Chapter 4 - THE DEAD MAN WALKINGSecurity pulled up the hallway surveillance footage from the midnight visitor.

Both Claire and I stared at the screen in absolute horror.

The man who had dropped off the envelope was Daniel Mercer—my late father’s longtime private investigator.

"That's impossible," Claire whispered, gripping my arm. "Official police records said Daniel died in a fiery car crash twelve years ago. They never even recovered a body."

When Margaret saw Daniel’s face on the monitor, she lost the last vestige of her composure, collapsing into a chair as she wept. She admitted that Daniel had originally been hired to find her firstborn child. Years later, Daniel had returned to report that the girl was dead.

Now, a dead man had walked back into our hospital, asking specifically about Hannah’s twins.

Before we could process the implications, a hospital security guard approached us, holding a heavy brass key and a folded note he had found hidden inside the lining of Hannah’s winter coat when it was checked into storage.

I took the note, unfolded it, and read the first line out loud. The entire corridor fell into a dead, suffocating silence.

"The twins are not the first Caldwell twins hidden by this family."
