Chapter 4: "He Walked Into the Trap... But the Truth Was Worse Than Death"

Ethan didn't call the police.

He didn't alert the FBI.

And he ignored every desperate plea from his security team.

"If they see a single police car..." he said quietly, "...they'll kill Lily."

Twenty minutes later...

A black Rolls-Royce stopped outside an abandoned Blackwood steel factory on the edge of the city.

The factory had been closed for over a decade after a mysterious explosion killed twelve workers.

Or so everyone believed.

Rain poured from the sky.

Lightning illuminated the rusted entrance.

Ethan stepped inside alone.

The massive steel doors slammed shut behind him.

Click.

The sound echoed like a prison cell locking forever.

Suddenly...

The lights came on.

Dozens of armed men surrounded him.

Standing in the center was Margaret Blackwood.

Elegant.

Calm.

Smiling.

"I knew you'd come."

Ethan's eyes searched the warehouse.

"Lily."

Margaret laughed softly.

"Still choosing others over yourself."

"Just like your father."

"What have you done with her?"

Margaret slowly clapped her hands.

A giant metal container was lowered from the ceiling.

Inside...

Lily sat tied to a chair.

Tears streamed down her face.

"Daddy..."

Ethan instinctively stepped forward.

Immediately, dozens of rifles were aimed at Lily.

Margaret raised one finger.

"One more step..."

"...and your reunion ends here."

Ethan froze.

For the first time in years...

The billionaire who controlled billion-dollar corporations realized he controlled absolutely nothing.

Margaret walked closer.

"Do you know why your father named you heir?"

Ethan remained silent.

"Because he was weak."

"He believed love made people stronger."

She smiled coldly.

"I proved him wrong."

Ethan clenched his fists.

"You murdered him."

Margaret laughed.

"No."

"He signed everything over willingly..."

"...after I showed him something."

She pressed a button.

An enormous projector flickered to life.

Old surveillance footage filled the warehouse wall.

Date:

Eight Years Earlier.

Ethan stared in disbelief.

It was the day of the funeral.

Except...

There was no funeral.

The coffin being lowered into the ground was completely empty.

His breath caught.

"No..."

Another video appeared.

His fiancée...

Emma...

was alive.

Pregnant.

Terrified.

She was being forced into a black van while begging someone not to hurt her baby.

Ethan collapsed to his knees.

"I buried..."

"...an empty coffin."

Margaret nodded proudly.

"For eight years."

"And the entire world believed your family tragedy."

Ethan's voice trembled.

"Where is Emma?"

Margaret smiled.

"You've been asking the wrong question."

She pressed another button.

A hidden steel door slowly opened.

Footsteps echoed through the warehouse.

Everyone turned.

A woman emerged from the darkness.

Her long hair had turned streaks of silver.

Her face carried scars.

Her eyes...

were still the same.

"Ethan..."

His world stopped.

"Emma..."

Lily burst into tears.

"Mom!"

The little girl struggled desperately against the ropes.

Ethan ran toward Emma.

But before they could reach each other...

A deafening gunshot exploded through the warehouse.

Emma gasped.

A red stain spread across her white shirt.

She collapsed into Ethan's arms.

Margaret lowered the smoking pistol.

Still smiling.

"I told you..."

"...only one of them was leaving here alive."

Then, from somewhere high in the shadows...

A calm male voice echoed through the warehouse.

"You're wrong, Margaret."

Everyone looked up.

A figure stepped out onto the overhead steel walkway.

The lights revealed his face.

Margaret's smile vanished instantly.

She whispered in horror,

"Impossible..."

"It can't be..."

The man she claimed had died twenty years ago...

Ethan's father...

May you like

was standing there.

Alive.
