Chapter 3 - Breach in the Core

“Stay behind the island,” Gabriel commanded in a low, lethal whisper.

Before Claire could move, Gabriel’s hand dipped beneath the marble overhang, drawing a matte-black Sig Sauer pistol from a magnetic holster with terrifyingly smooth efficiency. The casual, corporate billionaire facade vanished entirely, replaced by the lethal, hyper-focused posture of a combat veteran.

The ambient lighting flickered back on—not with the warm white glow of the smart system, but with a harsh, blinking crimson emergency grid. Across the penthouse, the floor-to-ceiling smart glass windows suddenly frosted over from transparent to opaque, sealing them off from the outside world.

“System override: User Varrick-Admin locked out,” a synthetic, automated voice echoed from the hidden ceiling speakers.

Gabriel’s jaw tightened. He tapped his encrypted earpiece sharply. “Marcus? Leo? Status.”

Only static hissed back in response. The comms were jammed.

“They didn't break through the exterior doors,” Claire said, her analytical mind overriding her panic as she crouched behind the massive marble block. “The biometric scanner at the elevator... it requires your thumbprint, or a secondary cryptographic key injected directly into the mainframe.”

Gabriel glanced down at her, a flicker of dark approval crossing his eyes. “Someone on my internal security detail flipped. Or they captured Marcus.”

Suddenly, the heavy sound of heavy boots echoed down the long hallway leading from the private elevator. Thud. Thud. Thud. Heavy, deliberate, and armored.

Gabriel moved with silent speed, sliding along the edge of the kitchen wall until he reached the corner that intersected the main corridor. He raised his weapon, his breathing slow and controlled.

Claire’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She looked down at the open dossier on the island, her eyes catching the glowing screen of Gabriel's open laptop. Despite the lockout, the machine’s local terminal was still blinking, processing an automated data extraction script from an external source plugged into the building's server room two floors down.

They aren't here to kill us yet, she realized with a jolt of adrenaline. They’re here to buy time for a complete data download.

“Gabriel!” Claire hissed softly, pointing frantically toward the laptop. “They’re siphoning the core defense algorithms! If that progress bar hits one hundred percent, the encryption keys self-destruct, and your entire database goes live to the black market!”

Gabriel didn't take his eyes off the dark hallway. “How long?”

“Forty-five seconds!”

At that exact moment, a blinding flash illuminated the hallway as a breaching charge blew the reinforced double doors of the master study off their hinges. Wood splinters and shrapnel rained down the corridor, accompanied by the cold, mechanical clack of assault rifles being unslung.

“Hold your position!” Gabriel roared, and before Claire could blink, he stepped out into the open hallway and opened fire.
