Chapter 8 - The ResurrectionThe heavy study doors swung wide open.

Standing in the doorway, leaning slightly against a massive mahogany frame for support, was Everett Kane.

He was dressed in a dark charcoal suit that hung loosely on his dramatically thinned frame. A jagged scar crossed his brow, his dark hair was swept back, and his eyes—burning with an absolute, terrifying fury—swept across the room like a executioner's blade.

Sterling leaped out of his chair so fast he knocked his crystal glass flying, shattering it against the floor in a shower of amber liquid and jagged crystal.

"V-Everett?" Sterling stammered, his color draining entirely, his hands shaking violently. "T-That's impossible... the doctors said..."

"The doctors lied," Everett rasped, his voice cutting through the room like thunder. He took a slow, deliberate step forward into the study, his gaze locking onto Victor Vance, who had frozen in his armchair like a statue of stone.

"You..." Everett breathed, his eyes narrowing at his cousin. "You thought you could bury me in my own bed, Sterling? You thought my empire was up for grabs while my body was still warm?"

Sterling backed away until his thighs hit the edge of the desk, sheer panic twisting his features. "Cousin... wait... we can explain... Vance said—"

"Vance is a parasite," Everett interrupted, raising his right hand.

From the hallway behind him, four armed men in black tactical gear stepped into the room, their assault rifles raised and locked squarely on Sterling, Vance, and Whitfield. These weren't Sterling’s hired thugs; these were Everett’s personal, blood-sworn loyalists—men who had been locked out of the estate by Sterling's blockade for eight long months.

Dr. Whitfield didn't wait to be arrested. He spun around toward the French doors leading to the garden, sprinting with desperate speed.

"Don't let him leave," Everett commanded quietly.

One of the guards raised a tranquilizer rifle, fired once, and Whitfield hit the Persian rug with a dull thud, unconscious before he even hit the floor.

Sterling fell to his knees, his polished demeanor completely shattered. "Everett... please... we're family..."

Everett stopped standing right beside me. Slowly, deliberately, he reached out and gently slid his hand over mine, his fingers warm, strong, and entirely steady.

"Family," Everett repeated, looking down at Sterling with absolute disdain. "You tried to turn my wife into a scapegoat and murder me in my sleep. In my world, family gets buried deepest."
