Chapter 1 - THE BLOODLINE OF THE CRESCENTThe hum of the Rolls-Royce Phantom’s W12 engine was the only sound inside the leather-lined cabin as it cut through the midnight rain of the outer boroughs. Adrien Cole stared out the tinted window, watching the neon signs bleed into wet streaks of red and blue. His hand rested lightly on Titan’s massive neck. Beneath his palm, the Cane Corso’s thick muscles were taut, twitching rhythmically every time a headlight swept across the interior.

"Marcus," Adrien said, his voice a low gravel that barely disturbed the silence of the car.

"Boss?" Marcus replied from the front passenger seat, keeping his eyes fixed on the rearview mirror.

"Run a full background check on Claire Bennett. Not the clean version the state gives you. I want her tax returns, her medical history, her landlord, every utility bill, every person who’s walked through that shelter's doors in the last thirty-six months. I want to know why a woman running a bankrupt animal rescue in a district controlled by the Moretti family didn't even blink when my team walked in."

Marcus hesitated for a fraction of a second—a micro-hesitation that Adrien’s razor-sharp peripheral vision caught instantly.

"Already initiated, Boss," Marcus said smoothly. "Though... Harmon flagged something before we pulled out of the shelter. Second Chance Haven isn't just hanging on by a thread. It’s sitting on a multi-million-dollar land parcel slated for municipal rezoning next quarter. The city’s tried to buy her out three times. She turned down every offer. Cash, commercial real estate, municipal bonds. Zero."

Adrien narrowed his eyes. The cold calculation that had built the Cole Syndicate from a street-level crew into an international shipping empire clicked into place.

"She’s not just a soft-hearted volunteer," Adrien murmured, his thumb rubbing the rough fur behind Titan’s ear. "Nobody stays in a war zone without armor. Find out who’s funding her."

The car swung sharply onto the private access road leading to the Cole estate—a sprawling, fortress-like limestone compound perched high above the cliffs of the northern harbor. But as the iron gates groaned open, Titan didn't lift his head to look at the familiar high-security perimeter. Instead, the massive dog turned his heavy skull toward the rear window, staring out into the dark highway leading back toward the city, letting out a long, shuddering sigh that sounded suspiciously like grief.
