Chapter 7 - The Shadows LengthenThree months later, the fallout had settled into a new, terrifying normal for the Manhattan elite.

The Callaway name was no longer just powerful; it was absolute. With Roman Callaway gradually stepping back from daily operations due to undisclosed health complications, the board of directors unanimously voted Evelyn Callaway as Co-CEO alongside him.
The gossip columns stopped mocking her background and began whispering about her ruthlessness. No one crossed Evelyn Carter—now Evelyn Callaway—without facing swift, devastating corporate and legal exile.
On a freezing Tuesday evening, Evelyn stood in the penthouse office of Callaway Tower, staring out at the snow beginning to blanket the city streets.
A soft knock sounded at the door. Roman’s personal physician, Dr. Sterling, walked in, his expression solemn.
Evelyn didn't turn around immediately. "How is he?"
"Mr. Callaway's condition has deteriorated faster than expected," Dr. Sterling said quietly. "The heart medication is no longer stabilizing his vitals. He has perhaps a few weeks left, Mrs. Callaway."
Evelyn turned slowly, her face masking a complex storm of emotions. When she had entered this marriage, it was a transaction of vengeance and survival. But over the last ninety days, Roman had become something unexpected—an ally, a mentor, and the only person in the world who understood the true cost of survival in a world of wolves.
"Make sure he is comfortable," Evelyn instructed evenly. "And clear my schedule for tomorrow morning. I need to visit him at the private estate."
"Understood," Dr. Sterling replied, pausing at the door. "One more thing, ma'am. There is a visitor downstairs waiting in the lobby. Refusing to leave until he speaks with you."

Evelyn raised an eyebrow. "Who?"
"Your mother, ma'am. And she brought someone with her."
