Chapter 7 - The Final Audit

Back inside the executive offices of Sterling Tower on the following Monday morning, the city of New York looked sharp, vibrant, and alive against the brilliant autumn sky.
Nathaniel sat at his custom walnut desk, reviewing the final quarterly growth reports for the foundation's community housing initiatives. The numbers were staggering—over five hundred single-parent families housed, vocational training programs operating at a 90% employment placement rate, and public-private partnerships expanding across three major East Coast metropolitan areas.
There was a soft knock on the frosted glass door of his office.
"Come in," Nathaniel called out without looking up from his tablet.
The door clicked open, and Hannah stepped inside, carrying a leather portfolio containing the final audit reports for the downtown center. She wore a tailored navy blazer over a crisp white blouse, her posture exuding effortless confidence and grace.
"Morning, Mr. Sterling," Hannah said with a slight, playful smile, tossing the leather portfolio onto his desk. "If you're done playing spreadsheet solitaire, the board of directors is waiting downstairs for the expansion vote."
Nathaniel looked up, a warm, genuine smile spreading across his face. He leaned back in his leather chair, interlocking his fingers behind his head. "Let them wait a minute. I’m currently conducting a much more important audit."
Hannah raised an eyebrow, leaning against the edge of his desk. "Oh? And what exactly are you auditing?"
"Let's see," Nathaniel murmured, standing up from his chair and walking slowly around the desk until he stood just inches away from her, his grey eyes locked onto hers with quiet intensity. "We started with a broken home, a shattered heirloom, and a world built on lies and arrogance."
Hannah’s smile softened, her hand reaching up instinctively to touch the delicate platinum bracelet resting against her wrist—the one he had slipped on her arm at the gala.
"And what’s the final balance sheet?" she whispered softly.
Nathaniel reached out, gently cupping her cheek with his warm hand, his thumb brushing lightly across her skin.

"Absolute truth," Nathaniel said, his voice deep and unwavering. "A foundation that can never be bought, sold, or broken. And a future where nobody ever has to stand in the shadows again."
Hannah smiled, leaning into his touch as the morning sunlight poured through the towering glass windows of the skyscraper, illuminating a future that was brighter, stronger, and more real than either of them could have ever dreamed.
