Chapter 1 - The Shattered IllusionThe silicone belly lay on the polished hardwood floor like an amputated piece of a stranger.

For three endless seconds, the dining room of the Hawthorne estate was stripped of all sound, save for the ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner. Nathan remained frozen, his knuckles white where he gripped the edge of the carved mahogany dining table. His eyes—bloodshot, wide, and vacant—were locked onto the beige, lifelike prosthetic shell resting near Vanessa’s satin heels.
It looked sickeningly real. Even from a distance, the texture mimicked human skin, complete with faint, delicate blue veins painted near the surface.
Nathan’s jaw worked silently, forming words that refused to come out. His chest heaved as a cold, paralyzing terror began to flood his veins. All the late nights. All the gentle, protective touches. All the times he had swallowed his own mounting suspicions, convincing himself that he was just an anxious, inexperienced first-time father—all of it collapsed into dust in a single, agonizing heartbeat.
"Vanessa..." Nathan’s voice finally cracked, a hollow, splintered sound that barely resembled human speech. He slowly straightened up, his knees trembling as he turned to face his wife. "What... is that?"
Vanessa didn't answer. She stood paralyzed, her chest rising and falling in shallow, frantic gasps. The armor she had worn for months—the delicate, fragile expectant mother routine that had shielded her from every interrogation—had been stripped away in an instant. Her carefully styled hair framing her pale face couldn't hide the absolute panic blazing in her eyes.
"Nathan, please—" Vanessa choked out, taking a desperate half-step forward and reaching out a trembling hand. "Let me explain. It’s not what you think..."
"Not what I think?" Nathan’s voice erupted, the shock instantly morphing into a raw, volcanic fury. He lunged forward, his face contorting with a rage so violent that his own mother gasped and covered her mouth. "You lied to me! For six months, you lied to my face! You used a piece of plastic to make me think I was going to be a father!"
"Nathan, stop!" Vanessa shrieked, backing away until her spine hit the heavy oak sideboard, sending a crystal water pitcher crashing to the floor. Shards of glass exploded across the Persian rug, but nobody flinched.
Ethan stood quietly a few feet away, his expression grim, cold, and entirely unreadable. He didn’t look triumphant; he looked like a judge presiding over an execution he knew was long overdue. He slowly slipped the tiny metal safety pin back into his jacket pocket, his gaze never leaving Vanessa’s trembling form.
"You didn't just lie to Nathan," Ethan spoke up, his calm, measured voice cutting through the chaos like a razor. "You used that phantom pregnancy as a weapon. Every time Nathan tried to look closer at your sudden wealth, your mysterious disappearances, or your late-night 'work trips,' you played the victim card. You trapped him with a ghost."
Nathan turned his fiery gaze toward Ethan, his chest heaving. "You knew," Nathan breathed, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. "Ethan... you knew all along."
"I didn't know for sure until tonight," Ethan admitted, stepping closer to his brother and placing a firm, grounding hand on Nathan’s shoulder. "But the math never added up, Nathan. A woman six months pregnant doesn't skip a single prenatal checkup. Her posture doesn't stay that rigid. And most importantly... human skin doesn't stay that unnaturally smooth and firm when carrying a child, no matter how much lotion she uses."
Nathan looked back down at the silicone shell on the floor, then up at Vanessa. The illusion was gone. The woman standing before him wasn't the mother of his child—she was a stranger wrapped in an elaborate, calculated web of deceit.
"Get out," Nathan whispered, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register. He pointed a trembling finger toward the grand double doors of the dining room. "Get out of my house. Right now."
"Nathan, please, just listen to me for five minutes!" Vanessa sobbed, hot tears finally cutting tracks through her makeup. She slid down the side of the wooden sideboard until she was kneeling on the shattered glass, ignoring the tiny cuts forming on her palms. "I had a reason! I didn't want to do this, but I had no choice!"
"A reason?" Nathan let out a harsh, broken laugh that sounded dangerously close to a sob. "What possible reason could there be for faking a pregnancy?! Did you want my money? My inheritance? What did you steal from me, Vanessa?!"
Vanessa shook her head frantically, her teeth chattering as she looked around the room at the stunned, disgusted faces of the entire family. Her father-in-law was glaring at her with undisguised contempt; her mother-in-law had turned her face away in shame.
"It wasn't about the money," Vanessa whispered, her voice dropping so low it was barely audible.
Ethan narrowed his eyes, stepping forward until he loomed over her kneeling figure. "Then what was it, Vanessa? Because whatever secret you’re hiding behind that silicone belly... you’re about to tell us right now. Or I swear to God, I’ll call the police and let them drag you out in handcuffs."
May you like
Vanessa swallowed hard, her eyes darting toward the open window as if contemplating jumping through it. The silence stretched, thick and suffocating, before she finally lifted her chin. The panic in her eyes was replaced by a cold, desperate terror.
"You think I wanted to fake a pregnancy?" Vanessa hissed, a bitter smile twisting her lips. "You fools think I did this for fun? If I hadn't pretended to carry Nathan's child... both of us would be dead right now."
