CHAPTER 3: The Photo That Changed Everything

The police surrounded the black pickup within seconds.

One suspect lay unconscious after being knocked down by the wounded bison.

The other dropped to his knees with his hands in the air.

Walter barely noticed.

His eyes were fixed on the folder an officer had just pulled from the truck.

Across the front, written in thick black marker, were two names.

ETHAN MORGAN.

WALTER HAYES.

Walter felt the blood drain from his face.

"That's impossible..." he whispered.

The officer opened the folder.

Inside were dozens of photographs.

Some were taken only days ago.

Walter driving the school bus.

Walter leaving his small farmhouse every morning at 6:15.

Walter buying groceries.

Walter sitting alone at a diner.

Someone had been watching him.

For weeks.

Maybe months.

Then came the last photograph.

Walter was only twenty-eight years old.

Standing beside another man in front of an old wildlife research station.

The officer looked up.

"Mr. Hayes..."

"Do you know this man?"

Walter stared at the picture.

His hands began to shake uncontrollably.

"I buried him thirty years ago."

Silence.

Every officer exchanged nervous glances.

Because the man standing beside Walter...

Was the same man who had just climbed out of the black pickup.

Only older.

Impossible.

"He... he died in 1996," Walter whispered.

"He fell into the canyon."

"I identified his body myself."

The officer slowly turned toward the suspect.

"What is your name?"

The man smiled.

"My name doesn't matter."

"But Walter knows who I really am."

Walter's knees nearly gave out.

"No..."

"It can't be..."

The stranger leaned closer.

"You left me there."

"You watched me fall."

"And you never came back."

Walter's memories exploded inside his head.

The canyon.

The screaming.

The collapsing bridge.

The terrible choice he had made to save himself.

For thirty years, he had believed his friend was dead.

But the man had survived.

And he had spent three decades planning revenge.

Just then, Ethan quietly stepped forward.

Confused, frightened, he looked from Walter to the stranger.

"Why is everyone talking about me?"

The stranger laughed softly.

"Because none of this was ever about the bison."

He pointed directly at Ethan.

"That boy carries something your grandfather stole from me thirty years ago."

Walter's heart stopped.

"What are you talking about?"

The stranger smiled one last time.

"You'll find out soon enough."

Before anyone could stop him...

He bit down on something hidden inside his mouth.

Within seconds, he collapsed.

Paramedics rushed forward.

But it was too late.

The only person who knew the truth...

Had taken the secret to his grave.

As detectives searched his belongings one final time, they found a small brass key taped beneath the driver's seat.

Attached to it was a faded handwritten note.

"Locker 27. Don't let Ethan open it alone."

Walter stared at the key.

He had never seen it before.

But somehow...

May you like

He already knew opening that locker would uncover a secret powerful enough to destroy everything Ethan believed about his family.
