CHAPTER 3 — They Didn't Come for the Debt... They Came for the Secret

The first rifle butt slammed against the front door hard enough to shake the entire house.
Dust drifted from the ceiling beams.
Another blow.
Then another.
Carmen stood frozen in the middle of the living room, Professor Navarro's letter still trembling in her hands.
Outside, Don Esteban Vargas' booming voice cut through the mountain air.
"Open the door, Mateo! We know she's inside!"
The horses in the barn began kicking their stalls in panic.
Every instinct told Carmen to hide.
Instead, she hurried to the window.
Six armed men surrounded the ranch house while another searched the stable. Their pickup trucks blocked the only road leading down the mountain.
This wasn't a visit.
It was a siege.
Then she spotted Mateo.
He was sprinting across the fields with unbelievable speed, leaping over stone fences and cactus patches despite the steep terrain. Sweat soaked his flannel shirt, and one hand remained pressed tightly against the side of his head.
He saw the trucks.
His face turned pale.
He knew exactly why they had come.
The front door exploded inward.
Splintered wood scattered across the floor.
Don Esteban Vargas stepped inside first, dressed in polished leather boots and an expensive hat that looked strangely out of place on the dusty ranch.
Behind him entered Ramiro.
Carmen's older brother.
The same brother who had laughed while she was traded for eighty-five thousand pesos.
He looked around the house with open disgust.
"So this is where they keep you."
Carmen stared at him in disbelief.
"You sold me."
Ramiro shrugged.
"It paid Father's debt."
His eyes drifted toward the envelope in her hand.
Then his expression changed.
"What are you holding?"
Without answering, Carmen instinctively hid the letter behind her back.
Don Esteban noticed immediately.
His smile disappeared.
"Give me that paper."
She took one step backward.
"No."
His eyes narrowed.
"I wasn't asking."
Outside, Mateo reached the front porch.
He burst through the broken doorway.
The room fell silent.
Everyone turned.
The enormous farmer stood breathing heavily, dirt covering his clothes, his fists clenched so tightly that his knuckles had turned white.
Don Esteban laughed.
"The deaf fool finally arrives."
Mateo didn't react.
His eyes searched only for Carmen.
She lifted the envelope slightly.
His expression filled with horror.
She understood.
Whatever was written inside...
It was worth killing for.
Don Esteban noticed the silent exchange.
"So she found it."
He slowly removed a revolver from beneath his jacket.
Ramiro took a frightened step backward.
"Boss..."
"Too late now."
He pointed the gun directly at Mateo.
"You should have burned those papers years ago."
Carmen's heartbeat thundered in her ears.
She looked from the gun...
To Mateo...
Then back to the unfinished letter.
One sentence near the bottom caught her eye.
It had been underlined twice.
Never let Vargas obtain my research. The parasite is not natural.
Parasite?
Research?
Her eyes widened.
The strange creature inside Mateo's ear...
Someone had put it there.
It hadn't happened by accident.
Mateo slowly raised both hands.
Not in surrender.
He began signing.
His movements were quick, urgent, desperate.
Carmen frowned.
She didn't understand sign language.
Don Esteban did.
For the first time since entering the house...
The powerful landowner looked uneasy.
Mateo continued signing.
Again.
And again.
Don Esteban's confident smile slowly faded.
"What nonsense."
Mateo signed one final sentence.
Don Esteban suddenly shouted,
"Shut up!"
The room froze.
Even Ramiro looked confused.
The deaf man hadn't spoken a single word.
Yet somehow...
Whatever he had silently said had terrified the richest man in the valley.
Don Esteban fired.
The gunshot echoed through the mountains.
Carmen screamed.
Mateo threw himself sideways.
The bullet shattered a bookshelf instead of striking his chest.
Hundreds of books crashed onto the floor.
Glass exploded.
Pages filled the air like frightened birds.
In the chaos, Carmen grabbed the fallen notebooks and the envelope.
She ran toward the back door.
Ramiro lunged after her.
She slipped through his grasp and burst into the courtyard.
Behind her came shouting.
Another gunshot.
Then another.
She raced toward the old barn.
Halfway there, she heard someone whistle sharply.
One of the ranch dogs—a massive German Shepherd she had barely seen since arriving—burst from behind the stable.
Instead of attacking her...
The dog positioned itself between Carmen and the armed men.
Growling.
Its teeth bared.
Three more dogs emerged from the shadows.
Then another.
Within seconds, five powerful ranch dogs formed a protective circle around Carmen.
The gunmen hesitated.
Even Don Esteban cursed under his breath.
"They've trained them."
Inside the house, Mateo slammed a heavy oak table across the broken doorway, buying Carmen precious seconds.
He turned toward the shattered bookshelf.
One notebook had opened by itself.
A folded map slipped onto the floor.
Across the top, in Professor Navarro's handwriting, were four chilling words.
Project Black Hive — Restricted Site
Below the title...
A red circle marked a location deep within the mountains.
Less than five kilometers from Mateo's ranch.
His eyes widened.
For eighteen years he had believed the laboratory no longer existed.
He had been wrong.
Very wrong.
Outside...
A distant mechanical rumble rolled through the valley.
Everyone stopped moving.
The sound grew louder.
Not thunder.
Not trucks.
Helicopters.
Three black helicopters appeared above the mountain ridge, descending toward the ranch with frightening precision.
Don Esteban looked up.
For the first time in decades...
Fear replaced arrogance.
He whispered only one sentence.
May you like
"They found us before we found him..."
