CHAPTER 2 — THE RECORDING THAT WAS NEVER MEANT TO EXIST

Mariana didn't sleep.

She sat on the cold floor beside Emiliano's mattress, gently stroking his tangled hair while pretending to rest. Every few minutes, the little boy jerked awake in panic, shielding his face with both hands before realizing she was still there.

Only then would he whisper one heartbreaking word.

"Mommy..."

It was as if his mind couldn't believe she was real.

Mariana kissed his forehead.

"I'm here now. I promise."

He slowly fell asleep again, his tiny fingers gripping the sleeve of her sweater as though letting go meant losing her forever.

But Mariana wasn't watching her son.

She was watching the blinking red light hidden inside the small voice recorder concealed behind the loose wooden headboard.

Waiting.

Listening.

Praying.

Just after midnight, footsteps echoed through the hallway.

Heavy footsteps.

Rodrigo.

Another pair followed.

Paulina.

A third.

Teresa.

Mariana quietly tucked Emiliano beneath the damp blanket before slipping into the adjoining storage room she had discovered earlier that evening. Through a narrow crack in the old wooden door, she could see the hallway leading to Emiliano's room.

The three stopped only a few feet away.

Teresa crossed her arms.

"She came back sooner than expected."

Rodrigo rubbed his temples.

"I know."

"You should have stopped her at the airport," Teresa snapped.

"I couldn't."

Paulina laughed softly.

"It doesn't matter."

"She's already seen the boy."

"Nobody will believe her."

Rodrigo wasn't smiling.

"You don't understand."

"Mariana isn't stupid."

"If she starts asking questions..."

Teresa interrupted him.

"Questions require evidence."

"And evidence disappears."

Mariana felt every muscle in her body tense.

Rodrigo lowered his voice.

"The marks on the wall..."

"We should repaint tomorrow."

"And throw away that filthy mattress."

Paulina nodded.

"I'll buy another one."

"A nicer one."

"So the room looks normal."

Teresa scoffed.

"Why waste money on that child?"

"He'll be gone soon anyway."

Mariana stopped breathing.

Gone?

Rodrigo looked around nervously before whispering,

"The institution called yesterday."

"They still have a place available."

Paulina smiled.

"Perfect."

"Once he's admitted, nobody will question anything."

"They'll say he's mentally unstable."

"And Mariana?"

Rodrigo's answer chilled the air.

"We'll convince everyone she's having a breakdown."

"She spent two years overseas."

"She became obsessed."

"We'll tell the court she imagined the abuse."

Teresa nodded approvingly.

"Exactly."

"Nobody believes emotional mothers."

Mariana's nails dug into her palms until they bled.

They weren't only abusing Emiliano.

They were preparing to erase him forever.

Paulina suddenly frowned.

"But what about Grupo Villarreal?"

"If Mariana audits the company..."

Rodrigo smirked.

"She won't."

"I've already transferred nearly eighteen million dollars."

Mariana's heartbeat stopped.

Transferred?

"Where?"

Paulina asked.

Rodrigo smiled proudly.

"Three shell companies."

"Everything looks like international consulting expenses."

"And once the merger closes next month..."

"We disappear."

Paulina wrapped her arms around his neck.

"You really are brilliant."

Teresa chuckled.

"My son finally chose the right woman."

Mariana felt physically sick.

For two years she had worked sixteen-hour days in Singapore.

She had skipped birthdays.

Anniversaries.

Christmas.

Everything.

Believing she was building a better future for her family.

Meanwhile...

Rodrigo had been stealing the company she inherited from her late father.

Paulina suddenly looked toward Emiliano's door.

"What if the brat talks?"

Teresa smiled with terrifying calm.

"He won't."

"I taught him."

Rodrigo frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Teresa walked to the bedroom door and rested one hand against it.

"Every time he cried for Mariana..."

"I locked him inside."

"Sometimes for hours."

"Sometimes all night."

"If he spoke during dinner..."

"He didn't eat."

"If he looked at Bruno..."

"He slept outside the room."

Paulina burst into laughter.

"No wonder he crawls instead of walking."

Teresa smiled proudly.

"Dogs crawl."

"So does he."

Mariana bit her own wrist to stop herself from screaming.

Inside the bedroom, Emiliano shifted in his sleep.

A tiny frightened voice escaped his lips.

"Sorry..."

"I'm sorry..."

Rodrigo glanced toward the room.

"For God's sake, keep him quiet."

"He gives me a headache."

Teresa shrugged.

"I'll handle it."

She reached for the doorknob.

Mariana's entire body froze.

If Teresa entered now...

She would find Mariana missing.

Everything would be over.

The doorknob slowly turned.

One inch.

Two.

Three.

Then—

A loud cry echoed from downstairs.

"Waaah!"

Bruno.

Paulina immediately spun around.

"My baby!"

She hurried down the stairs.

Rodrigo followed.

Teresa hesitated for one long second before sighing and walking away.

The hallway fell silent.

Mariana remained hidden for almost five minutes, barely daring to breathe.

Only after the voices disappeared did she crawl out.

Her hands shook violently.

The recorder was still blinking.

Everything...

Every disgusting word...

Had been captured.

She carefully removed the memory card and slipped it into the lining of her passport wallet.

Then she looked toward the sleeping little boy.

Emiliano had curled into a tiny ball again.

His cheeks were wet with tears.

Even asleep...

He was crying.

Mariana knelt beside him.

"I have you now."

"No one will ever lock you in again."

The next morning, she pretended nothing had happened.

She smiled at breakfast.

Complimented Teresa's coffee.

Asked Paulina where she had bought her dress.

Even apologized for "overreacting" the day before.

Rodrigo visibly relaxed.

"See?"

He laughed.

"I knew you'd come to your senses."

Mariana smiled sweetly.

"I've been thinking."

"Maybe you're right."

"Perhaps Emiliano really does need professional help."

Teresa nearly applauded.

"I knew you'd understand eventually."

Rodrigo reached across the table and squeezed Mariana's hand.

"I'm proud of you."

She squeezed back.

Inside, she was counting.

Three...

Two...

One...

Her phone vibrated silently beneath the table.

A single encrypted message appeared from Lucía.

RECORDING RECEIVED.

I've already made three secure copies.

But Mariana...

There's something even worse.

Our forensic accountant found one payment Rodrigo tried to hide.

It wasn't sent to a shell company.

It was sent directly to someone inside the National Child Protection Agency.

Mariana stared at the screen.

Her blood ran cold.

This was no longer just child abuse.

Someone inside the government had been paid.

And if Lucía was right...

Emiliano hadn't been abandoned by the system.

May you like

He had been sold by it.
