PART 2 — The Voice Behind the Door

The funeral chapel had never been so quiet.

Not even the sound of someone breathing could be heard.

Everyone stared at the cracked cellphone in Valentina’s small hands.

On the screen was a frozen image of Ofelia Barragán standing in her kitchen.

A baby bottle in one hand.

A small white container on the table.

And the expression on her face…

Was not the expression of a loving grandmother.

It was the expression of someone hiding a secret.

Sofía felt her entire body go numb.

She looked at the phone.

Then at Ofelia.

Then at Mauricio.

Her husband’s face had completely changed.

The confident man who always knew what to say…

The man who had spent months defending his mother…

Was now pale.

Terrified.

—Valentina… turn that off —Mauricio whispered.

The little girl looked at him.

For the first time in her life, she didn’t run to him.

She didn’t ask him for comfort.

She simply said:

—Why, Dad?

That one question destroyed him.

Because there was no anger in her voice.

Only disappointment.

The priest slowly approached.

—Child, what is this recording?

Valentina swallowed hard.

Her hands trembled.

But she refused to put the phone down.

—I recorded it because nobody listened to me.

She looked at the crowd.

—Grandma always told my mom that babies needed “special help” because they cried too much.

A murmur spread through the chapel.

Sofía covered her mouth.

She remembered.

The strange bottles.

The unusual smell.

The moments when Gael and Bruno became weak after Ofelia visited.

But every time she questioned it…

Everyone made her feel crazy.

“You’re tired.”

“You’re imagining things.”

“Your mother-in-law raised children before you.”

“Stop being paranoid.”

And now…

Her seven-year-old daughter had been the only person who believed her instincts.

Valentina pressed play.

The video started.

The image shook slightly.

It was clearly recorded secretly.

A child’s hands holding the phone from behind a kitchen door.

Then Ofelia appeared.

She was preparing a bottle.

—Those babies are destroying my son’s life —Ofelia said.

The entire chapel froze.

Sofía felt like someone had punched her chest.

On the recording, Ofelia continued:

—Since they were born, Mauricio barely visits me. Everything is about Sofía and those children.

The woman opened the white container.

Her voice became colder.

—But soon everything will return to normal.

A woman in the crowd gasped.

—Oh my God…

Mauricio stepped backward.

—This doesn’t prove anything.

But nobody looked at him anymore.

Because the video continued.

Ofelia carefully mixed something into the bottle.

Then she looked toward the camera.

Right toward where Valentina had been hiding.

And smiled.

A smile that made Sofía’s blood turn cold.

The recording suddenly shook.

Then a door opened.

A male voice appeared.

Everyone recognized it instantly.

Mauricio.

—Mom…

The chapel erupted.

Several people turned toward him.

Sofía slowly turned as well.

Her eyes were full of disbelief.

—No…

She whispered.

—No, Mauricio.

Her husband avoided her gaze.

On the video, his voice continued.

—Are you sure this is the only way?

Ofelia looked at him.

—You wanted your old life back.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Then Mauricio’s voice:

—But what if something goes wrong?

Sofía stopped breathing.

Her knees almost gave out.

The man beside her…

The father of her children…

The person who held her while she cried during infertility treatments…

Was standing in a video asking about something going wrong.

The priest grabbed the phone.

—Enough.

He looked at Mauricio.

—Explain this.

Mauricio opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then suddenly…

Ofelia screamed.

—This is edited!

Her voice echoed through the chapel.

—A child cannot understand what she recorded! Someone manipulated her!

She pointed at Sofía.

—She probably forced her daughter to do this because she wants revenge!

Sofía stared at her.

She couldn’t believe what she was hearing.

Even now…

Even after everything…

Ofelia was still attacking her.

But Valentina stepped forward.

—No.

Her voice was stronger than before.

—I did it myself.

Everyone looked at her.

The little girl wiped her tears.

—The night Bruno got sick, Grandma came into my room.

Sofía’s heart stopped.

—What?

Valentina looked at her mother.

—I saw her near the babies’ room.

A cold wave passed through the room.

—She thought I was sleeping.

The girl hugged her backpack.

—I heard her tell Dad that Mom would never find out.

Mauricio’s face changed.

—Valentina, you don’t understand what you heard.

The little girl shook her head.

—No, Dad.

A pause.

—Because I recorded the second time.

Everyone gasped.

The little girl opened another file.

Another video.

This one was darker.

The camera pointed at the hallway of Sofía’s house.

The timestamp appeared.

Three days before the twins died.

The image showed Ofelia walking toward the nursery.

Then Mauricio appeared.

They whispered.

But this time…

The audio was clearer.

Mauricio said:

—After everything is over, she’ll leave. She always said she couldn’t handle being a mother.

Ofelia replied:

—Exactly.

A pause.

Then:

—And you’ll finally have your freedom.

Sofía felt a sharp pain in her chest.

Freedom.

That was the word.

The word that explained everything.

Mauricio never wanted to be a father again.

He wanted his old life.

His career.

His weekends.

His mother’s approval.

And Sofía…

Had become the obstacle.

But then something happened that nobody expected.

The video continued.

Ofelia moved closer to the camera.

And said something that made even her own relatives cover their mouths.

—Once the twins are gone, everyone will blame Sofía.

A pause.

Then she smiled.

—A grieving mother is the easiest person to destroy.

The chapel exploded.

People shouted.

Someone called the police.

But Sofía wasn’t listening anymore.

She was staring at Mauricio.

The man she loved.

The man she trusted.

The man who had slept beside her every night while secretly planning her destruction.

—Why? —she whispered.

Mauricio finally looked at her.

His eyes were full of tears.

But not regret.

Fear.

—Sofía…

She stepped back.

—Why did you let them die?

Mauricio lowered his head.

And then…

He said the sentence that broke her heart forever:

—I didn’t think they would actually die.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because that confession was worse than any accusation.

The police arrived minutes later.

Ofelia was taken away.

Mauricio was questioned.

But before leaving…

Ofelia looked at Valentina.

And smiled.

Not with fear.

With confidence.

As if she still had one last secret.

A secret that could change everything.

That night, while Sofía sat alone in her empty house…

A stranger knocked on the door.

An old woman stood outside holding a folder.

She looked at Sofía and whispered:

—Your children weren’t the first victims.

Sofía froze.

—What are you talking about?

The woman opened the folder.

Inside were photos.

Photos of other babies.

Other families.

And every single picture had one name written on the back:

Ofelia Barragán.

Then the woman said:

May you like

—Your mother-in-law has been hiding this for twenty years.
