CHAPTER 5 — The Hospital Record That Should Have Never Existed

Ricardo stared at the computer screen without blinking.

The words refused to make sense.

Elena Morales.

Former Maternity Nurse.

San Gabriel Hospital.

His fingers slowly tightened around the edge of his desk.

It couldn't be a coincidence.

Out of every hospital in Mexico City...

why had Elena worked at the very hospital where he had been born?

And why had she warned Adriana never to tell him the truth?

He clicked deeper into the archived records.

Most of Elena's employment history had been erased.

Entire years were missing.

Several files were marked CONFIDENTIAL.

Others had simply disappeared.

Only one document remained.

Resigned unexpectedly.

Date: September 18, 1981.

Exactly three days after Ricardo's birth.

His heartbeat quickened.

Three days.

Not three years.

Not three months.

Three days after he entered the world...

the nurse who cared for newborns had vanished from the hospital forever.

Just then, Mauricio knocked gently.

"The investors are waiting."

Ricardo didn't even look up.

"Reschedule everything."

"Again?"

"Everything."

Mauricio hesitated.

"This deal is worth almost four hundred million dollars."

Ricardo quietly replied,

"So?"

The answer stunned him.

he would have canceled Christmas before canceling a business meeting.

Something inside him had begun to change.

An hour later, Ricardo sat alone in his private office.

For the first time in decades...

he opened the drawer he never touched.

Inside lay a faded photograph of his late mother.

Isabel Álvarez smiled warmly while holding a newborn wrapped in a white hospital blanket.

Him.

Or at least...

the baby he had always believed was him.

His mother had died when he was only nineteen.

There was no one left to ask.

He flipped the photograph over.

His mother's handwriting covered the back.

"My miracle. My greatest blessing."

Ricardo swallowed hard.

She had loved him with every part of her soul.

If there truly had been a secret...

had she known?

Or had she been another victim?

Across the city...

Adriana stood in line outside a neighborhood pawn shop.

The small velvet pouch felt unbearably heavy in her hands.

Inside rested the only wedding ring her late husband had ever given her.

She stared at it for a long moment.

"I promised I'd never sell you," she whispered.

"But the children need a home."

She stepped inside.

The elderly shop owner examined the ring carefully.

"This is real gold."

Adriana nodded silently.

"It's worth much more than you think."

"I only need enough to pay the rent."

The man looked at her kindly.

"Are you sure?"

"No."

"But I have no choice."

He sighed and counted several bills onto the counter.

Adriana accepted the money with trembling hands.

As she turned to leave...

she quietly kissed the ring one last time.

It felt like saying goodbye to her husband all over again.

At that exact moment...

a black luxury SUV stopped across the street.

Ricardo had followed her again.

He hadn't planned to.

He simply couldn't stop thinking about her family.

When he saw her leave the pawn shop wiping tears from her face...

his chest tightened.

He walked inside moments later.

The owner recognized him immediately.

"Mr. Álvarez..."

Ricardo placed the ring on the counter.

"I want to buy it."

The old man frowned.

"It isn't for sale."

"It is now."

He placed a thick envelope of cash beside it.

"I'll pay ten times what you gave her."

The owner slowly pushed the envelope back.

"No."

Ricardo blinked.

"No?"

"Some things aren't merchandise."

"That woman didn't sell a ring."

"She sold the last piece of her husband."

The words landed like a punch.

"Do you know her?"

The old man nodded.

"Everyone around here knows Adriana."

"She works until her hands bleed."

"She feeds other people before herself."

"She never asks anyone for help."

He lowered his voice.

"If this neighborhood has one saint..."

"It's her."

Ricardo felt ashamed.

Only yesterday...

he had called that same woman a thief.

Before leaving...

the shop owner added quietly,

"If you really want to help her..."

"Don't buy what's left of her past."

"Help protect what's left of her future."

Ricardo walked out without the ring.

For once...

money had failed him.

That evening...

Adriana returned home carrying groceries.

Fresh vegetables.

Milk.

Medicine.

Bread.

The children laughed with excitement.

"Mama!"

"We can have pancakes tomorrow!"

She smiled.

"Only if you help me make them."

The tiny shack filled with laughter.

For a few precious minutes...

poverty disappeared.

Then...

someone knocked violently on the door.

Three loud bangs.

Everyone froze.

Adriana slowly opened it.

The landlord stood outside with two large men.

"I warned you."

"You have until tomorrow morning."

"If the rent isn't paid..."

"We're tearing this place down."

The children clung to their mother's legs.

"Please," Adriana begged.

"I have part of the money."

"I'll have the rest soon."

The landlord shook his head.

"No more promises."

As he turned to leave, his eyes fell on Elena's oxygen machine.

"You'd better move fast."

"Old people don't survive on the street."

The men laughed.

Then they disappeared into the darkness.

That night...

after everyone had fallen asleep...

Elena quietly reached beneath her mattress.

She pulled out an old yellowed envelope tied with a faded blue ribbon.

Inside were photographs...

hospital documents...

and one birth certificate.

Her trembling hands rested on the papers.

She whispered to herself,

"I can't take this secret to my grave anymore."

Outside...

unseen in the darkness...

Ricardo sat inside his parked car across the street.

He had planned to leave hours ago.

Instead...

he found himself watching the tiny shack with a feeling he had never experienced before.

Not suspicion.

Not anger.

Not curiosity.

Responsibility.

He still didn't know why.

But deep inside...

he felt that whatever was hidden inside that old envelope...

was about to change both their lives forever.
