CHAPTER 2 – The Man Who Stepped Out of the Black SUV Knew Everything

The neighborhood siren was still screaming when the tall gray-haired man closed the door of the black SUV with deliberate calm.
He didn't rush.
He didn't shout.
He simply adjusted the cuffs of his tailored suit and walked toward House 22 as though he had expected this exact scene for weeks.
The neighbors watched from behind fences and windows.
Phones were already recording.
Within minutes, clips from the security cameras were spreading through the neighborhood chat.
Nobody knew the whole story.
But everyone knew they were witnessing something unforgettable.
Diego stood barefoot on the pool deck, dripping water onto the stone tiles.
His face had turned almost white.
Camila couldn't even look up.
"Dad..."
Her voice cracked.
"I'm sorry."
The older man ignored her completely.
Instead, his eyes settled on Diego.
"So..."
he said quietly.
"This is where all those 'late meetings' have been happening."
Diego swallowed hard.
"Sir... I can explain."
The man smiled.
"No."
"I've already heard enough lies."
Renata remained silent.
For the first time since pressing the emergency button, she felt like a spectator inside her own nightmare.
Who was this man?
Why did Diego seem even more terrified of him than of losing his marriage?
The older man finally turned toward Renata.
"You must be Mrs. Salcedo."
She nodded cautiously.
"I'm Arturo Mendoza."
"My daughter has caused you unimaginable pain."
He paused.
"And for that, I sincerely apologize."
Camila burst into tears.
"Dad, please..."
Arturo raised one hand.
"Not another word."
His voice wasn't loud.
It didn't need to be.
Camila immediately fell silent.
Diego tried again.
"This isn't only her fault."
Arturo looked at him.
"I know."
"You've been lying to everyone."
Those words landed like a hammer.
Renata frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Arturo looked at her with genuine sympathy.
"I don't think your husband ever told you how we met."
Diego's breathing became frantic.
"Please..."
"Don't."
Arturo ignored him.
"Three years ago, Diego walked into my office asking for an investment."
Renata blinked.
Investment?
Diego had always claimed he built his construction company from the ground up.
He loved telling people he was a self-made entrepreneur.
Arturo continued.
"He said he needed capital to expand."
"He promised honesty."
"He promised loyalty."
"And I believed him."
Diego lowered his head.
Arturo's expression hardened.
"I invested twenty million pesos."
The neighbors gasped.
Even those pretending not to listen leaned closer.
Renata felt her knees weaken.
Twenty million?
She had no idea.
Not one peso of that money had ever been mentioned.
Diego looked desperate.
"It wasn't like that."
"No?"
Arturo asked.
"Then tell everyone."
"Where did the money go?"
Silence.
Heavy.
Uncomfortable.
Finally Arturo answered for him.
"The business never expanded."
"There were no new offices."
"No additional employees."
"No new equipment."
He pointed toward the luxurious backyard.
"But suddenly..."
"A bigger house."
"A luxury pickup."
"A designer kitchen."
"A swimming pool."
Renata slowly turned toward the shimmering water.
The pool.
The pool she had proudly believed they built together.
She remembered every overtime shift.
Every canceled vacation.
Every bonus she handed to Diego because he insisted they were "building a future."
Her stomach twisted.
"Diego..."
she whispered.
"Tell me he's lying."
Diego couldn't.
Because he wasn't.
Arturo reached into his jacket and removed a thick envelope.
"I brought copies."
He handed them to Renata.
Bank transfers.
Contracts.
Invoices.
Loan agreements.
Her hands trembled as she flipped through page after page.
Each document carried Diego's signature.
The dates matched perfectly.
Every major purchase.
Every unexplained expense.
Every lie.
One document stopped her cold.
Transfer:
330,000 pesos
Purpose:
Swimming Pool Construction
Funding Source:
Mendoza Capital Investment.
Renata stared at the words until they blurred.
She had spent three years believing she had paid for that pool with her annual performance bonuses.
She had skipped vacations.
Worked weekends.
Accepted impossible deadlines.
Meanwhile...
The money had already been sitting in Diego's account.
She hadn't paid for the pool.
She had unknowingly reimbursed him for money that wasn't even his.
Diego stepped toward her.
"I was going to tell you."
"When?"
she asked softly.
"After another lie?"
He reached for her hand.
She pulled away.
Arturo looked at his daughter.
"And you..."
Camila couldn't stop crying.
"I never asked where the money came from."
Arturo nodded sadly.
"That was your first mistake."
Then his face became cold again.
"But not your biggest."
He reached into his briefcase one last time.
This time, instead of documents...
He removed a small velvet box.
Everyone stared.
Camila's eyes widened in horror.
"No..."
Arturo opened it.
Inside lay a diamond engagement ring.
The very ring Diego had secretly bought only four days earlier.
Renata froze.
She had never seen it before.
Arturo placed the open box on the patio table.
"My private investigator found the receipt yesterday."
He looked directly at Diego.
"You told the jeweler it was for your 'future wife.'"
Silence swallowed the backyard.
Renata slowly lifted her eyes.
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
"Future wife?"
Diego couldn't answer.
Camila looked horrified.
"What are you talking about?"
Arturo's gaze shifted toward his daughter.
"You didn't know?"
Camila shook her head.
"No..."
Arturo gave a bitter laugh.
"Interesting."
He turned the receipt around so everyone could read it.
The engraved message was clearly visible.
'To my forever... Sofia.'
Camila stared at the name.
Her tears stopped instantly.
Her entire body went rigid.
"Sofia?"
she whispered.
"Who's Sofia?"
For the first time that evening...
Diego looked truly trapped.
Because both women had just realized the same terrifying truth.
Neither of them had been the only one.
And somewhere...
May you like
There was a third woman who knew nothing about the disaster that was about to explode.
