CHAPTER 5 – “THIS CHILD WAS NEVER YOURS”… AND THE SECRET THAT DESTROYED EVERY LIE

The photograph slipped from Julián's hand.

It landed in the mud.

For a moment, nobody moved.

The rain had stopped, but the night suddenly felt colder.

Julián stared at the stranger.

"What did you say?"

The man looked at him calmly.

"I said the child isn't yours."

"You're lying."

"I wish I were."

Valeria had finally arrived with the police. She stepped out of the car, soaked from the rain.

When she saw the photograph, her face turned white.

The stranger noticed.

"You recognize it."

"No…" she whispered.

But her trembling hands betrayed her.

Julián looked at her.

"Valeria?"

She couldn't meet his eyes.

A terrible silence settled between them.

The stranger slowly introduced himself.

"My name is Esteban Salazar."

"Who are you?" Julián demanded.

Esteban took a deep breath.

"I've been searching for that child for six weeks."

"Why?"

"Because he belongs to my family."

Carmen gasped.

Valeria closed her eyes.

And that frightened Julián more than anything.

"Say something," he whispered to his wife.

Tears filled her eyes.

"I… I can't."

The world seemed to stop.

"You can't… what?"

She began crying.

"I never wanted you to find out like this."

His heart pounded.

"Find out what?"

She looked at him.

And then she said the words that shattered him.

"Mateo isn't biologically yours."

Everything went silent.

Even the wind seemed to stop.

Julián felt as though someone had punched him in the chest.

"No."

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

"I'm sorry."

"No."

He took a step backward.

"You're lying."

"I wanted to tell you."

"When?"

She couldn't answer.

"When?!"

She broke down.

"Before you came home."

His hands trembled.

Thirty-four years old.

A soldier.

A husband.

A father.

And in one night, every truth he knew had disappeared.

"You cheated on me?"

She looked horrified.

"No! Never!"

"Then whose child is he?"

The stranger answered instead.

"My son's."

Everyone turned toward him.

"My son, Daniel."

Julián's blood boiled.

"Who the hell is Daniel?"

Esteban's face darkened.

"He died seven months ago."

Silence.

"He was a journalist."

Valeria suddenly looked up.

"He wasn't supposed to die."

Julián froze.

"You know him?"

She nodded slowly.

The pain in her eyes was real.

Too real.

Esteban continued.

"Before his death, my son investigated a criminal organization that trafficked children and forged identities."

The police officers exchanged glances.

"He discovered something dangerous."

"What does this have to do with my wife?" Julián asked.

The older man looked directly at Valeria.

"Everything."

Tears streamed down her face.

Three years earlier, before she had ever met Julián, Valeria had worked as a nurse in a private clinic in Mexico City.

That clinic secretly sold newborn identities to wealthy families.

She had discovered the truth.

And so had Daniel Salazar.

They worked together to expose it.

During the investigation…

they fell in love.

The relationship lasted only a few months.

Then Daniel disappeared.

Valeria never saw him again.

Months later, she learned she was pregnant.

At almost the same time…

she met Julián.

The man who treated her with kindness.

The man who loved her.

The man who offered her a future.

She had planned to tell him the truth.

Again and again.

But every time she tried…

she was afraid.

Afraid he would leave.

Afraid she would be alone.

Then she learned something even more terrifying.

The criminal organization had discovered that she was carrying Daniel's child.

And they wanted the baby.

Because Daniel had hidden evidence before he died.

Evidence that could destroy them.

And somehow…

they believed the key to finding it was connected to his son.

Julián could barely breathe.

"So… you married me… while carrying another man's child?"

Valeria burst into tears.

"I loved you."

He looked away.

"I never meant to hurt you."

The pain in her voice was unbearable.

But the pain in his chest was worse.

Then Esteban said quietly:

"She didn't lie because she wanted your money."

Everyone looked at him.

"She lied because she was trying to survive."

Silence.

"And because she believed my son was dead."

Julián looked at Mateo.

The tiny baby sleeping in Carmen's arms.

He remembered the first time he held him.

The first tiny smile.

The sleepless nights.

The dreams.

The promises.

Then a thought hit him.

Hard.

He looked at Valeria.

"Did you ever love me?"

She stared at him.

Then answered without hesitation.

"Every single day."

Tears filled his eyes.

"Even knowing he wasn't mine?"

"Especially then."

The night became silent again.

Finally, Esteban stepped closer.

"There is something else."

Nobody wanted to hear more secrets.

But he continued.

"The organization that killed my son believes Daniel left evidence hidden somewhere."

"What kind of evidence?" a police officer asked.

"A list of names."

"Names of who?"

"Judges. Politicians. Doctors. Police officers."

The officer's face changed.

"If that list becomes public, dozens of powerful people will go to prison."

"And they think the baby leads to it?"

Esteban nodded.

"My son left me one message before he died."

He reached into his pocket and unfolded a piece of paper.

On it were only five words.

Protect my son at all costs.

Silence.

Then another vehicle appeared on the road.

This time it wasn't an SUV.

It was an ambulance.

The rear doors opened.

A young female officer jumped out.

She looked terrified.

"Mr. Medina!"

Julián turned.

"What happened?"

"We just received a call."

"About what?"

She swallowed hard.

"About your house."

His heart sank.

"What now?"

The officer's voice trembled.

"There was a fire."

Everyone froze.

"What?"

"The entire house is burning."

Carmen nearly dropped the baby.

Tomás stepped forward.

"My house?"

The officer nodded.

"It started less than ten minutes ago."

Then she said the words that sent fear through everyone.

"And according to the witness…"

She paused.

"...someone was still inside."

The night fell silent.

May you like

Because only one person had been left behind.

Patricia.
