Chapter 4 - THE COUNTERSTRIKE

The news of the sudden purge at Whitaker Construction swept through the regional business community like wildfire.

Desperate to save face and force me to back down, the Collins family launched a smear campaign. Claire hire a notorious, aggressive celebrity divorce attorney named Arthur Sterling. Within forty-eight hours, local news outlets and social media channels were flooded with fabricated stories claiming that I was a ruthless corporate tycoon who had secretly emotionally abused my wife and abandoned her family during the holidays.

Claire gave a televised interview outside her father’s mansion, wearing a simple outfit, shedding fake tears for the cameras.

"I spent eight years supporting a man I thought was a modest worker," Claire sobbed into the microphones. "Only to find out he was hiding tens of millions of dollars from me, manipulating my family, and leaving us destitute in the middle of winter. I am demanding 50% of Whitaker Construction, full alimony, and punitive damages for emotional distress."

The public narrative briefly turned against me. Social media stormed with outrage. Activists protested outside our corporate branches, and several minor sub-contractors threatened to freeze ongoing projects due to the negative press.

My board of investors panicked.

"Daniel, this public relations disaster is sinking our stock valuation!" shouted Harold Croft, one of our major minority shareholders, during an emergency board meeting. "The media is eating this up! They see you as a cold-hearted billionaire who duped a family! You need to settle with her! Give her $5 million and make this go away!"

I sat at the head of the boardroom table, calmly drinking my dark coffee.

"We don't settle with extortionists, Harold," I said quietly.

"Then what is your plan?" Croft demanded. "She’s filing for emergency temporary spousal support tomorrow! Her lawyer is asking for $150,000 a month in emergency funding!"

"My plan," I smiled faintly, "is to let them dig their own grave deep enough that no lawyer in the world can pull them out."

I turned to Marcus Vance. "Is the security footage from Christmas Eve restored?"

"Fully rendered, HD video and audio, Daniel," Vance replied, sliding a flash drive across the table. " captured from three different angles—including the high-definition driveway camera Martin installed last month."

"Good," I said, standing up. "Call a national press conference for tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM. Invite every major news outlet, local station, and legal blogger in the tri-state area."

That night, Claire called my personal phone sixteen times. I didn't answer. Then, at 11:30 PM, a text message came through from her number:

“Daniel, please. We can talk about this. Dad is having chest pains. Todd is losing his home. I know I made a mistake on Christmas, but I was just stressed. You loved me once. Don't ruin my family over a misunderstanding. Come home.”

I looked at the screen, thought of Sophie’s shaking, freezing hands on Christmas Eve, and deleted the message without replying.

The next morning, the grand ballroom of the Cincinnati Hilton was packed with over two hundred journalists, cameramen, and legal analysts. Claire and her attorney, Arthur Sterling, sat in the back row with smug expressions, believing I was calling the press conference to announce a multi-million-dollar settlement to save my reputation.

I walked up to the podium, adjusted the microphone, and looked out into the sea of flashing cameras.

"Ladies and gentlemen," I began, my voice clear and authoritative. "Over the past three days, serious allegations have been made against my character, my business practices, and my integrity as a father. Today, I am here to provide complete, unedited transparency."
