CHAPTER 4 — The Sniper Pulled the Trigger... But Someone Else Took the Bullet

The tiny red laser settled on Ethan's chest.
He didn't notice it.
Margaret did.
For one terrifying second, she thought her aging eyes were playing tricks on her.
Then the dot moved.
From Ethan's shoulder...
To the center of his heart.
Her blood turned to ice.
"Ethan!"
She threw herself across the boy.
BANG!
The stained-glass window exploded.
A bullet screamed through the church.
Margaret felt something tear through her left shoulder.
The force spun her onto the wooden floor.
Pain exploded through her body.
But she didn't let go of Ethan.
She wrapped both arms around him like she had thirteen years ago when she believed the world was still safe.
"Run..." she gasped.
"No!" Ethan cried, trying to lift her.
"Please!"
"Run!"
Another shot shattered the old altar.
Splinters rained through the sanctuary.
Outside, Victor Kane lowered the rifle with visible annoyance.
"I missed."
His partner looked surprised.
"You never miss."
Victor's expression darkened.
"I didn't."
"The woman moved."
He calmly chambered another round.
"This time..."
"...she won't."
Inside the church...
Ethan tore off his flannel shirt and pressed it against Margaret's bleeding shoulder.
"I don't know what to do!"
His hands shook violently.
"You're losing too much blood."
Margaret forced a weak smile.
"You sound..."
"...just like your father."
The words escaped before she could stop them.
Ethan froze.
"My... father?"
Margaret looked into his eyes.
For thirteen years she had buried hope.
Now hope was sitting beside her, terrified.
"I don't care what anyone says anymore."
"I know who you are."
Tears streamed down her face.
"You are my son."
Silence.
The world seemed to stop breathing.
Ethan stared at her.
His lips trembled.
"I've wanted..."
"...my whole life..."
"...for someone to say that."
He broke down.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just silent tears.
The kind children cry when they finally stop pretending they don't need to be loved.
Margaret pulled him close despite the pain.
"I should have found you."
"I'm sorry."
"So... so sorry."
Outside...
Victor's radio crackled.
"Status?"
"I have visual."
"Take the shot."
Victor hesitated.
"The boy is embracing the old woman."
The voice answered coldly,
"I don't care."
"Finish it."
Victor slowly exhaled.
His finger tightened on the trigger.
Then—
BANG!
A second gunshot echoed across the church grounds.
But it hadn't come from Victor's rifle.
His sniper scope exploded into pieces.
Glass sprayed into his face.
"What the—"
A voice thundered from the tree line.
"Federal agents!"
"Drop your weapons!"
Victor cursed.
"Impossible."
Three black SUVs roared through the woods.
Men wearing tactical gear surrounded the abandoned church.
Gunfire erupted from every direction.
Victor's men returned fire.
The quiet forest became a battlefield.
Inside...
Ethan helped Margaret behind a stone pillar.
"What is happening?"
"I don't know."
Gunshots echoed outside.
Then someone kicked open the church doors.
A tall man in a dark tactical vest stepped inside with two armed officers behind him.
"FBI!"
"Lower your weapon!"
Ethan instinctively raised both hands.
Margaret looked up.
The agent removed his helmet.
He was in his late fifties.
Silver hair.
Weathered face.
Sharp blue eyes.
The moment he saw Ethan...
He stopped walking.
His expression changed completely.
"No..."
he whispered.
"It can't be."
Margaret stared.
"You know him?"
The agent swallowed hard.
"I've been looking..."
"...for this child..."
"...for thirteen years."
He slowly reached into his jacket.
Margaret immediately tensed.
Instead of a gun...
He removed an old photograph.
It showed Thomas Collins standing beside another man.
The same FBI agent.
Both smiling.
Both much younger.
On the back of the photo were Thomas's handwritten words:
"To David—If anything happens to me, promise you'll protect Henry."
The agent's hands shook.
"I failed."
Margaret felt dizzy.
"You knew Thomas?"
David nodded.
"He wasn't just my friend."
"He was my partner."
Ethan blinked.
"Partner?"
David looked directly into his eyes.
"Your father wasn't an ordinary mechanic."
"He was working undercover with the FBI."
The room fell silent.
Margaret could barely breathe.
"No..."
Thomas had never told her.
David's voice cracked.
"He infiltrated a child trafficking network hiding behind Briar Creek Development."
"He got close."
"Too close."
"When they discovered him..."
"They staged the car accident."
Margaret covered her mouth.
"They killed him..."
David slowly shook his head.
"Worse."
"They made everyone believe he was dead."
Ethan stared.
"What do you mean?"
David looked haunted.
"We never found Thomas's body."
At that exact moment...
Every light inside the church suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
The emergency radios filled with static.
Outside...
The gunfire stopped.
Complete silence.
Then...
A slow clap echoed from the entrance.
One...
Two...
Three.
A calm voice emerged from the darkness.
"David..."
"You always were late."
The FBI agent's face turned white.
"No..."
"It can't be."
A figure stepped into a beam of moonlight.
Tall.
Broad-shouldered.
Gray at the temples.
Wearing an expensive black suit.
Margaret dropped to her knees.
The man smiled sadly.
"Hello, Maggie."
She couldn't breathe.
The voice...
The eyes...
The face...
Only older.
Tears poured down her cheeks.
"Thomas...?"
The man looked at Ethan.
Then whispered,
May you like
"My son..."
