CHAPTER 4 – The Chief's Secret

Detective Marcus Hale stared at the frozen television screen.

His hands had gone numb.

He replayed the last three seconds of the VHS tape.

Again.

And again.

The shadow standing behind Isabella's father never fully appeared.

Only a silhouette.

But the voice...

There was no mistake.

Marcus had worked with Chief Daniel Brooks for eighteen years.

He knew that calm, commanding voice better than his own.

The recording ended with one chilling sentence.

"Finish the Carter family before sunrise."

Marcus slowly ejected the tape.

His heartbeat pounded in his ears.

If the Chief of Police had been involved from the beginning...

Then every investigation over the past twelve years had been controlled from the inside.

Every piece of evidence.

Every witness.

Every arrest.

Every lie.

Someone hadn't simply hidden a crime.

They had rewritten history.

Meanwhile...

Room 1708.

St. Mary's Hospital.

Ethan Carter remained unconscious.

Machines beeped steadily around him.

Outside the ICU, Isabella refused to leave.

Her wedding ring was still stained with Ethan's blood.

She kept replaying the moment she drove the knife into his chest.

His face.

His eyes.

He hadn't looked surprised.

He had looked... disappointed.

As though he had expected this day to come.

A nurse approached quietly.

"Mrs. Carter?"

Isabella looked up.

"Your husband regained consciousness for a few seconds."

She jumped to her feet.

"He did? Can I see him?"

The nurse hesitated.

"He only said one sentence before passing out again."

"What did he say?"

The nurse swallowed.

"He said..."

'Check the blue violin.'

Across town...

Chief Daniel Brooks stood inside police headquarters, calmly answering questions from reporters.

"The suspect is in custody?"

"No."

"Is Ethan Carter expected to survive?"

"We're doing everything possible."

He looked sincere.

Confident.

Concerned.

Not a single journalist suspected that less than an hour earlier...

His voice had been captured on a twelve-year-old tape ordering a murder.

As cameras flashed around him, his phone vibrated once.

Unknown Number.

One text message.

Marcus watched the tape.

For the first time all day...

The Chief smiled.

Very slowly.

"So..."

"It finally begins."

Detective Marcus didn't tell anyone about the recording.

Not even his closest partner.

He quietly copied the VHS tape onto a secure drive and hid the original inside an evidence locker under a fake case number.

Then he headed toward Ethan's mansion.

If Ethan had left clues...

They would be there.

The mansion was eerily silent.

Most staff had already been questioned by police.

Marcus searched Ethan's private office.

Nothing.

Bookshelves.

Nothing.

The safe.

Empty.

He was about to leave when he noticed something strange.

A framed family photograph hanging slightly crooked.

He removed it.

Behind the wall...

Was a hidden fingerprint scanner.

The scanner lit up.

ACCESS DENIED.

Then a female voice echoed through the room.

"Emergency protocol activated."

A hidden drawer slid open.

Inside lay only one object.

A tiny blue violin.

Marcus froze.

"The blue violin..."

He carefully picked it up.

It felt much heavier than it should.

He twisted the neck gently.

Click.

The violin split into two halves.

Inside...

Was a black memory card.

And another handwritten note.

If Isabella is holding this... I'm already dead.

Marcus immediately called the hospital.

No answer.

He tried Isabella's phone.

Straight to voicemail.

At that exact moment...

Three black SUVs without license plates pulled into St. Mary's Hospital.

Twelve heavily armed men stepped out wearing police tactical uniforms.

They flashed official badges.

"Emergency prisoner transfer."

The nurses didn't question them.

Why would they?

The paperwork carried the signature of Chief Daniel Brooks himself.

They pushed Ethan's hospital bed toward the elevator.

No one noticed.

Except one elderly janitor quietly mopping the hallway.

He looked up.

Studied the badges for three seconds.

Then whispered to himself...

"Wrong department."

He abandoned his mop.

Pulled an old flip phone from his pocket.

And dialed a number from memory.

When the call connected, he spoke only five words.

"They're taking the wrong son."

The person on the other end didn't reply.

They simply hung up.

Exactly thirty seconds later...

Every light inside St. Mary's Hospital went out.

Gunfire echoed through the dark corridors.

And Ethan Carter disappeared.
