CHAPTER 7: THE DETECTIVE'S FATHER WASN'T THE MASTERMIND... HE WAS HIS NEXT VICTIM

The photograph changed everything.
Detective Laura Hayes stared at her father's younger face standing beside Pastor Daniel Carter.
"I need answers," she whispered.
Within an hour, they arrived at the retirement home where former Police Chief Robert Hayes had been living quietly for the past five years.
But something was wrong.
His room was empty.
The bed was still warm.
The window had been forced open from the outside.
On the floor lay a broken pair of reading glasses... and a single drop of fresh blood.
"He was taken less than thirty minutes ago," Laura said, her voice shaking.
The home's security cameras had been erased.
Except for one corrupted frame.
A black SUV.
The same one Ethan had seen outside the lakeside cabin.
Inside Robert's desk, Ethan discovered a hidden false drawer.
It contained an old police badge...
A revolver that had never been officially registered...
And a sealed envelope labeled:
"Only open if Daniel returns."
Laura carefully unfolded the letter.
Her father's handwriting was unmistakable.
Laura... if you're reading this, I failed.
I spent twenty-three years pretending to protect the people who destroyed innocent families.
I wasn't one of them.
I was blackmailed.
Ethan looked up in shock.
Robert had investigated Michael Brooks' death.
Not to hide the truth...
But because Daniel had kidnapped Laura when she was only six years old.
The criminals gave him an impossible choice:
Cover up the murder...
Or never see his daughter alive again.
Robert obeyed.
But secretly, he copied every piece of evidence.
He spent decades collecting names, bank records, recordings, and photographs, waiting for the right moment to expose them.
At the bottom of the letter was one final sentence.
"The evidence isn't in my house... it's beneath Michael Brooks' grave."
Laura gasped.
"They hid everything in your father's cemetery?"
That same night, Ethan and Laura raced to the cemetery with a court order.
Rain poured as workers carefully lifted the old stone monument.
Beneath it was a rusted steel box sealed in concrete.
Inside were dozens of hard drives, handwritten journals, offshore bank records, and one VHS tape simply marked:
FOUNDATION.
When they played the tape at police headquarters, the screen flickered to life.
A younger Pastor Daniel appeared.
But he wasn't speaking.
He was sitting silently at the end of a long conference table.
Eleven powerful people surrounded him.
Judges.
Business tycoons.
Hospital directors.
Politicians.
Then someone entered the room.
Every person immediately stood up.
Even Daniel lowered his head in fear.
The camera captured only the newcomer's shoes.
Expensive black leather.
Then his voice echoed through the speakers.
"Loose ends create investigations."
"Families create witnesses."
"So remove the families."
The screen went black.
No face.
No name.
Only one signature appeared before the recording ended.
THE FOUNDATION
Detective Laura slowly closed the laptop.
"This was never about your family's inheritance."
Ethan stared at the frozen screen.
"It was an organization."
"One that's been operating for decades."
Just then, alarms erupted throughout police headquarters.
Hackers had breached the evidence servers.
Every file connected to The Foundation began deleting itself.
Computers shut down one after another.
Emergency lights flashed red.
Then every monitor in the building displayed the same chilling message:
"STOP DIGGING, ETHAN BROOKS."
May you like
"YOUR MOTHER WAS OUR FIRST FAILURE."
"YOU WILL BE OUR LAST."
