Chapter 4 - THE SIEGE OF NEWPORT

The hallway outside Leo’s room was pitch black except for the intermittent, strobe-like flashes of muzzle fire bleeding through the high arched windows.

Ronan moved through the shadows with terrifying grace. His SIG Sauer barked twice, the deafening cracks echoing off the marble floors as two Moretti foot soldiers tumbling backward down the sweeping grand staircase, their bodies limp.

“Boss!” Vinnie yelled from the foyer below, ducking behind a heavy mahogany pillar as a hail of submachine-gun fire chewed through the banister. “They’ve got C4! They’re trying to blow the reinforced service doors!”

“Hold the line,” Ronan growled, leaning around the corner and dropping a third gunman with a single, clinical shot to the chest.

The air was thick with the acrid stench of cordite, gunpowder, and burning upholstery. Outside, the rain poured down in sheets, mingling with the blood pooling on the Persian rugs. The Moretti syndicate had miscalculated. They thought Ronan Vale was a broken old ghost living in a museum of his own grief.

They didn't realize that grief was the most dangerous weapon on earth when it finally woke up.

A heavy blast rocked the western wing. Plaster rained down from the ceiling like winter snow. Through the smoke, a massive brute of a man—known as Bruno “The Tank” Rossi—stepped into the foyer, holding a modified riot shield in one hand and a trench shotgun in the other.

“Vale!” Bruno bellowed over the chaos. “Don Salvatore sends his regards!”

Bruno raised the shotgun, aiming straight for the stairs where Ronan stood exposed.

Before Bruno could pull the trigger, a window to the side of the foyer shattered inward. A figure dropped silently from the terrace roof—not Vinnie, and not a Moretti soldier.

It was Elena.

She had ignored Ronan’s command to stay locked in the room. Armed with Ronan’s spare pistol she had found in his desk drawer, she landed in a crouch behind Bruno.

“Hey, ugly!” she screamed.

Bruno whipped around, startled just enough to break his aim.

That microsecond of hesitation was all Ronan needed. He launched himself off the grand staircase, flying through the air like a predatory bird, and slammed both boots directly into Bruno’s chest. The massive man crashed backward, dropping the riot shield with a deafening crash.

Ronan landed on top of him, his fists raining down with brutal, mechanical precision—one, two, three crushing blows that silenced the giant instantly.

The remaining Moretti thugs, seeing their heavy hitter go down in seconds, panicked.

“Fall back! Fall back!” one screamed, turning to run toward the shattered doors.

“Don't let a single one leave,” Ronan said, rising slowly to his feet, his knuckles bruised and bleeding, his face cold as winter ice.

Vinnie and the remaining loyal guards surged forward, cutting off the retreat. Within moments, the shooting stopped. The villa fell back into a heavy, echoing silence, broken only by the crackle of a small fire near the kitchen and the steady patter of rain.

Ronan turned slowly around.

Elena was standing near the shattered window glass, breathing heavily, the pistol still clutched in her trembling hands. Her hair was messy, her waitress apron long since discarded, leaving her in a simple dark sweater and jeans. She looked bruised, terrified, and fiercely alive.

Ronan crossed the blood-slicked floor in three long strides. He grabbed the pistol from her hand, tossed it aside, and gripped her face tightly between his hands.

“Are you out of your goddamn mind?” he shouted, his voice cracking with a raw, terrifying mix of fury and raw panic. “I told you to stay in the room!”

“And sit there while they blew the doors off?” Elena fired back, her green eyes blazing with tears and adrenaline. “I’m not a piece of porcelain on your shelf, Ronan! I don't hide!”

For a second, Ronan stared at her, stunned by the sheer, unyielding grit of the woman.

Then, pulling her against his chest, he crushed her into his body so hard it knocked the wind out of her. He buried his face in her dark hair, inhaling the scent of rain and jasmine, whispering fiercely against her ear:

“If you had died tonight… I would have burned this entire city to ash.”

“Good thing I'm hard to kill, then,” she whispered back, wrapping her arms tightly around his waist.

Across the foyer, Vinnie cleared his throat awkwardly, stepping over a motionless Moretti soldier. “Uh, boss? We got a bigger problem. One of the guys we caught before he passed out… he had a burner phone. The call log shows they weren't just sent by Moretti.”

Ronan slowly pulled back from Elena, keeping one hand protectively on her arm. His eyes narrowed into dangerous slits.

“Who ordered it?”

“Federal prosecutor Miller,” Vinnie said grimly. “The Feds are working with Moretti. They want your entire empire wiped out by sunrise.”
