There were no rented chandeliers. No champagne towers. No dramatic stage performances or celebrity secretaries wearing stolen family heirlooms.
Instead, the event featured actual engineers in hard hats, municipal leaders, and independent scientists reviewing real data on industrial-scale battery safety.
Julian Vance stood beside Marin near the edge of the observation platform, watching the massive hydraulic drills begin driving steel pilings into the bedrock.
“I have to admit, Marin,” Julian said, raising his voice slightly over the rumble of heavy machinery. “When you pulled that thirty million on stage, half the venture capital community thought you had lost your mind.”
Marin smiled, her breath pluming softly in the cool morning air. She wore a simple camel-wool coat and her grandmother’s emerald ring catching the bright autumn sun.
“They thought I was reacting to a heartbreak, Julian,” Marin replied, her eyes fixed on the horizon where the new facility’s structural skeleton was rising against the sky. “They didn't understand that I wasn't destroying a marriage. I was finally auditing one.”
Julian chuckled, shaking his head. “And Cross?”
“Serving a federal sentence in upstate New York,” Marin said calmly. “Without bail, without a corporate lawyer, and without anyone left to sell his stories to.”
She turned her gaze back toward the construction site, watching a crane hoist a massive steel beam into place. Every rivet, every bolt, every calculation belonged entirely to her family’s legacy—earned, tested, and protected by absolute truth.
