Chapter 9 - THE ULTIMATE CHECKMATEThrough the doorway walked three individuals: Special Agent Miller of the FBI, a senior investigative journalist from the Wall Street Journal, and—most shockingly—Jonathan Thorne’s own Chief Financial Officer, who had agreed to a federal plea deal twenty minutes prior.

Thorne’s arrogant smile vanished instantly. All the color drained from his face as the FBI agent flashed a federal arrest warrant directly into his designer lapel.

"Jonathan Thorne, you are under arrest for federal racketeering, securities fraud, conspiracy to commit industrial sabotage, and coercion," Agent Miller announced, clicking the heavy steel cuffs onto Thorne's wrists with practiced precision.

Thorne thrashed backward, glaring at me with rabid fury. "You set me up! This is a trap!"

"No, Jonathan," I said, standing up from my desk and walking around to stand face-to-face with the man who thought he could steal my legacy. "This is what happens when you underestimate an old man who learned how to walk through hell and come out the other side."

The bodyguards made a half-hearted move toward their jackets, but two federal backup units flooded the hallway, their tactical vests and sidearms making it instantly clear that resistance was futile.

As Thorne was hauled away in handcuffs, his expensive suit rumpled and his face twisted in utter defeat, the journalist looked at me, pen poised over his notepad.

"Mr. Caldwell, what's next for Caldwell Marine? Do you plan on retiring now that the threat has been neutralized?"

May you like

I looked past the reporter out the large glass window of my office, watching the sun break through the Baltimore clouds, casting golden light over the sprawling shipyards where four hundred hardworking employees went about their day, safe and secure.

"Retire?" I smiled, buttoning my jacket. "I’m just getting started."
