Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the SystemForty-eight hours later, tucked inside a high-security medical fortress hidden deep within the Colorado pines, I sat propped up against silk pillows. My right arm was encased in a rigid fiberglass cast, and rhythmic monitors tracked every beat of my heart—and the steady, strong heartbeat of my child.

The medical team Dmitri provided was world-class. They had treated my fractured ribs, managed my hypothermia, and confirmed what mattered most: my baby was a fighter, entirely unharmed by the terrifying fall.

Dmitri stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, watching the snow fall outside. He held a crystal glass of dark bourbon, swirling the amber liquid slowly.

"They're holding the memorial service tomorrow afternoon," Dmitri said, not turning around. "Michael insisted on an open-casket ceremony. Or rather, a closed-casket service with a very heavy, sealed mahogany box. He told the police that your body was mangled beyond recognition by the ravine rocks."

A bitter laugh escaped my lips. "Of course he did. He needs closure so he can liquidate my family’s trust fund and collect the insurance payout by Monday morning."

"He won't make it to Monday," Dmitri replied calmly. He turned around, walking toward the bed with deliberate, heavy steps. He placed a thick manila folder on my bedside table. "Here is everything. Bank accounts in the Cayman Islands, offshore shell companies registered under Ashley’s name, and the forged medical documents Michael used to bypass the underwriting waiting period on the life insurance policy."

I opened the folder, my eyes scanning the pages. Every piece of paper confirmed the nightmare I had lived through. For three years, I thought Michael was a brilliant, rising pharmaceutical executive who adored me. In reality, he was drowning in gambling debts accumulated through high-stakes underground poker clubs in Denver. When he discovered I was the sole heir to my grandfather’s international logistics empire—a secret I kept hidden because I wanted a man who loved me, not my wealth—he saw a way out.

Marry me. Isolate me. Insure me for fifty million. Push me off a cliff.

"He thinks he won," I whispered, closing the folder. "He thinks he's untouchable."

Dmitri leaned against the edge of the mattress, towering over me. The proximity made my breath hitch. There was an intense, magnetic danger radiating from him—a man accustomed to dealing in blood, bullets, and absolute power.

"Nobody gets away with touching what belongs to my bloodline," Dmitri said quietly.

I blinked, confused. "Your bloodline?"

Dmitri reached out, his calloused, tattooed fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from my forehead. "Your mother was a Sokolov, Elena. My cousin. When she married your father and vanished into America, our branch lost track of her. But I never forgot the family name. When my intelligence network flagged a massive, suspicious life insurance policy taken out on an American woman bearing our ancestral middle name in Colorado... I started digging."

My heart hammered against my ribs. "You're... family?"

"Distant by blood, lethal by choice," Dmitri corrected, his gray eyes burning into mine. "Michael Carter thought he was murdering a helpless, lonely wife. Tomorrow, we are going to teach him what happens when you wake a sleeping wolf."
