CHAPTER 5 — The Marriage That Was Never About Love

The hospital room felt colder than before.
Lucía stared at the document lying on her blanket.
Her eyes moved slowly across the page.
Every line.
Every signature.
Every date.
And then she saw it.
The thing that destroyed the last piece of doubt inside her.
Rodrigo Rivas had signed it three months before their wedding.
Before the promises.
Before the vows.
Before he held her hand and told her:
"I will love you forever."
He had already planned how to take everything from her.
Lucía looked up.
Her face was calm.
Too calm.
Rodrigo noticed.
And for the first time, he looked afraid.
“Lucía…”
She raised the document.
“Explain this.”
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Camila crossed her arms.
“You might as well tell her the truth.”
Rodrigo looked at her angrily.
“Shut up.”
Lucía heard that.
And she smiled bitterly.
Because she finally understood.
Rodrigo wasn’t angry because Camila betrayed him.
He was angry because Camila revealed him.
“Interesting,” Lucía said quietly.
“What?”
“For years, you protected her.”
She looked at Rodrigo.
“But you never protected me.”
Silence.
The document was a private agreement.
A hidden contract.
Created by a lawyer who specialized in corporate takeovers.
The purpose was simple:
If Rodrigo married Lucía and gained her trust, he would eventually obtain access to her assets.
Her shares.
Her investments.
Her company decisions.
Everything.
The plan was supposed to take five years.
But Rodrigo became impatient.
After only three years, he started pushing.
He convinced Lucía to put certain properties under joint management.
He pressured her to give him more authority inside Grupo Altavista.
He slowly removed her from decisions.
And she had allowed it…
Because she believed she was building a marriage.
Not realizing she was giving someone the tools to destroy her.
“You were never my wife.”
Lucía’s voice was almost a whisper.
Rodrigo looked at her.
“No.”
“You were my biggest investment.”
His face changed.
“Lucía, that’s not true.”
“Isn’t it?”
She pointed at the document.
“Your signature says otherwise.”
Rodrigo stepped closer.
“Listen to me. I was influenced.”
Lucía laughed.
A quiet, painful laugh.
“Influenced?”
She looked at Camila.
“By her?”
Then back at Rodrigo.
“Did she force you to lie to me?”
“No.”
“Did she force you to ignore me in the hospital?”
“No.”
“Did she force you to let your mother insult me for three years?”
Rodrigo lowered his head.
“No.”
“Then stop blaming everyone else.”
Her voice became stronger.
“You made your choices.”
Camila suddenly smiled.
“You know what the funniest part is?”
Lucía looked at her.
Camila stepped closer.
“Rodrigo actually believed he was smarter than you.”
Rodrigo frowned.
“Camila, stop.”
“No.”
She laughed.
“He always said you were too emotional.”
Lucía froze.
Camila continued.
“He said you were brilliant with numbers but weak with people.”
Those words hurt.
Because Rodrigo had said them before.
Many times.
“You’re too trusting, Lucía.”
“You always see the best in everyone.”
“You don’t understand how the world works.”
She thought those were criticisms.
Now she realized…
They were weaknesses he was counting on.
But then Lucía noticed something.
A small detail.
A mistake.
A mistake that only someone who built companies would notice.
She looked at the document again.
Then she smiled.
Rodrigo frowned.
“Why are you smiling?”
Lucía lifted the paper.
“Because you made one mistake.”
Camila’s expression changed.
“What mistake?”
Lucía pointed to the bottom.
“This contract was created three months before our wedding.”
“Yes.”
“And it claims Rodrigo would gain control over my assets after marriage.”
“Yes.”
Lucía looked at Rodrigo.
“But you forgot something.”
“What?”
“My assets were never controlled by me after marriage.”
Silence.
Rodrigo frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
Lucía smiled.
“My shares were transferred into Aurora Capital before I met you.”
Camila’s confidence disappeared slightly.
“So?”
“So the person who wrote this contract didn’t understand the trust structure.”
Lucía looked at both of them.
“This document is worthless.”
Nobody spoke.
Then Lucía added:
“And the people who created it just admitted their intention to commit fraud.”
The room froze.
Camila’s face changed.
“You wouldn’t.”
Lucía looked at her.
“Wouldn’t what?”
“Destroy us.”
Lucía shook her head.
“No.”
A pause.
“I’m not destroying you.”
She picked up her phone.
“I’m letting the truth do that.”
Camila suddenly became nervous.
“Who are you calling?”
Lucía smiled.
“The authorities.”
Rodrigo stepped forward.
“Wait.”
For the first time…
He sounded desperate.
“Lucía, please.”
She looked at him.
The man she once loved.
The man she would have forgiven yesterday.
But not today.
“Do you know what hurts the most?”
Rodrigo said nothing.
“It’s not the money.”
“It’s not the company.”
“It’s not even the betrayal.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“It’s knowing that while I was planning our future…”
“You were planning my downfall.”
Two hours later…
The police arrived at Grupo Altavista.
Not to arrest Rodrigo immediately.
But to collect evidence.
The investigation became official.
And then…
A shocking discovery appeared.
A hidden account.
A secret offshore company.
And a list of names.
Rodrigo.
Camila.
Doña Graciela.
But there was one more name.
A name Lucía never expected.
A name that made her heart stop.
Her father.
That night, Lucía sat alone in her hospital room.
She stared at the ceiling.
Her entire life felt like a puzzle.
Pieces she thought belonged together suddenly looked completely different.
Her husband.
Her best friend.
Her company.
Her family.
Everyone she trusted…
Had secrets.
Then her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A man's voice spoke.
“Lucía.”
She froze.
Because she recognized that voice.
It belonged to the man who had been dead for five years.
Her father.
“Impossible…”
The voice continued:
“Your father didn’t die in an accident.”
Lucía stopped breathing.
“What?”
“There was a reason I disappeared.”
Her hand trembled.
“Who are you?”
The man whispered:
“The same person who protected you from the people who are trying to steal everything from you.”
A pause.
“And Lucía…”
Her heart raced.
“You need to find out the truth before Rodrigo and Camila do.”
The call ended.
Lucía stared at the phone.
Because suddenly…
Her broken leg was no longer the biggest problem.
The biggest problem was discovering that the entire life she knew…
May you like
Might have been built on a lie.
