Chapter 5 - SILENCE AT THE RIDGE

The gunshot echoed wildly inside the corrugated iron walls of the mill.

Everyone froze. A guard standing near the entrance collapsed to the ground, clutching his leg.

From the shadows near the doorway stepped Walter Lawson. He was breathing heavily, holding a vintage hunting rifle in his pale, trembling hands. His face was ghastly white, but his eyes burned with a furious, unyielding light.

"That's enough lies, Christian!" Walter shouted, his voice echoing over the roar of the water below.

"Father?" Christian said, his calm mask slipping into genuine surprise. "How did you get out of the house?"

"I might be sick, but I'm not blind," Walter wheezed, keeping the rifle trained on his youngest son. "I knew Martha gave me laced tea last night. I threw it out." Walter turned his gaze toward me, his expression tortured. "Jennifer... Christian is lying to twist your mind. I loved Brandon more than my own life. I tried to stop them, but I was too weak, too terrified of the scandal. I let my silence make me an accomplice to my son's murder. I won't let my silence kill my grandson too."

"You senile old fool!" Martha shrieked, dropping all pretense of elegance. "Put that gun down!"

"Shoot him, Christian!" Martha ordered, her voice shrill and unnatural. "Shoot him now! He's ruined everything!"

Christian hesitated for a fraction of a second, torn between the deeply ingrained instinct of obedience to his father and his own desperate greed. That fraction of a second was all Marcus needed.

Marcus lunged forward, tackling Christian to the concrete floor. The gun in Christian's hand discharged wildly, the bullet ricocheting off an iron beam with a deafening PING.

"Run, Jennifer! Take Toby and run!" Marcus roared, wrestling Christian for control of the weapon.

The remaining guards drawn their weapons, but Walter fired another round into the air, forcing them to take cover behind heavy wooden crates.

"Go, Jennifer!" Walter cried, turning his rifle toward the guards. "The key Marcus gave you—it opens safe 408 at the Union Bank in Pine Ridge! Everything Brandon gathered is in there! Expose them all!"

I grabbed Toby's hand. "Come on!"

We sprinted through the side emergency exit, bursting out into the freezing night. Behind us, a terrifying chorus of gunfire, shouting, and glass shattering echoed through the woods. I didn't look back. I gripped Toby’s hand so tightly my knuckles turned white, running blindly through the dark trees toward the main road.

Toby was crying silently, running as fast as his little legs could carry him. "Mommy, what about Grandpa? What about Mr. Marcus?"

"Just keep running, baby! Don't look back!"

We reached the highway just as a pair of headlights swept across the asphalt. It was a local police cruiser making its night rounds.

I threw myself into the middle of the road, waving my arms frantically. The cruiser slammed on its brakes, tires screeching to a halt just inches from us.

"Help us!" I screamed, banging on the hood. "Please, God, help us!"

The officer stepped out, weapon drawn, looking confused and alarmed. "Ma'am, what's going on?"

Before I could explain, the distant sound of an explosion rocked the woods behind us. A brilliant orange plume of fire leaped into the night sky over the timber mill.
