Chapter 3 - The Shadow of Richard Vance

“He’s not who you think he is, Ethan. None of this was an accident.”My heart stopped. "What did you just say?"

"Your wife is confused, possibly delirious from the septic fever," Dr. Vance explained quickly, noticing my paleness. "She keeps repeating the name 'Richard Vance' and begging us not to let him near the nursery. Does that name mean anything to you?"

Richard Vance.

The name hit me like a physical blow. Richard Vance was the CEO of Vance Logistics—the parent company of the construction supply warehouse where I worked. He was a billionaire, a local philanthropist, and... Dr. Vance’s surname.

I looked at the doctor. "Is he... related to you?"

Dr. Vance’s expression hardened into stone. "He is my estranged father. Why would your wife be terrified of my father?"

Before I could answer, my phone rang again. It was Detective Harris, the lead detective assigned to the criminal investigation against my mother and sister.

"Ethan," Harris said, his voice tense over the speaker. "We pinged your mother’s phone. She and Ashley just crossed state lines into Indiana. But that’s not all. We ran a background check on the financial transfers into your mother’s bank account over the last 48 hours."

"What did you find?" I asked, gripping the phone tightly.

"Yesterday morning, a wire transfer of $50,000 was deposited into Linda Miller’s account," Detective Harris revealed. "The originating account belongs to a shell company owned by Vance Logistics. Someone paid your mother to destroy your family."

The pieces were swirling around me, forming a nightmare I couldn't comprehend. Why would a billionaire CEO pay my mother to starve my newborn son and let my wife bleed out in a dark bedroom?

I walked slowly into Emily’s ICU room. Monitors beeped rhythmically. She was hooked to blood transfusions, her face still sickly pale, but her eyes were open. When she saw me, tears welled up and spilled over her temples.

"Ethan..." she sobbed, reaching out a weak, trembling hand.

I rushed to her side, kissing her knuckles, holding her cold fingers against my cheek. "I’m here, baby. I’m here. I’m so sorry. I’m so, so sorry I left."

"Noah..." she whispered frantically. "Is Noah alive?"

"He’s in NICU. He’s fighting, Em. The doctors are saving him. But you need to tell me..." I swallowed hard, hating myself for asking, but needing the truth. "Who is Richard Vance? Why did my mother do this?"

Emily’s body began to shake violently. She pulled me closer, her breath hot against my ear, and whispered words that shattered my reality forever:

"Richard Vance... is my biological father. And he didn't pay your mother to ruin us, Ethan... He paid her to kill me before I could sign the inheritance papers."
