Chapter 5 - THE PENTHOUSE FIREFIGHTThe silence of the fifty-fourth floor shattered into jagged pieces.

The lead operator’s MP5 barked—a sharp, suppressed thip-thip-thip that chewed through the expensive Italian leather sofa beside Andrew, sending white stuffing and shredded foam exploding into the air.

Andrew didn't hesitate. Years of tactical training at private executive protection ranges—hobbies kept secret from the financial press—kicked in with cold, terrifying precision. He dropped into a classic weaver stance, exhaled sharply, and squeezed the trigger twice.

Bang! Bang!

The first round sparked off the lead operator's ceramic chest plate, staggering him back against the open elevator door. The second round caught the second operative in the shoulder, spinning him into the glass partition with a sickening crunch.

"Get down!" Andrew roared, firing a third shot that shattered the elevator control panel in a shower of blue sparks, locking the doors half-open and trapping the remaining operative in a crossfire of jagged metal.

"They're calling for backup!" Ethan yelled, his small hands flying across the glass coffee table where Andrew’s discarded tablet lay flashing an emergency override alert. "The local precinct has a patrol unit three blocks away—they're compromised, Mr. Whitman! They're taking orders from Vance!"

Andrew lunged backward, grabbing Ethan by the collar of the oversized cashmere sweater and hauling him behind the heavy, reinforced concrete pillar that anchored the penthouse's central load-bearing structure.

Another burst of suppressed gunfire chewed through the drywall above their heads, raining fine white plaster dust over Ethan’s dark hair.

"Can you pilot the private chopper on the roof pad?" Andrew asked, his voice sharp as a razor, his hand ejecting the empty magazine and slamming a fresh one home with a definitive clack.

Ethan’s eyes widened, his mental processing speed working at a terrifying, accelerated rhythm. "The Sikorsky S-76? The autopilot is keyed to your retinal scan, but the manual override sequence was updated last month. I read the maintenance manual while you were in the car. I can fly it."

Andrew stared at the eight-year-old boy in absolute disbelief. "You can fly a helicopter?"

"I told you," Ethan said, a strange, grim smile touching the corners of his pale lips. "Subject 04 had a lot of free time in the simulation labs. Now give me your hand—the roof hatch release code requires your biometric ping to bypass the security lock."

Andrew didn't ask questions. He grabbed Ethan’s small hand, pressing his thumb firmly against the smart-pad embedded in the concrete pillar. The green LED flashed a solid, brilliant blue.

A concealed ceiling panel above them sprang open, revealing a vertical spiral staircase leading directly up into the howling fury of the Chicago storm and the rooftop helipad where a multi-million-dollar bird sat waiting in the dark.

"Move!" Andrew yelled, lifting Ethan bodily onto the first rung of the ladder just as the surviving tactical operative rounded the corner of the hallway, his weapon raised, the green glow of his night-vision goggles locking directly onto Andrew's chest.
