is. Four directors answer to someone you've never met. They buy companies to hide children.
The room became unbearably quiet.
Marcus looked stunned.
"Hide children?"
Elliot kept reading.
Not trafficking. Worse.
His pulse quickened.
They erase identities. They make children disappear on paper, then sell their futures before they grow up. New names. New families. New inheritances. New lives.
Marcus whispered.
"My God..."
The final page was stained with water.
Or tears.
Several lines were difficult to read.
But one paragraph remained perfectly clear.
If they discover Rosie exists, they will never stop searching.
Elliot froze.
The next line nearly made him collapse.
Rosie isn't dangerous because of who her father is. She's dangerous because of what she inherited.
Marcus stared.
"What inherited?"
Elliot searched the remaining page.
The answer wasn't there.
Instead...
Emma had written only one final instruction.
There is one person still alive who knows the truth. His name is Samuel Brooks. Trust him before anyone else. Even before the police.
Below that...
An address.
Nothing more.
Marcus immediately pulled out his phone.
"I'll find Brooks."
Five minutes later he returned.
His face had changed.
"What?"
Marcus swallowed.
"Samuel Brooks died."
"When?"
"This morning."
Silence.
"No..."
Marcus slowly looked up.
"He died exactly forty-three minutes before Maddie walked into your lobby."
The timing was too precise.
Too impossible.
Someone had silenced the last witness.
At that exact moment...
A nurse burst into Elliot's office.
"Mr. Whitaker!"
He jumped to his feet.
"What happened?"
"It's the little girl."
"Maddie?"
"She's gone."
The room froze.
"What do you mean gone?"
"She was sitting beside Rosie's bed."
"I turned around for less than a minute."
"When I looked back..."
The nurse's voice broke.
"...the window was open."
Marcus sprinted toward the hospital suite.
Security alarms exploded throughout the building.
Doctors rushed into the hallway.
Every elevator locked automatically.
Rosie remained asleep in her crib.
But taped carefully to her blanket...
Was a small folded note.
Written in a child's shaky handwriting.
Elliot unfolded it with trembling hands.
It read:
I'm sorry. They don't want Rosie.
They want me.
If I leave first... maybe she'll finally be safe.
At the bottom...
One heartbreaking sentence was squeezed into the corner of the page.
Please don't let my sister think I abandoned her.
Elliot closed his eyes.
For the first time in years...
The billionaire cried.
Then he opened them again.
His grief disappeared.
Only determination remained.
He looked at Marcus.
"Seal every road leaving Pittsburgh."
Marcus nodded.
"They'll never move that fast."
Elliot picked up his phone.
"No."
His voice turned ice cold.
"They won't."
Marcus frowned.
"What are you doing?"
Elliot dialed a number almost nobody knew he still had.
The call connected after one ring.
A deep voice answered.
"I told you never to call this number again."
Elliot replied with only seven words.
"I need the team you owe me."
The man on the other end went silent.
Then he asked one question.
"How many targets?"
Elliot looked at Maddie's empty chair.
His jaw tightened.
May you like
"As many as it takes."
End of Chapter 4...
