Chapter 6 - THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT

Three months later.

The high-rise glass courtroom on the 14th floor of the Manhattan Federal District Court was packed to absolute capacity. Journalists from every major network in the country were shoved shoulder-to-shoulder, their cameras flashing relentlessly against the glass partition.

I sat at the prosecution table, wearing a crisp, tailored navy-blue suit, my hair swept back in a flawless, professional chignon. Beside me sat my lead legal strategist and Elena, who held a leather folder containing our final corporate restructuring filings.

Across the room, at the defense table, sat Lucian Moretti.

He looked unrecognizable. The arrogant, commanding mob chief was gone, replaced by a sunken, frail shadow of a man sitting in an orange prison jumpsuit, his wrists and ankles bound by heavy iron chains. His hair had turned silver at the temples, and his dark eyes were hollowed out, staring vacantly at the table in front of him.

Beside him sat Bianca Romano, wearing a neck brace and an orange jumpsuit of her own, awaiting her extradition back to Italy on international trafficking charges.

The judge slammed his heavy wooden gavel against the block, echoing through the silent room like a gunshot.

“Order in the court,” Judge Callahan announced, adjusting his spectacles. “We are here for the final sentencing and asset disposition in the matter of the United States v. Lucian Moretti.”

The lead federal prosecutor stood up, smoothing his tie. “Your Honor, under the terms of the cooperation agreement negotiated by Mrs. Serena Vance—formerly Moretti—the defendant has agreed to plead guilty to all seventeen counts of racketeering, wire fraud, and conspiracy.”

The prosecutor turned to face the gallery, gesturing toward me.

“Furthermore, all seized corporate holdings, including the Moretti Real Estate Trust, the shipping lines at Pier 42, and the international equity funds, totaling 1.2 billion dollars, have been legally transferred to the Vance Foundation—a charitable trust established for the victims of organized crime, managed exclusively by Mrs. Vance.”

A collective gasp rippled through the courtroom press corps. The entire financial infrastructure of the East Coast’s most powerful crime family hadn't just been dismantled—it had been converted into a philanthropic empire run by the woman they tried to discard.

Judge Callahan looked down at Lucian. “Does the defendant wish to make a statement before sentence is passed?”

Lucian slowly stood up, the iron chains around his wrists rattling loudly in the quiet room. He didn't look at the judge. He didn't look at his lawyer. He looked straight at me.

“I have no defense, Your Honor,” Lucian said, his voice a hoarse, broken whisper. “I made a choice... and I lost everything that mattered. I only ask for one thing.”

The judge raised an eyebrow. “And what is that?”

Lucian’s eyes welled with fresh tears as he stared at me. “Let me see my son. Just once. Let me hold him for five minutes... before I go.”

The courtroom fell dead silent. Dozens of eyes turned from Lucian to me, waiting to see if the cold heart of the woman who destroyed an empire would melt for a single second of mercy.

I stood up slowly, smoothing the front of my jacket. I looked at the man I had once sworn to love until death did us part.

“Your Honor,” I said, my voice steady, clear, and ringing with absolute finality. “Nico Vance is currently three months old. He is healthy, he is safe, and he is surrounded by people who love him. The man sitting in those chains is a stranger to him. And he will remain a stranger for the rest of his life.”

Lucian flinched as if I had struck him across the face with a blade. He sank back down into his chair, covering his face with his chained hands, his shoulders shaking with silent, uncontrollable sobs.

Judge Callahan nodded solemnly. “So ordered. Lucian Moretti, I sentence you to consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole at the ADX Florence Supermax facility.”

The gavel came down with a thunderous BANG.
