CHAPTER 5: The Woman Who Made People Disappear

“I helped them do it.”

The words echoed in Daniel's ears.

For a split second, he forgot about the bullets.

Forgot about the black sedan.

Forgot how hard his heart was pounding.

Sophia.

His wife.

The woman he had loved.

The mother of his child.

Had just confessed to working for a secret organization that made people disappear.

“Daniel!” Sophia screamed through the phone.

“Watch out!”

Headlights suddenly appeared in front of them.

A delivery truck was turning into the intersection.

Daniel jerked the steering wheel.

The car skidded sideways.

Lily screamed.

Emma grabbed her and held her tightly.

The tires shrieked against the wet pavement.

For one terrifying moment, it looked as if they would crash.

Then—

The car narrowly missed the truck.

They spun once and slammed into the curb.

Everything went silent.

Steam rose from the hood.

The engine died.

“Oh God…” Daniel whispered.

Behind them, the black sedan slowed.

Its headlights illuminated their broken car.

Then the driver's door opened.

A man stepped out.

He wore a dark coat and black gloves.

Even from a distance, his face looked familiar.

Emma's eyes widened.

“No…”

Daniel turned to her.

“What?”

She stared through the shattered window.

The man was walking toward them.

Slowly.

Calmly.

As if he had all the time in the world.

Emma's hands trembled.

She knew that face.

Older.

Thinner.

But unmistakable.

“It can't be…”

“Emma?”

She looked at him, terrified.

Then she signed two words.

My brother.

Daniel froze.

“You have a brother?”

Emma nodded, tears filling her eyes.

Had.

She swallowed hard.

He died ten years ago.

The man outside stopped walking.

As if he had heard her.

Then he smiled.

A cold, sad smile.

And suddenly…

Emma knew.

The man she had buried ten years ago was standing twenty feet away.

Her older brother.

Michael Carter.

The man she had mourned.

The man her parents had buried.

The man who was dead.

No wonder Sophia had run.

No wonder she had hidden.

Nothing about their family was what it seemed.

Daniel's phone was still connected.

“Sophia…” he whispered.

She was crying.

“He found you.”

“You know him?”

A long pause.

Then:

“Yes.”

“How?”

“He's the reason I ran.”

Emma felt sick.

Michael reached the driver's side of the car.

He knocked gently on the window.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Like an old friend visiting.

Lily hid her face against Emma's chest.

“Daddy…”

Daniel's hands shook.

“Who is that?”

“I don't know.”

But Emma did.

And the fear in her eyes said everything.

Michael raised one hand.

Then slowly held up three fingers.

Three.

He lowered one finger.

Then another.

A countdown.

Daniel understood immediately.

He wanted them out of the car.

Or else.

“Get down,” he whispered.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

The final finger lowered.

Michael sighed.

Then he pulled a gun from inside his coat.

Lily started crying.

At that exact second—

Headlights exploded from the opposite side of the street.

Another car.

Moving fast.

Very fast.

It slammed directly into the black sedan.

CRASH!

Metal screamed.

Glass shattered.

Michael stumbled backward.

A woman's voice shouted:

“GET OUT OF THE CAR!”

Daniel looked up.

The driver's door of the new vehicle flew open.

A woman stepped out.

Dark coat.

Long hair.

Face hidden beneath a hood.

She pointed another gun at Michael.

“Move!” she yelled.

The voice.

Daniel's heart nearly stopped.

No.

Impossible.

The woman lowered her hood.

And the world seemed to stop turning.

Sophia.

Alive.

Standing in the middle of the street.

Rain dripping from her hair.

A gun in her hands.

Tears in her eyes.

Lily looked up and gasped.

“Mommy?”

Sophia's face broke.

She almost dropped the weapon.

For six years she had dreamed of hearing that word again.

“Lily…”

Michael recovered first.

He raised his gun.

Sophia fired.

BANG!

The bullet hit the pavement inches from his foot.

“Don't!” she screamed.

Michael looked at her.

Not angry.

Not surprised.

Just… disappointed.

“You should have stayed hidden.”

Sophia's hand trembled.

“I won't let you hurt them.”

“You don't have a choice.”

“I do now.”

For a moment, brother and sister simply stared at each other.

Daniel couldn't move.

Emma couldn't breathe.

Because nothing made sense anymore.

Sophia slowly lowered her gun.

Tears streamed down her face.

“You were supposed to be dead.”

Michael gave a sad smile.

“So were you.”

Silence.

Then he looked at Emma.

His little sister.

The one who believed he had died ten years ago.

For the first time, regret appeared in his eyes.

“I'm sorry, Emmy.”

Emma burst into tears.

Nobody had called her Emmy since childhood.

“How?” she signed desperately.

“How are you alive?”

Michael looked away.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“We were all lied to.”

The rain seemed to stop.

Sophia's face went white.

“No…”

Michael nodded.

“The bodies.”

“The graves.”

“The accidents.”

“None of it was real.”

Daniel stared at him.

“What are you talking about?”

Michael looked at all of them.

Then said quietly:

“The Black Bird has been replacing dead people for thirty years.”

Silence.

“What?”

“New identities. Fake deaths. New lives.”

Emma's knees nearly gave out.

Sophia started crying.

“No…”

Michael looked directly at her.

“You weren't recruited by them because of your skills.”

She stared at him.

“You were born into it.”

The world stopped.

“No…”

“You and I…”

He swallowed.

“…we are Black Birds.”

A deafening silence filled the street.

Emma looked from one sibling to the other.

Unable to understand.

Then Michael turned to her.

And delivered the cruelest revelation of all.

“And you, Emma…”

May you like

His voice broke.

“…you were never supposed to survive.”
