CHAPTER 5

The Little Girl Who Saw a Murder—and the Billionaire Who Declared War
The doors of the three black SUVs opened.
One by one, men in dark clothing stepped onto the bridge.
Six.
No…
Eight.
All armed.
Robert cursed under his breath.
“We're outnumbered.”
Emma pulled Lily closer.
The little girl rubbed her eyes.
“Why is everyone angry?”
No one answered.
James stared at the men above them.
For forty-five years, he had built an empire by staying calm under pressure.
But tonight was different.
Because for the first time in his life…
he had something to lose.
A family.
The phone in his hand vibrated again.
Daniel.
James answered.
“You have one minute,” Daniel said calmly.
“You send killers after a child and expect me to negotiate?”
“She isn't just a child.”
“She is my granddaughter.”
Silence.
Then Daniel laughed softly.
“You found out quickly.”
James's grip tightened.
“If you touch her, I swear—”
“You'll do what? Sue me?”
“I'll destroy you.”
This time, Daniel stopped laughing.
“James, everything you own exists because of me.”
“No. Everything I own exists because I trusted the wrong man.”
A long silence.
Then Daniel spoke.
“You always were sentimental.”
“Where is your humanity?”
“It disappeared the day I realized money buys everything.”
James looked at Lily.
“No. There are things money can't buy.”
“Such as?”
“A second chance.”
The line went dead.
Above them, one of the armed men shouted.
“Bring us the girl!”
Robert loaded his pistol.
“Any ideas, boss?”
James looked around.
Old bridge.
River below.
No escape.
Then he saw something.
A maintenance tunnel beneath the bridge.
A narrow steel door.
“Can we get there?”
Robert followed his gaze.
“Maybe.”
“Maybe isn't good enough.”
“It's all we have.”
Another voice echoed from above.
“Thirty seconds!”
Emma's hands trembled.
“We're going to die, aren't we?”
James turned to her.
“No.”
“How can you know that?”
Because suddenly…
he did know.
Because he had already lost one daughter.
And he wasn't about to lose her child.
He looked at Lily.
The little girl smiled sleepily.
“Are we on an adventure?”
The innocence of the question broke something inside him.
He knelt before her.
“Lily…”
“Yes?”
“I need you to be brave.”
“I can be brave.”
He smiled.
“I know.”
She reached out and touched his cheek.
“You're crying again.”
He hadn't realized it.
She frowned.
“Grandpa shouldn't cry.”
Everything stopped.
Emma's eyes widened.
Robert looked away.
James couldn't breathe.
“W-What did you call me?”
The little girl smiled.
“Grandpa.”
Tears filled his eyes.
“You know who I am?”
She nodded.
“Mommy showed me your picture.”
“When?”
“A long time ago.”
“What did she say?”
Lily's voice became soft.
“She said one day you would find us.”
James felt his heart break all over again.
“And she said…”
“What?”
“That you would love me.”
Silence.
No boardroom victory.
No billion-dollar deal.
Nothing in his entire life had ever mattered as much as those words.
A child who had never met him…
had believed in him.
Because her mother believed in him.
He gently kissed Lily's forehead.
“I do love you.”
The little girl smiled.
“I know.”
A gunshot suddenly rang out.
The bullet struck the ground beside them.
“Time's up!” someone shouted.
Robert stood.
“Move!”
They ran toward the maintenance tunnel.
Bullets exploded behind them.
Metal sparked.
Emma screamed.
James lifted Lily into his arms.
For a man who spent his life in offices…
he had never run so hard.
They reached the steel door.
Locked.
Robert cursed.
“We're dead.”
Then—
Click.
The door opened.
Everyone froze.
An elderly man stood inside wearing a maintenance uniform.
“Get in.”
James stared.
“Who are you?”
“No time.”
More gunshots.
“Move!”
They rushed inside.
The old man slammed the door shut.
Darkness.
Silence.
Everyone breathed heavily.
Then the man turned on a flashlight.
And James nearly fell over.
He knew this man.
“Henry?”
The old man smiled sadly.
“Hello, James.”
Henry Collins.
His former accountant.
The man who had disappeared ten years ago.
“You're supposed to be dead.”
“So are a lot of people.”
James stared.
“What are you doing here?”
“Saving your life.”
“Why?”
Henry looked at Lily.
“Because her mother once saved mine.”
Emma frowned.
“You knew Sarah?”
“I knew everything.”
Silence.
Then Henry said the impossible.
“I've been waiting for this night for two years.”
James felt a chill.
“What are you talking about?”
Henry slowly removed an old flash drive from his pocket.
“This.”
“What is it?”
“Proof.”
“Proof of what?”
The old man looked directly into his eyes.
“Proof that Daniel Reeves stole nearly one billion dollars from your company and ordered the murder of anyone who found out.”
Everyone froze.
“One… billion?” Robert whispered.
Henry nodded.
“Sarah discovered the truth.”
“And Daniel killed her for it.”
James's hands curled into fists.
“You've had this for two years?”
“I was hiding.”
“Why didn't you go to the police?”
Henry smiled bitterly.
“Because the police were on Daniel's payroll.”
The tunnel suddenly felt colder.
“How many people are involved?” James asked.
“More than you can imagine.”
Then Henry said something even worse.
“There is someone else.”
James frowned.
“Who?”
“A second partner.”
“What second partner?”
Henry looked at him with pity.
“The person who helped Daniel hide your daughter from you.”
James felt his blood turn to ice.
“No…”
Henry nodded slowly.
“Someone you love.”
Images flashed through his mind.
Old friends.
Employees.
Family.
Then one face appeared.
Impossible.
“No,” he whispered.
Henry's eyes filled with sadness.
“I'm sorry.”
Before James could ask another question—
A loud explosion shook the tunnel.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
The steel door had been blown open.
“They're inside!” Robert shouted.
Flashlights appeared in the darkness.
Footsteps.
Voices.
They had found them.
Henry quickly shoved the flash drive into James's hand.
“You must protect this.”
“I won't leave you.”
“You don't have a choice.”
The old man pulled a small revolver from his jacket.
“Take them and go.”
“No!”
Henry smiled.
“Sarah believed you'd come.”
He looked at Lily.
“And she was right.”
The old man stepped toward the tunnel entrance.
“Go!”
James grabbed Emma and Lily.
They ran.
Behind them—
Gunshots erupted.
Then another.
Then another.
And finally…
silence.
James stopped.
He turned.
The tunnel entrance was empty.
Henry Collins was gone.
The old man had given his life so they could escape.
Lily looked back.
“Where's the nice grandpa?”
No one could answer.
Tears filled Emma's eyes.
Then James looked at the flash drive in his hand.
A tiny piece of metal.
Worth more than every dollar he owned.
Because inside it…
was the truth.
And the truth could destroy empires.
Suddenly his phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
Only six words.
DON'T TRUST YOUR EX-WIFE, CATHERINE.
James stopped walking.
His blood turned cold.
Because Catherine had been living in Paris for six months.
Thousands of miles away.
So why…
did she send him a message three seconds ago?
And then a second message appeared.
Turn around. I'm behind you.
James slowly turned.
At the far end of the tunnel…
a woman stepped out of the shadows.
Elegant.
Terrified.
And holding a gun.
Catherine Mitchell.
His ex-wife.
The woman who had betrayed him.
The woman he thought he would never see again.
She looked directly into his eyes and whispered:
May you like
“James… if you want to save your granddaughter, you have to trust me.”
