Chapter 3 - THE SECRET BENEATH THE FLOOR

That evening, accompanied by Daniel Mercer and a private security team, I returned to 424 Elmwood Lane.
The house was dark and silent. Liam and Harper had complied with the eviction notice, driven away by the threat of public arrest, but their presence still lingered like a foul odor. The coffee table still held the yellow legal pad. The catalog was still open.
I walked straight up the wide wooden staircase, my heels clicking firmly against the steps.
I entered the master bedroom. The room was bathed in the soft glow of the late afternoon sun. Arthur’s brass reading lamp shone warm on the nightstand. The Vermont quilt lay undisturbed at the foot of the bed.
I stood at the edge of the room and looked around. Where would Arthur hide something so important that Harper would risk her marriage and her reputation to find it?
I recalled his letter: She knows what is hidden beneath the floorboards.
I walked over to the grand walk-in closet at the far side of the room. I pushed aside my coats, my dresses, and Arthur’s remaining wool suits that I had never had the heart to throw away.
At the back of the closet sat an antique cedar chest that Arthur had restored decades ago.
I pulled the heavy chest away from the wall. Beneath it, the oak floorboards looked completely seamless to the naked eye. But as I ran my fingers along the seam near the baseboard, I felt a tiny, raised bronze latch concealed behind a brass screw.
I pressed the screw.
With a soft click, a rectangular section of three floorboards popped up slightly.
I lifted the wooden panel. Inside the shallow, reinforced metal compartment sat a heavy leather ledger, a stack of original financial deeds, and a encrypted USB drive labeled: WHITMORE ENTERPRISES - HARPER VANE LEVERAGE.
My breath hitched in my throat.
Harper’s maiden name was Vane. Her father had been one of Arthur’s junior business partners thirty years ago before he went bankrupt and disappeared from the corporate scene.
I sat down on the floor of my closet, opened the ledger, and began to read.
Page after page detailing corporate transfers, hidden bank accounts, and private investigator reports dated just six months before Arthur died.
Harper hadn't met Liam by accident at a corporate gala seven years ago. Her entire relationship with my son had been orchestrated. Her father had lost millions in a failed investment scheme with Whitmore Enterprises, blaming Arthur for his downfall. Harper had spent years working her way into my son's life, calculatedly marrying him, waiting for Arthur to die, and slowly positioning herself to take control of the entire Whitmore estate.
And the master bedroom?
Arthur’s private ledger revealed that hidden inside the wall cavity behind our bed was a original bearer bond certificate portfolio worth over $4 million—assets that Harper’s family claimed Arthur had stolen from them decades ago.
