Chapter 6 - Smoke and MirrorsThe sirens of chaos were echoing through the Upper East Side, but inside the Verrone estate, the war had already begun.

Thick, billowing black smoke poured from the west wing of the mansion as a incendiary grenade thrown by Marchetti’s men scorched the historic mahogany paneling. Glass shattered across the marble foyer as tactical operatives in black balaclavas smashed through the Georgian windows, sweeping room by room, hunting for Elena Miller and the child.

"Clear the hallway!" shouted Marcus, a senior captain in the Marchetti syndicate, leveling his submachine gun as he kicked open the door to the master study.

The room was empty. Only the faint hum of a grandfather clock broke the silence.

"Boss is gonna pay a fortune for this," one of the mercenaries muttered, checking his ammo clip. "Marchetti wants the kid dead to break Verrone's spirit once and for all. Shows the whole underworld that the king can't protect his own."

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the study slammed shut behind them with a deafening bang.

The two mercenaries whipped around, raising their weapons. But the room was pitch black—someone had cut the main power lines. The emergency red backup lights flickered to life, casting an eerie, blood-red glow across the bookshelves.

"Who's there?!" Marcus barked, his voice echoing in the confined space.

From the shadows near the fireplace, a single figure stepped forward.

Rafael Conti stood with his arms folded across his chest, a suppressed pistol held loosely in his right hand. He didn't look panicked; he looked bored, like a man waiting for a late train.

"You boys picked the wrong house," Rafael said softly.

"Kill him!" Marcus roared.

Before the mercenaries could pull their triggers, the floor beneath them dropped. It wasn't a trapdoor—it was a coordinated ambush. From the concealed panic room vents above, high-pressure carbon dioxide flooded the study, blinding the intruders in a thick, freezing fog.

Rafael moved with lightning speed. Two suppressed shots rang out in rapid succession. Marcus’s men dropped to the floor, unconscious before they even hit the Persian rug.

Marcus stumbled backward, coughing violently as the freezing gas burned his lungs, leveling his gun wildly toward Rafael. "You think you won, you bastards?! Marchetti has already sent a second team to the elementary school! Verrone thinks he's protecting the brat there, but he walked right into a slaughterhouse!"

Rafael stopped dead. His eyes widened slightly. A second team?

Before Marcus could pull the trigger, a shadow detached itself from the ceiling beam directly above the mercenary.

A heavy steel boot came crashing down onto Marcus’s wrist, shattering bone and sending the submachine gun clattering across the floor. Before the mercenary could scream, a heavy hand grabbed him by the throat, hoisting him three feet into the air with terrifying, inhuman strength.

It wasn't Rafael.

Elena Miller stood in the doorway, having just emerged from the safe room, her face pale with horror as she watched a massive, scarred enforcer of Verrone's personal guard choke the life out of the intruder.

"Rafael," a voice crackled over the secure comms earpiece in Rafael’s ear. It was Damiano. The line was dead silent for a second, save for the faint sound of children laughing in the background of P.S. 42’s cafeteria. "Repeat what he just said."

Rafael tapped his earpiece, his voice tight with alarm. "Boss... Marchetti sent a second strike team to the school. They know you're there with Lily."

A long, agonizing pause hung over the line.

When Damiano spoke, there was no anger left in his voice. There was only the cold, empty void of a man who had nothing left to lose.

"Tell Elena to lock the estate doors," Damiano whispered. "And tell Marchetti... tell him I'm coming home early."
