CHAPTER 4 — THE MAN WHO WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO RETURN

Clara's hands refused to stop shaking.
The photograph slipped from her fingers and landed on the hardwood floor.
There she was...
Sleeping peacefully beside Julián.
The image had been taken from inside their bedroom.
Not through a window.
Not with a long-distance lens.
Someone had stood only a few feet away while she slept.
Someone had entered the room without waking her.
Her heart pounded so loudly she was certain the sound would echo through the house.
She forced herself to inhale slowly.
Panic was exactly what they wanted.
She would not give it to them.
One by one, she emptied the contents of the envelope onto the floor.
More photographs.
More dates.
More proof that every movement she made had been documented for years.
She gardening with her mother.
She carrying pottery to an exhibition.
She crying alone after her father's anniversary memorial.
Even moments she believed no one had witnessed.
Then she found something different.
A folded document sealed inside a transparent sleeve.
Across the front, in bold letters, were the words:
CONFIDENTIAL – DO NOT DESTROY
She carefully unfolded it.
It was a private investigative report.
The client name had been blacked out.
The subject's name had not.
CLARA MENDOZA DE ARRIAGA
Her vision blurred.
Page after page described her daily routine.
What time she woke up.
Where she shopped.
Which cafés she preferred.
How long she stayed inside pottery galleries.
Which charities she donated to.
Even personal observations.
"Subject remains emotionally dependent on spouse."
"Subject unlikely to question financial documents."
"Recommend maintaining current psychological dynamic."
Clara felt physically ill.
She wasn't a wife.
She had been a project.
A file.
A target.
A floorboard creaked upstairs.
She immediately stuffed everything back into the envelope.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Someone was awake.
She quietly lowered the hidden compartment and rolled the Persian rug back into place just as the study door handle began to turn.
Clara slipped behind the heavy velvet curtains beside the window.
The door opened.
Julián entered.
He wasn't sleepy.
He wasn't surprised.
He walked directly toward the desk without turning on the lights.
As though he already knew exactly where he was going.
For several silent seconds he simply stood there.
Listening.
Then...
He smiled.
"You can come out now."
Clara stopped breathing.
Had he seen her?
The room remained silent.
Julián chuckled softly.
"I know you're here."
Still she didn't move.
Another long pause.
Then his phone vibrated.
He answered in a whisper.
"No."
"...she hasn't found it."
Clara's eyes widened.
Found what?
He continued.
"The envelope is still there."
"I checked."
"We're fine."
A cold realization swept over her.
He wasn't talking to her.
He had never known she was hiding behind the curtains.
He was checking on something else.
Someone else.
After ending the call, Julián walked out, locking the study behind him.
Clara waited another full ten minutes before daring to move.
The following morning, she drove back to Gabriel's office before sunrise.
She placed the investigative report on his desk.
He read only the first page before looking up sharply.
"Where did you get this?"
"In Julián's study."
Gabriel slowly removed his glasses.
"I recognize this format."
"You do?"
He nodded grimly.
"It was prepared by a private intelligence firm."
"I've only seen reports like this during major corporate espionage cases."
Clara frowned.
"My husband hired investigators... against me?"
Gabriel hesitated.
"I'm not sure he hired them."
"What do you mean?"
He turned to the final page.
"There."
A faded signature.
Almost impossible to read.
He enlarged it on his computer.
The office became completely silent.
Gabriel looked genuinely disturbed.
"This signature..."
"What is it?"
"I know this investigator."
Clara leaned forward.
"Who is he?"
Gabriel swallowed.
"He died eight years ago."
The room fell silent.
"That's impossible."
"I attended his funeral."
Gabriel slowly closed the file.
"So either someone forged his reports..."
"...or someone has been using his identity ever since."
That afternoon, Clara decided to visit the address printed at the bottom of the report.
The office building was abandoned.
Dust covered the windows.
The company logo had long been removed.
Only faded screw holes remained on the wall.
As she turned to leave, an elderly security guard called out.
"Looking for someone?"
She nodded.
"There used to be an investigation company here."
The old man stared at her for several seconds.
"They closed years ago."
"Do you remember the owner?"
"I do."
"What happened to him?"
The guard looked around before lowering his voice.
"He disappeared."
"I thought you said he died."
"That's what the newspapers said."
The old man shook his head slowly.
"But no one ever found a body."
Clara felt the hairs rise on the back of her neck.
Before she could ask another question, the guard reached into his jacket pocket.
"I've been waiting a long time to give this to someone."
He handed her a small yellowed envelope.
"Who left this?"
"He told me if a woman named Clara Mendoza ever came asking..."
"...I was to give her this immediately."
Her heart nearly stopped.
"You know my name?"
"I didn't."
He smiled sadly.
"He did."
Inside her car, Clara carefully opened the envelope.
There was no letter.
Only a small brass key.
And a single handwritten sentence.
'The truth was never hidden in Julián's house... it was buried with your father.'
Clara stared at the words, unable to blink.
Her father had died twenty years earlier.
She had visited his grave every month.
She had brought flowers.
She had spoken to him.
She had cried there.
But suddenly one impossible question consumed her.
May you like
What if the secret she had been searching for...
Had been waiting beneath the cemetery stone all along?
