Chapter 6 - The Sabotage

Three days later, the storm broke.

I had spent the last seventy-two hours moving heaven and earth. I brought in top-tier medical consultants from Johns Hopkins to review Anna's chart, moved Sophie into a temporary luxury suite at the Four Seasons with a vetted private nanny, and began secretly drafting emergency guardianship papers through my most trusted legal counsel.

I thought I was moving in the shadows.

I was wrong.

It was Monday morning, and I walked into the grand glass-walled boardroom on the fortieth floor of Harrison Industries. The atmosphere was thick with tension. All twelve members of the board of directors were seated around the massive mahogany table.

At the head of the table sat Arthur Sterling, the senior managing partner and my father’s oldest, most ruthless ally.

"Michael," Arthur said, his voice dripping with icy artificial warmth. "Take a seat. We have an urgent matter to discuss before the market opens."

I sat down, narrowing my eyes. "What is this about, Arthur?"

Without a word, Arthur slid a manila folder across the polished table. It stopped right in front of my coffee cup.

I opened it.

Inside were printed transcripts of my conversation with Anna in Room 412 of County General Hospital. Below the transcripts were crystal-clear photographs of me kneeling beside Sophie, holding her juice box, and copies of Anna’s birth certificate alongside my father's old signature.

The blood rushed out of my head.

"Where did you get this?" I demanded, slamming my hands on the table.

Arthur leaned back, steepling his fingers, a cold, predatory smile playing on his lips.

"It doesn't matter where we got it, Michael. What matters is what it represents. A secret bastard bloodline. An illegitimate granddaughter threatening to stake a claim on five percent of voting shares under archaic trust clauses we thought we buried twenty-five years ago."

"She is a five-year-old child!" I roared, standing up so fast my chair crashed backward onto the carpet.

"She is a liability," Arthur snapped back, his voice rising to match mine. "If the press gets a hold of this before the upcoming merger with global tech giant Apex Corp, our stock will crater by forty percent overnight. The board will not let a dying woman and a street-begging brat destroy what your father spent his entire life building."

The rest of the board members murmured in agreement, their eyes cold and calculating.

"Here is our proposition," Arthur continued smoothly, pulling a second document from his jacket pocket. "You sign this immediate resignation as CEO. You hand over all voting rights to the executive committee. In exchange... the board will quietly set up a modest trust fund for the brat and her mother in some remote town in Montana. Out of sight. Out of mind."

I stared at Arthur, absolute fury surging through my veins. For twenty years, I had played their game. I had climbed their corporate ladder, sacrificed my soul, and chased profits while living a hollow, empty life.

And now, they were trying to use an innocent child as leverage.

"You think you can threaten me?" I whispered, leaning across the table until my face was inches from Arthur's.

"We don't have to threaten you, Michael," Arthur smiled coldly, checking his gold Rolex. "We already leaked the story to the Chicago Tribune. The morning edition hits the stands in one hour."

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

It was an alert from a news app.
