CHAPTER 1 – THE BURN THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

“Either you hand over your bank card… or you get out of my house.”

The words came slowly, coldly, like a death sentence.

Camila Ríos stared at her husband from across the breakfast table.

For a moment, she thought she had heard him wrong.

Outside the apartment window, the noisy streets of Mexico City were already alive. Vendors shouted. Cars honked. Somewhere nearby, a radio played an old love song.

But inside Apartment 4B, the air had suddenly become heavy.

“Did you hear me?” Julián asked.

He stirred his coffee with a spoon and didn't even bother looking at her.

Camila slowly put down her fork.

“You mean my card?”

“Yes. Brenda needs it.”

“No.”

Silence.

A dangerous silence.

Julián finally raised his eyes.

His face changed.

Not into anger.

Into something worse.

The expression of a man who couldn't believe someone had dared tell him no.

“What do you mean, no?”

“I mean exactly that. No.”

He laughed once.

A short, mocking laugh.

“Brenda has to pay her rent.”

“She said the same thing last month.”

“She'll pay you back.”

“She said that the last four times too.”

His jaw tightened.

“You're being selfish.”

Camila took a deep breath.

“No, Julián. I'm tired.”

The spoon clinked against the cup.

“Tired of what?”

“Tired of paying for your sister's vacations. Her phones. Her shopping. Her debts. I'm tired of working twelve hours a day while she spends money she doesn't have.”

Julián slowly stood.

“You think you're better than us because you make more money?”

“No.”

“Then stop acting like it.”

Camila looked directly at him.

“Why doesn't Brenda ask you for money?”

The question hit him like a slap.

He hated that question.

Because he didn't have the answer.

Or rather… he did.

He simply didn't want to say it.

Because he was broke.

Again.

For six years, Camila had been carrying the weight of their marriage.

The apartment?

Hers.

The furniture?

Hers.

The car parked downstairs?

Paid mostly by her.

Even the expensive watch Julián loved showing off to his friends had been bought with her money.

Yet somehow, he had convinced himself that everything belonged to him.

And the worst part?

Camila had allowed it.

Because she loved him.

Because she believed marriage meant sacrifice.

Because every time he exploded, he apologized afterward.

Until eventually…

the apologies stopped.

“You'll give Brenda the card,” he said.

“No.”

“I wasn't asking.”

“Well, you should.”

His eyes darkened.

And then…

everything happened in less than three seconds.

He grabbed the coffee cup.

His arm moved.

The boiling liquid flew through the air.

SPLASH!

A scream ripped through the apartment.

The coffee hit Camila's face and neck.

Her skin instantly turned red.

The pain was unbearable.

She stumbled backward and collapsed against the counter.

“Oh God!”

She ran toward the sink, turned on the faucet, and let cold water pour over her face.

Her hands were shaking violently.

She could barely breathe.

Behind her…

Julián didn't move.

Not one step.

Not one word.

No apology.

No panic.

Nothing.

Finally, he spoke.

“That's what happens when you disrespect me.”

Camila slowly turned.

She couldn't believe what she had just heard.

Tears streamed down her face.

Not because of the pain.

Because at that exact moment…

something inside her broke.

Six years.

Six years of excuses.

Six years of emotional manipulation.

Six years of paying bills while being treated like an outsider in her own home.

And now…

he had burned her.

The man she married looked at her as if she deserved it.

Then his phone rang.

Brenda.

He answered immediately.

“Hey, sis.”

Camila stared at him in disbelief.

His voice suddenly became soft.

Kind.

Almost loving.

“Yes, I'm coming… Don't worry. Everything's under control.”

Everything's under control.

She would never forget those words.

He grabbed his keys.

“I'm going to pick Brenda up.”

“You need help,” Camila whispered.

He shrugged.

“What you need is to stop being dramatic.”

Then he pointed at her.

“And when I get back, you'll apologize.”

The front door slammed.

Silence.

A terrible, empty silence.

Camila stood alone in the kitchen.

Water dripped from her chin.

Her cheek throbbed.

Her hands trembled.

Then…

she looked at her reflection in the microwave door.

And didn't recognize herself.

A red burn stretched from her cheek to her neck.

But it wasn't the injury that frightened her.

It was her eyes.

They looked… awake.

As if she had finally opened them after years of sleeping.

Then her phone vibrated.

A message.

Unknown number.

She opened it.

Her blood froze.

The text read:

"You need to leave him now. He and Brenda are hiding something from you."

Attached was a photo.

Camila stared at the image.

Then she almost dropped the phone.

It was a picture of Julián.

And Brenda.

Standing inside a bank.

Holding papers.

Smiling.

The date on the photo was only three days earlier.

But what made her heart stop…

was the document on the table.

Her apartment deed.

The apartment she had bought before marriage.

The apartment that legally belonged only to her.

Why did they have her deed?

Who took that picture?

And what exactly were they planning?

Another message arrived.

"Check the blue folder in your office drawer before he comes back."

Camila's breathing became shallow.

She ran into her home office.

Opened the drawer.

And found the blue folder.

Inside…

were photocopies of her ID.

Bank statements.

Her signature…

badly forged.

And a document requesting authorization to transfer property ownership.

Her knees nearly gave out.

They weren't trying to borrow her bank card.

They were trying to steal everything.

At that moment, her phone rang again.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A woman's voice whispered:

“Camila… if you stay there tonight, you're going to lose more than your apartment.”

“Who is this?”

A long silence.

Then:

“I'm Brenda's former friend.”

“Why are you helping me?”

The woman inhaled shakily.

“Because you're not the first woman they've done this to.”

The line went dead.

Camila stood frozen.

Her entire body trembled.

Not from the burn anymore.

From fear.

And for the first time…

she realized something horrifying.

Maybe marrying Julián had never been an accident.

Maybe…

she had been chosen.

And somewhere in Mexico City, completely unaware, Julián was driving home with his sister…

believing his wife would still be there.

Believing she would cry.

Beg.

Forgive.

He had no idea that before midnight…

May you like

Camila would discover a secret capable of sending both of them to prison.
