Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Execution

The emergency board meeting of Blackwood Capital Partners was called for 9:00 AM on Friday morning.
The thirty-second floor of the Blackwood Tower in downtown Chicago commanded a panoramic view of Lake Michigan. Around the massive oval table made of imported Brazilian walnut sat twelve of the most powerful financial titans in America.
At the head of the table sat Judge Arthur Vance, looking immaculate in a tailored pinstripe suit, sipping black coffee and reviewing a document.
"Where is Richard?" asked Howard Sterling, a major shareholder. "His wife’s scandal is splashing all over the news. Our stock dropped eight percent at the opening bell! We need to vote on an interim CEO to stabilize the firm until he handles his domestic issues."
"Richard is under immense emotional distress," Arthur Vance said smoothly, his voice deep and reassuring like a seasoned judge. "Finding out his wife was abusing his son... it’s a tragedy. I spoke to him yesterday. I suggested he take a six-month leave of absence to focus on his child. In the meantime, as head trustee, I am prepared to step in as acting CEO."
"That seems like the most prudent move," another board member agreed. "We can't have a CEO whose household is an active crime scene."
"I second the motion," Arthur said, raising his pen. "Let us take a vote to strip Richard Blackwood of his executive powers temporarily—"
before Arthur could finish his sentence, the heavy double doors of the boardroom were pushed open with tremendous force.
Richard Blackwood walked into the room.
He wasn't wearing a suit. He was wearing dark jeans, a plain black t-shirt, and a leather jacket. His face was cold, sharp, and entirely devoid of the weary, distracted look he had carried for the last four years.
Beside him walked four uniformed agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, led by Special Agent-in-Charge Miller.
The boardroom went deathly quiet. Several directors stood up in shock.
"Richard?" Arthur Vance said, his eyes narrowing slightly behind his designer glasses, though his voice remained perfectly controlled. "What is the meaning of this interruption? This is a private board meeting."
"The meeting is over, Arthur," Richard said, walking slowly down the center of the room until he stood directly opposite the judge.
"Richard, please," Arthur smiled patronizingly, holding up his hands. "I know you are upset about Cassandra’s arrest, but bringing federal agents into a corporate governance meeting is an overreaction. We are trying to protect your company while you... heal."
"You're not protecting my company, Arthur," Richard said calmly, resting his hands on the back of a leather chair. "You’re trying to steal it. Just like you stole my wife’s life four years ago."
A collective gasp echoed through the room.
"That is slander!" Arthur snapped, his face darkening. "I have been a friend to this family for twenty years! I loved Clara like a daughter!"
"Is that why you paid Julian Vance two million dollars to cut her brake lines?" Richard asked.
He nodded to Agent Miller.
The FBI agent stepped forward and placed a heavy metal briefcase on the table, flipping open the latches. Inside were stacks of printed bank records, audio transcriptions, and a federal arrest warrant signed by the United States District Court.
"Judge Arthur Vance," Agent Miller declared loudly. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, racketeering, securities fraud, and money laundering involving offshore accounts tied to Aegis Holdings."
Arthur’s mask finally cracked. His face went gray. "This is a setup! My nephew... Marcus... where is Marcus?!"
"Marcus is outside, Arthur," Richard said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper that echoed in the silent room. "He gave the Department of Justice full access to your private judicial files two hours ago. Every bribe you took, every case you fixed, every dollar you stole from my firm... it’s all in federal hands."
Arthur looked around the table. The board members—men who had played golf with him, men who had toasted his appointments—were pulling away from him in horror.
"You think you won, Richard?" Arthur snarled as two FBI agents stepped up behind him and grabbed his arms, pulling him out of his leather chair. "You're a miserable excuse for a father! You spent four years counting your billions while your own son was starved in your own basement! You didn't even notice your wife was dead before she hit the water! You’re just as guilty as I am!"
The words were meant to wound, meant to crush Richard’s spirit in front of his peers.
Richard didn't flinch. He looked Arthur straight in the eye, his expression completely unreadable.
"I was blind, Arthur," Richard said softly. "But my eyes are open now. And the first thing I’m going to watch is you spending the rest of your life in a maximum-security prison."
As the FBI dragged the screaming judge out of the executive suite, Richard turned to the remaining board members, who were sitting frozen in terror.

"Meeting adjourned," Richard said flatly. "And for those of you who voted with Arthur over the last three years... my legal team will be reviewing your personal accounts by noon."
Without waiting for a response, Richard turned around and walked out of the building he had spent his entire life building, leaving the empire behind without looking back once.
