Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Richard Whitmore

Adrian dropped to his knees in front of me. The arrogant king of Stonebridge Capital was gone; in his place was a desperate, sweating rat backed into a corner.

He reached out with trembling hands, trying to untie the silk necktie binding my wrists behind my back.

“Clara... baby, please,” he stammered, his voice cracking with pathetic desperation. “We can fix this. It was a mistake! I was stressed out... the pressure from the board, the merger—I lost my temper! You know I love you, Clara! I built all of this for us!”

“You built it on my father’s corpse,” I said, pulling my hands away from his grasp even while bound. “You used my trust fund to leverage your first buyout. You forged my signature on three different proxy votes. And when you thought you had extracted every last dollar from the Whitmore name, you brought her into my home to strip me of my remaining dignities.”

“I’ll destroy the amendment!” Adrian sobbed, grabbing the legal papers off the coffee table and tearing them into shredded confetti. “Look! It’s gone! There’s no legal claim! I don’t want your shares! Just call off the automated release! Tell them it was a performance! A game! A misunderstanding!”

“It’s not an automated release of information, Adrian,” I said, straining my muscles as I rolled myself up into a sitting position against the base of the sofa.

I looked him dead in the eye.

“Do you know why my father gave you Stonebridge Capital’s initial start-up seed funding three years ago?”

Adrian blinked, his eyes darting frantically toward the window where red and blue lights were now flashing against the long birch trees of our driveway. “Because... because he believed in my vision!”

“No,” I smiled, a small, cold curve of my lips. “My father never trusted you for a single second. He gave you thirty million dollars because he wanted you to build an empire high enough that when you fell, the impact would destroy you completely. Every contract you signed with Whitmore Holdings contained an embedded silent equity clause. A 'poison pill' designed to trigger in the event of documented domestic cruelty or corporate fraud.”

Vanessa was already backing toward the rear exit of the mansion, holding her designer heels in her hands, trying to sneak down the service hallway.

“Where are you going, Vanessa?” I called out effortlessly.

She froze like a deer in headlights.

“You think you’re running away with the offshore accounts Adrian opened in your name in the Cayman Islands?” I asked her. “Did you really think a man who beat his own wife would leave your assets untouchable?”

Vanessa turned slowly, her face contorted in sudden horror. “What are you talking about?”

“Check account number 8804, Vanessa,” I advised gently. “The one Adrian told you had five million dollars waiting for your escape.”

Vanessa’s hands shook so badly she nearly dropped her phone again. She typed furiously into her banking app. A second later, a horrific, strangled scream tore from her throat.

“IT’S ZERO!” she shrieked, swinging her gaze back to Adrian with wild, murderous eyes. “YOU LIED TO ME! YOU TRANSFERRED IT ALL OUT THIS MORNING!”
