CHAPTER 5 – THE SECRET SON AND THE FINAL BETRAYAL

“Hello… sister.”

The words echoed through the smoke-filled hospital room.

Claudia stared at the man holding the gun.

Her entire body went numb.

“No…” she whispered.

It couldn't be.

Eduardo Salazar had died fifteen years ago in a boating accident.

She had seen his picture in the family home.

Candles had been lit for him every year.

Doña Irma had cried for him.

Rogelio had mourned him.

And now…

he was standing there.

Alive.

Smiling.

With a gun in his hand.

“Impossible,” Rogelio whispered.

Eduardo's smile widened.

“Hello, little brother.”

Rogelio looked as if he might faint.

“You died…”

“That's what everyone needed to believe.”

Doña Irma burst into tears.

“My son…”

“Don't call me that,” Eduardo said coldly.

The room went silent.

“You stopped being my mother a long time ago.”

Gabriel struggled to his feet despite the blood spreading across his shirt.

“You're still working for Helix.”

Eduardo laughed.

“Working? No.”

He lowered the gun.

“I run it.”

The entire room froze.

Even Esteban looked horrified.

“No…” he whispered.

Eduardo turned toward him.

“You seem surprised.”

“You were just a child.”

“Yes. A child your company experimented on.”

Silence.

A terrible silence.

Claudia slowly looked at Doña Irma.

The older woman couldn't meet her eyes.

“What is he talking about?”

Doña Irma began shaking.

“Tell her,” Eduardo demanded.

“Please…”

“Tell her!”

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

Then, finally, she spoke.

“Twenty-six years ago… I couldn't have children.”

Claudia frowned.

“But you have Rogelio and—”

“No.”

The old woman sobbed.

“They aren't my biological sons.”

The room exploded into silence.

“What?” Rogelio whispered.

“I adopted both of you.”

His face turned white.

“You lied to us?”

“I wanted a family…”

Claudia's heart pounded.

Then she realized something.

If Eduardo wasn't her biological son…

why had he called her sister?

As if reading her thoughts, Eduardo smiled.

“Because we share the same father.”

The world seemed to stop.

Claudia couldn't breathe.

“No…”

He looked directly into Gabriel's eyes.

“You should tell her.”

Gabriel lowered his head.

And that silence was enough.

Tears filled Claudia's eyes.

“No… no…”

Gabriel finally spoke.

“Before I met your mother… I had another child.”

The room began spinning.

“A son.”

Eduardo.

Her half-brother.

The man pointing a gun at her.

Twenty-seven years earlier, Gabriel had a brief relationship with a young laboratory assistant.

She became pregnant.

But both mother and child disappeared before he even knew they existed.

Years later, he discovered the truth.

The assistant had died.

The baby had been secretly placed into an adoption program.

And that child…

was Eduardo.

The same child later adopted by Doña Irma.

The same child eventually recruited by Project Aurora.

The same child who spent his entire life believing he had been abandoned.

“You left me,” Eduardo said, his voice trembling.

“I didn't know you existed,” Gabriel replied.

“Liar!”

“I searched for you!”

“Too late!”

For the first time, anger disappeared from Eduardo's face.

Only pain remained.

“They told me you abandoned me because I wasn't special enough.”

Gabriel's eyes filled with tears.

“Son…”

“Don't call me that!”

Eduardo's hand trembled around the gun.

“They took me when I was sixteen. They told me everything. They said I had a sister with miracle blood… and a father who loved her but didn't want me.”

Claudia felt her heart break.

A lifetime of lies.

A lifetime of manipulation.

Helix had turned an abandoned boy into a weapon.

Suddenly, one of the masked men stepped forward.

“Sir, we need to leave.”

Eduardo ignored him.

He looked only at Claudia.

“You know what's funny?”

She couldn't answer.

“I spent my entire life hating you.”

Tears rolled down her face.

“But tonight… I finally met you.”

Silence.

“And I don't hate you anymore.”

Everyone stared at him.

“I hate him.”

He pointed the gun at Gabriel.

“He's the reason all of this happened.”

“Eduardo…” Gabriel whispered.

“You had your perfect family.”

“That isn't true.”

“You had a wife. A daughter. A life.”

“And I lost all of them.”

“Not enough.”

The gun trembled.

“Twenty-seven years of pain isn't enough.”

Then something unexpected happened.

Claudia stepped forward.

“Don't.”

Eduardo looked at her.

“He's still your father.”

“He stopped being my father long ago.”

“You don't know that.”

She took another step.

“You think you're alone?”

He stared at her.

“I spent twenty-three years believing my mother abandoned me and my father was dead.”

Tears streamed down her face.

“I know what it feels like to be left behind.”

For the first time, Eduardo's expression softened.

“We're both victims.”

Silence.

“Helix stole your life… and mine.”

The gun lowered slightly.

“We don't have to keep losing each other.”

The room became still.

“You're my brother.”

He closed his eyes.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

A tear rolled down his cheek.

And then—

BANG!

The gun fired.

Claudia screamed.

But Eduardo wasn't the one who pulled the trigger.

One of the masked men had.

The bullet hit Eduardo in the chest.

He looked down in shock.

The man lowered his weapon.

“Helix doesn't leave loose ends.”

Everything happened at once.

Gabriel lunged forward.

Rogelio attacked another guard.

The room erupted into chaos.

But Claudia saw only one thing.

Her brother collapsing.

She caught him before he hit the floor.

Blood stained her hands.

“No… no… please…”

Eduardo looked at her.

A weak smile appeared on his face.

“Sister…”

“Don't talk.”

“I always wondered…”

His breathing became shallow.

“…what it would feel like to have family.”

Tears poured down her face.

“You do have family.”

He smiled again.

For the first time in his life…

he looked peaceful.

“Then… I guess… I wasn't alone after all.”

His hand slipped from hers.

And everything went silent.

Hours later, police swarmed the hospital.

The Helix agents were arrested.

Esteban surrendered and agreed to reveal everything he knew.

Project Aurora was exposed to the world.

And three days later…

Claudia stood on a cliff overlooking the sea.

Beside her stood Gabriel.

Her father.

Alive.

In front of them was a small grave.

Eduardo Gabriel Vargas.

A man who spent his entire life searching for a family he never knew he had.

Gabriel placed white flowers on the grave.

Then he looked at Claudia.

“Your mother is waiting.”

She froze.

“You really found her?”

He smiled through tears.

“Yes.”

“Where is she?”

He pointed toward the road.

A small car had just stopped.

The driver's door opened.

A woman stepped out.

Her hair had turned gray.

Her face showed the scars of time.

But her eyes…

Claudia knew those eyes.

They were her own.

The woman took one trembling step.

Then another.

Tears streamed down her face.

“Claudia…”

The world disappeared.

“Mom…”

Twenty-three years of pain.

Twenty-three years of questions.

Twenty-three years of waiting.

Ended in a single embrace.

And for the first time since that terrible anniversary night…

Claudia finally understood something.

The cream had been meant to destroy her.

Instead…

it burned away every lie.
