CHAPTER 2: THE MAN WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

Mauricio Cárdenas slept peacefully that night.
For the first time in months, he felt free.
No more questions.
No more suspicious looks from Valeria.
No more pretending to be a loving husband.
The woman who knew his secrets was gone.
And soon, everyone would believe it was a tragic accident.
A pregnant woman lost in a mountain storm.
A heartbreaking story.
A terrible tragedy.
Exactly the kind of tragedy people remembered for a few weeks…
And then forgot.
That was the plan.
Inside the luxury cabin, Mauricio sat beside the fireplace with a glass of expensive whiskey in his hand.
Across from him, Ximena Salgado smiled.
She looked completely different without having to pretend.
No innocent employee.
No respectful assistant.
No shy woman hiding behind polite smiles.
Tonight, she looked like someone who had just won a prize.
And in her mind…
She had.
“Do you realize what we have now?” Ximena whispered.
Mauricio looked at her.
“Everything.”
She smiled.
“Fifty million dollars.”
Mauricio corrected her.
“Not just fifty million.”
He leaned closer.
“Her shares in the company. Her properties. The investments under her name.”
Ximena’s eyes widened.
“You planned all of this.”
Mauricio smiled.
“I planned it for two years.”
Two years.
That was how long Mauricio had been preparing his wife’s death.
Two years of fake affection.
Two years of pretending to be the perfect husband.
Two years of slowly convincing everyone that Valeria was fragile, emotional, and unstable.
He had even convinced some people that pregnancy had changed her personality.
“She’s always anxious.”
“She imagines things.”
“She doesn’t handle stress well.”
Those were the lies he repeated until people started believing them.
And now…
Those lies would become the foundation of his escape.
But Mauricio didn’t know one thing.
The mountain had not taken Valeria.
It had given her back.
Hours earlier…
The helicopter landed near a private medical facility hidden in the mountains.
The rescue team moved quickly.
“Blood pressure dropping!”
“Prepare surgery!”
“Her baby’s heartbeat is unstable!”
Doctors rushed Valeria through the doors.
But the silver-haired man refused to leave.
He stood frozen in the hallway.
Watching strangers fight to save the daughter he had spent sixteen years searching for.
The daughter he thought he would never see.
His name was Alejandro Robles.
A name almost everyone in Mexico knew.
Founder of one of the largest investment groups in the country.
A man who had disappeared from public life fifteen years earlier after a mysterious family tragedy.
The media believed he had abandoned his wife and daughter.
They were wrong.
The truth was much darker.
Sixteen years ago, Alejandro’s wife died under suspicious circumstances.
The official report said it was an accident.
But Alejandro never believed it.
Because before her death, his wife had told him something terrifying.
“Someone wants to take our daughter away.”
That night, Alejandro rushed home.
But he was too late.
His wife was dead.
And his two-year-old daughter, Valeria, was missing.
The police closed the case quickly.
Too quickly.
Someone powerful had erased every trace.
Alejandro searched everywhere.
Countries.
Cities.
Orphanages.
Private records.
But Valeria had disappeared.
Until tonight.
A doctor finally walked out.
Alejandro immediately stood.
“How is she?”
The doctor removed his mask.
“She is alive.”
Alejandro closed his eyes.
A tear fell down his face.
“And the baby?”
The doctor smiled.
“The baby is alive too.”
For the first time in sixteen years…
Alejandro felt like the universe had finally returned something it stole from him.
When Valeria woke up, everything hurt.
Her body felt broken.
Her head was heavy.
For a moment, she didn’t remember where she was.
Then memories came rushing back.
The cliff.
Mauricio.
Ximena.
The betrayal.
She immediately grabbed her stomach.
“My baby…”
A nurse smiled.
“He’s okay.”
Valeria started crying.
A mixture of relief and pain.
“My husband…”
The nurse hesitated.
Valeria noticed.
“What?”
The nurse looked uncomfortable.
“You need to speak with the man who rescued you.”
“Who?”
Before the nurse could answer…
The door opened.
The silver-haired man entered.
Valeria stared at him.
The feeling was strange.
Like seeing someone she knew…
But had never met.
Alejandro slowly approached.
“I don’t expect you to believe me.”
His voice trembled.
“But I have waited half my life to say this.”
He placed an old photograph on the table.
Valeria looked down.
Her blood ran cold.
It was her mother.
Young.
Happy.
Standing beside this same man.
The same man in front of her.
“My mother…”
Alejandro nodded.
“Yes.”
His voice broke.
“She loved you more than anything in this world.”
Valeria looked at him.
“Who are you?”
The man swallowed.
Then whispered:
“I’m the father you were told never existed.”
Valeria felt the room spinning.
“No…”
She shook her head.
“My mother told me my father abandoned us.”
Alejandro’s eyes filled with pain.
“She was forced to say that.”
“By who?”
Silence.
A terrifying silence.
Then Alejandro answered:
“By the same people who tried to kill you tonight.”
Valeria froze.
“What?”
Alejandro sat beside her.
“Your husband didn’t choose you because he loved you.”
“He chose you because of who you were.”
She stared at him.
“I don’t understand.”
Alejandro took a deep breath.
“Valeria… before your mother died, she left something for you.”
“What?”
“A secret.”
He opened a small envelope.
Inside was a document.
A birth record.
A company ownership certificate.
And a handwritten letter.
Valeria recognized the handwriting immediately.
Her mother’s handwriting.
The letter began:
“My dear Valeria… if you are reading this, it means they failed to keep you hidden.”
Her hands began shaking.
She continued reading.
“Your father did not abandon us. He was betrayed. And you are the rightful heir to everything they stole from him.”
At that exact moment…
Across the city…
Mauricio received a phone call.
He answered confidently.
“Yes?”
A stranger’s voice spoke.
“Mr. Cárdenas…”
“What?”
“We have a problem.”
Mauricio frowned.
“What problem?”
The voice became nervous.
“The body was never found.”
Mauricio’s face changed.
“That’s impossible.”
“There’s more.”
“What?”
The stranger paused.
Then said:
“Someone rescued her.”
Mauricio stood up.
“What?”
“And there is another problem.”
Mauricio tightened his grip on the phone.
“Tell me.”
The voice whispered:
“The man who saved her…”
“…is Alejandro Robles.”
The glass slipped from Mauricio’s hand.
It shattered on the floor.
Because Mauricio knew exactly who Alejandro Robles was.
The most powerful man he had ever tried to steal from.
The man whose daughter he had just tried to murder.
Mauricio’s face turned pale.
“No…”
Ximena looked at him.
“What happened?”
He slowly turned toward her.
And for the first time that night…
He was afraid.
“Valeria is alive.”
Ximena laughed.
“That’s impossible.”
Mauricio stared at the broken glass.
“No…”
His voice became a whisper.
“What’s impossible…”
“…is that she is no longer alone.”
