CHAPTER 4 — The Last Letter From a Dead Woman

The entire university courtyard was holding its breath.

Nobody cared about the graduation ceremony anymore.

Nobody was looking at the diplomas.

Nobody was taking pictures.

All eyes were on Valeria Zamora.

The girl whose father had slapped her in front of everyone.

The girl whose mother had called her useless.

The girl who had just exposed a four-year lie.

But now…

There was something else.

A letter.

A letter written by the one person who had always believed in her.

Her grandmother Teresa.

Valeria stared at the old envelope in her hands.

The paper was yellow from time.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

She remembered those hands.

The same hands that used to prepare breakfast for her before school.

The same hands that held her when she cried.

The same hands that told her:

“Never let anyone convince you that you are small.”

Her fingers trembled as she opened it.

Then she began reading.

“My beloved Valeria,

If you are reading this letter, it means something happened that forced you to search for the truth.”

The crowd became silent.

Even the birds seemed to disappear.

Valeria continued.

“I know my son Rogelio. I raised him. I love him. But love does not mean blindness.”

Rogelio’s face changed.

For the first time, everyone saw fear in his eyes.

“Before I died, I discovered that Rogelio planned to control the money I left for your education.”

A wave of shock passed through the crowd.

Silvia immediately shouted:

—This is ridiculous! She was old and confused!

But nobody listened.

Valeria kept reading.

“He believes money gives him power over people. He believes whoever pays has the right to decide another person’s future.”

Her voice became emotional.

Because those words described exactly what she had lived through.

Four years earlier…

After Teresa’s funeral, Rogelio had visited the lawyer alone.

He thought nobody knew.

He thought nobody would question him.

The inheritance papers were simple.

The money was for Valeria’s education.

Not for him.

Not for his business.

Not for Iván.

But Rogelio didn’t see it that way.

He saw an opportunity.

His son needed a truck.

His son wanted to start a business.

His son needed another chance.

And in his mind…

Valeria could wait.

Because she was “responsible.”

Because she was “strong.”

Because she would “understand.”

But what he never understood was this:

The strongest person in the family was also the one he underestimated the most.

Valeria turned the page.

The next paragraph made everyone uncomfortable.

“I asked my lawyer to monitor the account because I suspected something.”

The lawyer standing beside the stage nodded.

She stepped toward the microphone.

—Your grandmother contacted me two weeks before her death.

The audience looked at her.

—She was worried because she had overheard a conversation between Rogelio and Silvia.

Rogelio immediately shouted:

—That’s impossible!

The lawyer looked directly at him.

—She recorded it.

The entire courtyard froze.

—Your mother knew she was being betrayed by her own son.

She opened a small folder.

—She left instructions that this recording should only be released if Valeria’s education was threatened.

Valeria looked shocked.

—My grandmother knew?

The lawyer nodded sadly.

—She knew exactly what kind of person your father could become.

The recording began.

At first, there was only silence.

Then Teresa’s voice appeared.

Weak.

But clear.

—Rogelio, why did you transfer the money?

Everyone looked at Valeria’s father.

His face lost all color.

Then his own voice played.

—Because I’m her father.

Teresa responded:

—Being her father does not make you the owner of her life.

The crowd remained silent.

Then Rogelio said something that made everyone gasp.

—Valeria is young. She doesn’t understand money.

Teresa answered:

—No.

A pause.

—She understands sacrifice better than anyone in this house.

Then came the sentence that destroyed him:

—The problem is that you don’t want a daughter who succeeds.

Silence.

Then Rogelio’s angry voice:

—Iván needs help. He is a man. He has responsibilities.

Teresa replied:

—A man who wastes opportunities while a woman builds herself does not deserve more support.

The recording stopped.

Nobody looked at Rogelio the same way anymore.

The man who had spent years pretending to be a victim…

Was now exposed.

But Valeria wasn’t done.

She turned to her father.

—You told everyone I was a failure because you needed people to believe your lie.

Her voice shook.

—You needed them to think I quit because if they knew the truth…

She raised the bank documents.

—They would know you stole from me.

Rogelio’s anger returned.

—You ungrateful child!

The crowd reacted.

Even after everything…

He still blamed her.

Valeria stared at him.

And calmly answered:

—No, Dad.

A pause.

—The ungrateful person is the one who takes a dead woman’s final gift from her granddaughter.

Then something unexpected happened.

Iván suddenly walked forward.

Everyone turned.

Including Valeria.

His eyes were red.

—Stop.

Rogelio looked at him.

—What did you say?

Iván swallowed.

For years, he had been silent.

For years, he had accepted the benefits.

The truck.

The business.

The expensive lifestyle.

While his sister struggled.

But now he couldn’t hide anymore.

—She’s telling the truth.

The courtyard exploded.

Silvia screamed:

—Iván! What are you doing?

He looked at his mother.

—Telling the truth for once.

Rogelio stepped toward him.

—After everything I did for you?

Iván laughed bitterly.

—That’s the problem, Dad.

He pointed at Valeria.

—Everything you did for me came from what belonged to her.

Nobody moved.

Then Iván said the words nobody expected:

—I knew about the money.

Valeria’s eyes widened.

Her brother continued:

—I knew Grandma left money for her.

A painful silence followed.

—And I knew you were lying.

The crowd stared.

Because the biggest betrayal was no longer just the parents.

It was the brother.

The person who watched her suffer…

While enjoying the life stolen from her.

Valeria looked at Iván.

Her expression was not anger.

It was disappointment.

The deepest kind.

—Why?

Her voice was almost a whisper.

—Why did you let them do this?

Iván looked down.

And after four years of silence…

He finally answered.

—Because I was afraid.

Valeria frowned.

—Afraid of what?

Iván looked at their parents.

Then back at his sister.

—Afraid that if I told the truth…

I would lose the only family that treated me like I mattered.

Those words hit everyone.

Because they revealed something even darker.

The family wasn’t just built on lies.

It was built on choosing one child…

And destroying another.

But before anyone could react…

The lawyer opened one more folder.

She looked at Valeria.

—There is one final document your grandmother left.

Valeria frowned.

—Another one?

The lawyer nodded.

—Yes.

She handed it over.

—And this one changes everything.

Valeria opened it.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then suddenly…

Her face turned pale.

Because the document revealed a secret about her own identity.

A secret her parents had hidden since she was a child.

A secret that explained why they had always treated her differently.

And when Valeria read the final line…

She dropped the paper.

Because her grandmother’s last words were:

May you like

“Valeria, there is something your parents never told you about your birth…”

TO BE CONTINUED…
