CHAPTER 4: THE WOMAN WHO WALKED OUT OF THE FIRE

The roar of departing motorcycles faded into the distance.

One by one, Hawk's brothers abandoned him.

The man who had ruled the club for three decades now stood completely alone.

His leather vest suddenly felt heavier than chains.

Ethan couldn't take his eyes off him.

"You stole my father..."

"You stole my entire life."

Hawk opened his mouth to answer.

But no words came out.

For the first time in thirty-two years...

There was no lie left to hide behind.

Then—

The diner door creaked open.

Everyone turned.

An elderly woman stepped inside, dressed in a simple gray coat. Her silver hair was tied neatly beneath an old scarf, and despite her age, her eyes were sharp enough to silence the room.

The old man who had exposed Hawk froze.

"No..."

His voice barely escaped his lips.

"It can't be..."

The woman smiled sadly.

"Hello, Samuel."

The cane slipped from Samuel's hands and crashed onto the floor.

"You... you're dead."

"So is your brother," the woman replied softly.

"But somehow... people keep burying the wrong ones."

Even Hawk looked stunned.

He stared at the woman as if he had seen a ghost.

"Grace?"

She nodded.

"Yes."

"The woman you testified died in the warehouse fire."

The waitress covered her mouth.

Every biker still inside exchanged nervous glances.

Hawk whispered,

"I attended your funeral."

Grace stepped closer.

"You attended an empty coffin."

The room fell silent once again.

Grace reached into her purse and carefully removed a small velvet pouch.

Inside was a gold wedding ring, blackened by smoke but still intact.

She handed it to Ethan.

"Your father wore this every single day."

Ethan's fingers trembled as he held the ring.

Inside the band was a tiny engraving.

Forever, Grace.

Tears streamed down Grace's face.

"He took it off only once."

"The night he ran back into that burning warehouse..."

"...to save you."

Ethan collapsed into a chair.

Everything he believed about his father had been a lie.

His father hadn't abandoned him.

He had died protecting him.

Grace slowly turned toward Hawk.

"I kept quiet because I was terrified."

"You threatened me."

"You told me that if I ever spoke the truth..."

"...my son would disappear next."

Hawk shut his eyes.

He couldn't deny it anymore.

"I was a coward," he whispered.

"No," Grace replied coldly.

"A coward runs from danger."

"You created it."

Before anyone could speak again, flashing red and blue lights filled the diner windows.

Police cars surrounded the building.

An officer stepped inside holding a sealed evidence box.

"We're looking for Howard 'Hawk' Carter."

Hawk looked up in disbelief.

The officer placed the box on the counter.

"We reopened the warehouse fire investigation."

"Someone anonymously mailed us evidence."

Samuel frowned.

"I didn't send anything."

Grace slowly shook her head.

"Neither did I."

The officer opened the box.

Inside were dozens of photographs...

Bank records...

Witness statements...

And a flash drive labeled:

OPEN AFTER MY DEATH.

The officer looked directly at Hawk.

"It was mailed three days ago."

"But the sender died..."

"...twenty-six years ago."

Hawk's face lost every trace of color.

Because only one person could have prepared that package.

The man everyone believed had died in the fire.

May you like

His brother.
