CHAPTER 4 — THE BROTHER WHO NEVER STOPPED SEARCHING

The paper trembled in Ryder’s hand.
Not because he was afraid.
Ryder Cole had faced danger before.
He had stared down men with guns.
He had walked into fights where everyone else ran away.
But this…
This was different.
Because the handwriting in front of him belonged to the one person he never stopped looking for.
His little sister.
Lily.
The girl who used to climb onto his motorcycle when she was twelve years old and tell everyone she was going to become “the toughest woman alive.”
The girl who believed her older brother could fix anything.
The girl who disappeared twenty years ago.
Ryder read the message again.
“The man you trusted most was the reason I disappeared.”
His fingers tightened around the paper.
“No…”
The word came out quietly.
Almost like he was trying to convince himself.
Elena watched him carefully.
She knew this moment would come someday.
The moment when Ryder would finally have to face the truth.
“Who?” Ryder asked.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Who did Lily say betrayed her?”
Elena looked down.
“I don’t know if I should tell you.”
Ryder looked at her.
“After twenty years?”
His eyes filled with pain.
“After I buried someone who might still be alive?”
Elena swallowed.
“You need to understand something.”
“What?”
“Lily didn’t disappear because she wanted to leave.”
Ryder froze.
“She was running.”
The words hit him.
“Running from who?”
Elena looked toward the road.
Making sure nobody was watching.
Then she whispered:
“From your best friend.”
A strange silence followed.
Ryder didn’t move.
Because there was only one person who came to his mind.
One person who had been there when Lily vanished.
One person who helped him search.
One person who cried beside him when everyone said she was probably gone.
His name was Daniel Cross.
Ryder’s closest friend.
His brother by choice.
The man who stood beside him through everything.
“No.”
Ryder shook his head.
“Daniel wouldn’t…”
Elena interrupted.
“He knew where Lily was.”
The world went quiet.
Behind him, Tank and Viper exchanged a look.
Because they had never heard Ryder sound uncertain.
Not once.
“Tell me everything.”
Elena took a deep breath.
“Twenty years ago, Lily discovered Charles Whitmore wasn’t just taking houses.”
“What else?”
“He was forcing people into impossible debts.”
She paused.
“Then he would buy their properties for almost nothing.”
Ryder’s face hardened.
“He was stealing.”
“Yes.”
“But why would Lily care?”
“Because she found out one of the families he destroyed…”
Elena stopped.
Ryder waited.
“One of those families was yours.”
Ryder frowned.
“What?”
Elena nodded.
“Your parents’ old property.”
A memory flashed through Ryder’s mind.
A small farmhouse.
His mother’s garden.
His father repairing old cars in the driveway.
The place where he and Lily grew up.
The place that disappeared after their parents died.
Everyone told them it was bad luck.
A bad investment.
A mistake.
But now…
Ryder understood.
It wasn’t a mistake.
Someone took it.
Someone planned it.
“Lily found the documents,” Elena continued.
“She found proof that Charles manipulated the sale.”
Ryder stared at the ground.
“And Daniel?”
Elena looked away.
“He was working for Charles.”
The sentence felt like a bullet.
Ryder stepped back.
“No.”
“He pretended to help Lily.”
“No.”
“He gained her trust.”
Ryder’s breathing became heavier.
“No…”
“And when Lily discovered the truth…”
Elena’s voice broke.
“She disappeared.”
The pink bicycle bell rang softly.
Mira had been riding nearby.
She stopped when she saw Ryder’s face.
“Mr. Ryder?”
He immediately turned.
He forced himself to smile.
“What happened, sweetheart?”
“You look sad.”
The simple words almost broke him.
Because that little girl had spent her whole life seeing sadness.
And somehow she still worried about other people.
Ryder walked over and knelt beside her.
“Sometimes adults lose things.”
Mira looked at him.
“Like money?”
He smiled sadly.
“Sometimes.”
“Like houses?”
His smile disappeared.
“Yes.”
She thought for a moment.
“Can they get them back?”
Ryder looked at the little girl.
At her innocent face.
At the bike she almost sold.
And he made a promise.
“Yes.”
His voice became stronger.
“Sometimes they can.”
That night, the bikers gathered in a small motel room.
On the table were old documents Elena had hidden for years.
Photographs.
Contracts.
Names.
Dates.
And one photo that changed everything.
A young Lily standing beside a man.
Ryder picked it up.
His eyes widened.
Because standing beside his sister…
Was Charles Whitmore.
But that wasn’t the shocking part.
The shocking part was the person standing behind them.
A person Ryder knew.
A person who had been pretending to help him for twenty years.
Daniel Cross.
Tank looked at the picture.
“He was involved from the beginning.”
Ryder said nothing.
He just stared.
Because betrayal from an enemy was easy.
But betrayal from a brother?
That destroyed something deeper.
Then suddenly…
The motel room phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Nobody knew the number.
Ryder picked it up.
“Hello?”
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then…
A woman’s voice whispered:
“Ryder?”
His entire body froze.
Because he knew that voice.
Even after twenty years.
Even after all the nightmares.
Even after believing she was gone.
He knew.
“Lily?”
A shaky breath came through the phone.
Then the voice answered:
“I don’t have much time.”
Ryder grabbed the phone tighter.
“Where are you?”
“Listen to me.”
Her voice trembled.
“Do not trust Daniel.”
Ryder closed his eyes.
“I know.”
A pause.
Then Lily whispered something that made everyone in the room go silent.
“Ryder…”
“Yes?”
“Mira isn’t just Elena’s daughter.”
His heart stopped.
“What are you talking about?”
The line became filled with static.
Then Lily said:
“She is the reason Charles Whitmore tried to erase me.”
The phone went dead.
Ryder slowly lowered it.
Everyone stared at him.
Nobody spoke.
Because they all understood one thing.
The little girl with the pink bicycle wasn’t just a victim.
She was connected to the secret Charles Whitmore had spent twenty years trying to bury.
And now…
May you like
Everyone who knew the truth was in danger.
