Chapter 2: The Blood Was Only the Beginning

The first police cruiser rolled through the iron gates exactly eight minutes after Valerie's call.

Its flashing blue and red lights painted the Hawthorne mansion in colors no one in the neighborhood had ever seen.

Not celebration.

Not prestige.

Exposure.

Inside the dining room, no one moved.

Not because they respected the law.

Because every person around that table was silently calculating the same question.

How much of this could still be covered up?

Richard Hawthorne had spent forty years buying silence.

Judges.

Politicians.

Inspectors.

Journalists.

He had survived corruption investigations, hostile takeovers, and lawsuits worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Money always solved problems.

Always.

Tonight would be no different.

Or so he believed.

The front doors opened.

Two police officers entered first.

Behind them came two paramedics carrying trauma bags.

The younger officer froze for half a second when he saw Valerie.

Blood had soaked one shoulder of her ivory blouse.

Pieces of porcelain still clung to her hair.

The white tablecloth looked like a crime scene.

"Ma'am..."

The officer walked toward her.

"Are you Valerie Bennett?"

"Yes."

"Who assaulted you?"

Without hesitation, Valerie lifted one trembling hand.

"My husband."

Every head in the room slowly turned toward Ethan.

For the first time all evening...

No one defended him.

The paramedics guided Valerie into a chair.

One carefully separated strands of blood-soaked hair.

His expression changed immediately.

"We've got a deep scalp laceration."

He looked at his partner.

"Possible concussion."

As sterile gauze pressed against her wound, Valerie never once took her eyes off Ethan.

He stood perfectly still.

Almost arrogant.

Almost.

Then Richard stepped forward.

"Gentlemen," he said smoothly.

"I'm Richard Hawthorne."

He extended his hand toward the senior officer.

"My attorneys can explain everything."

The officer ignored the handshake.

"I'm not here to speak with attorneys."

"I'm here to investigate an assault."

For the first time...

Richard's smile cracked.

Eleanor suddenly burst into dramatic tears.

"Oh, officers..."

"It was simply an accident."

"They were arguing."

"My son lost his balance."

"The plate slipped."

Several relatives immediately nodded.

"Exactly."

"It happened so fast."

"No one meant for anyone to get hurt."

Valerie listened quietly.

Then she reached into her purse.

"I expected that."

Everyone looked toward her.

She placed her phone on the dining table.

"I started recording almost twenty minutes before the assault."

Silence.

Real silence.

The kind that suffocates.

Ethan's face turned white.

"You..."

"You recorded us?"

Valerie looked directly at him.

"I realized the dinner wasn't about family."

"It was about stealing my home."

"So I protected myself."

The younger officer picked up the phone.

"May I?"

She nodded.

He pressed play.

The dining room filled with familiar voices.

Eleanor discussing which bedroom she wanted.

Richard deciding who would move Valerie's furniture.

Ethan saying...

"It's already settled. She'll do what she's told."

Then Valerie's voice.

"No."

The argument.

The insults.

The scraping chair.

And finally—

The unmistakable crash of porcelain.

Ethan shouting.

Valerie crying out in pain.

One terrified scream from somewhere across the table.

The recording ended.

No one spoke.

Because recordings don't forget.

And recordings don't lie.

Richard recovered first.

"There must be some misunderstanding."

The senior officer looked directly at him.

"There isn't."

He turned toward Ethan.

"Sir."

"I'm placing you under arrest on suspicion of felony domestic assault."

The words echoed through the mansion.

Ethan laughed.

Actually laughed.

"You have any idea who I am?"

"No."

The officer calmly removed a pair of handcuffs.

"And it doesn't matter."

The metallic click echoed through the room.

One cuff.

Then the other.

For thirty-six years...

Ethan Hawthorne had never worn anything his father hadn't purchased.

Designer watches.

Tailored suits.

Luxury cars.

Private jet bracelets.

Tonight...

The only thing wrapped around his wrists was cold steel.

"You can't do this!"

Richard shouted.

"I'll have your badge!"

The officer remained expressionless.

"You can discuss that with Internal Affairs."

"But your son is still coming with us."

As Ethan was escorted toward the front door, he twisted around to glare at Valerie.

"You ruined everything!"

She answered quietly.

"No."

"You ruined your life."

"You just expected me to stay silent."

Outside, neighbors had already gathered behind the security gates.

Smartphones were raised.

Someone whispered.

"Isn't that Ethan Hawthorne?"

Another person gasped.

"They're arresting him."

Flash.

Flash.

Flash.

Pictures spread across social media before the patrol car even left the driveway.

Within fifteen minutes...

The first headline appeared.

Billionaire Developer's Son Arrested After Violent Domestic Assault During Family Dinner.

It was only a local news account.

Barely five thousand followers.

But one reporter recognized the family name.

She forwarded the story to a national newsroom.

Then another.

Then another.

The dominoes had begun to fall.

Meanwhile...

Inside the ambulance...

A paramedic finished wrapping the bandage around Valerie's head.

"You'll probably need stitches."

She nodded.

Her phone vibrated.

Unknown Number.

She answered.

"Miss Bennett?"

"Yes."

"My name is Daniel Brooks."

"I'm the managing partner of Brooks & Hale Legal Group."

Valerie frowned.

"I'm sorry... I don't think we've met."

"We haven't."

"But we've just seen the police report."

"And we'd like to represent you."

She blinked.

"I can't afford your firm."

There was a brief pause.

Then Daniel replied.

"You misunderstand."

"We're not asking for payment."

"We're offering our services."

"Completely free."

Valerie stared through the ambulance window.

"Why?"

His answer sent a chill down her spine.

"Because this isn't the first complaint involving the Hawthorne family."

"We've been waiting years..."

"For someone brave enough to survive long enough to speak."

Valerie's heartbeat slowed.

"What do you mean?"

Another pause.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

"Mrs. Bennett..."

"We believe you're victim number eleven."

The world seemed to stop.

Eleven?

Ten women before her?

How had no one ever heard about them?

Daniel's voice became even quieter.

"And if we're right..."

"Your husband isn't the most dangerous person in that family."

"He never was."

The ambulance doors closed.

Its siren came alive.

As it disappeared into the Chicago night, Valerie realized she had escaped one monster...

Only to discover she had just declared war on an entire dynasty built on secrets.
