Chapter 13 - The Golden PressThe offices of Veritas Press occupied the entire top floor of a restored 19th-century brick building in DUMBO, overlooking the sunlit expanse of the East River and the towering pillars of the Brooklyn Bridge.

When I stepped off the private elevator, the hum of creativity was unmistakable. Phones were ringing softly, editors were huddled over manuscript drafts in the glass-walled conference room, and the scent of fresh espresso drifted from the communal breakroom.
“Claire!”
Elena Vance stepped out of her office holding a stack of galleys, her blonde hair cut into a sharp, professional bob, her eyes bright and focused.
When Vanessa had brought us the encrypted files four years ago regarding Elena—the woman Grant had tried to silence in Geneva using a nearly identical playbook to Project Janus—I had tracked her down, offered her a legal sanctuary, and eventually hired her to head our European investigative division.
Today, Elena wasn't just an employee; she was one of my closest friends and the fiercest investigative journalist in New York.
“Tell me you’ve read the final revisions for the corporate whistleblowing anthology,” Elena said, handing me the manuscript stack with a triumphant grin.
I flipped open the cover, scanning the introduction. The prose was sharp, fearless, and deeply human—giving a voice to the hundreds of women who had been marginalized, silenced, and financially erased by the elite corporate machinery of Wall Street.
“It’s brilliant, Elena,” I said, looking up with a proud smile. “This is going straight to the top of the New York Times bestseller list within a week of release.”
“That’s because we have an editor-in-chief who doesn't take no for an answer,” Elena laughed, walking beside me toward my corner office overlooking the river.

As I sat down behind my custom oak desk, looking out at the panoramic view of the Manhattan skyline across the water, I felt a deep, resonant peace settling into my bones.
The city that had once felt like a gilded cage designed to crush me was now just a distant backdrop to an empire I had built with my own hands, brick by legal brick, truth by truth.
