Chapter 5 – The Daughter They Erased From His Life

Michael Parker's body lay motionless beneath the rain.

The paramedics covered him with a white sheet.

No one spoke.

Daniel remained on his knees beside his brother, unable to accept what he had just heard.

"They took... your daughter."

The words repeated endlessly inside his mind.

His daughter.

Impossible.

Margaret had never told him she was pregnant.

After the crash, every doctor, every police officer, every hospital report had said exactly the same thing.

Margaret Parker died at the scene.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

No mention of a child.

No mention of a pregnancy.

Nothing.

Laura finally knelt beside him.

"Daniel..."

He looked at her with hollow eyes.

"Tell me this is impossible."

She couldn't.

Instead, she quietly asked,

"Did Margaret ever act... differently during the weeks before the accident?"

Daniel closed his eyes.

At first...

Nothing came.

Then memories surfaced.

Tiny ones.

The kind grief had buried beneath twelve years of loneliness.

Margaret refusing wine during dinner.

Laughing when Daniel teased her about suddenly craving strawberries in the middle of winter.

Buying a tiny pair of knitted baby socks at a charity market.

When he had asked who they were for...

She had smiled mysteriously.

"You'll find out soon enough."

Daniel's breathing stopped.

The socks.

He remembered the socks.

His eyes flew open.

"Oh, my God..."

Laura saw the realization on his face.

"What is it?"

"I thought..."

"I thought she was planning a surprise."

His voice cracked.

"I had forgotten."

Laura's expression turned grave.

"If Margaret was pregnant..."

"...someone erased every trace of it."

Inside the mansion, detectives searched every room.

Evidence boxes filled the foyer.

Officers interviewed every employee.

Richard sat silently in the library under police supervision.

He had confessed enough to destroy decades of trust.

But not enough to explain everything.

Daniel entered the library.

Everyone else quietly stepped outside.

Only Richard remained.

The old butler looked twenty years older than he had that morning.

"I suppose you hate me now."

Daniel's voice was cold.

"I don't know what I feel."

Richard nodded sadly.

"You deserve answers."

"I deserve the truth."

"You always did."

Daniel stood over him.

"Did Margaret have a baby?"

Richard closed his eyes.

For a long time...

He said nothing.

Then tears rolled down his weathered face.

"Yes."

Daniel staggered backward.

"No..."

"She did."

"A little girl."

The room spun.

Daniel grabbed the edge of a bookshelf to stay upright.

"When?"

"The night of the accident."

"No."

Richard nodded.

"Margaret didn't die immediately."

Daniel's heartbeat thundered in his ears.

"The ambulance..."

"...reached her alive."

Laura, standing just outside the doorway, froze.

"That isn't what the official report says."

Richard looked at her.

"The official report was rewritten."

Silence crashed over the room.

Richard continued.

"Margaret was taken into emergency surgery."

"The doctors managed to save the baby."

Daniel whispered,

"Our daughter..."

Richard nodded.

"She lived."

Daniel felt as if the air had disappeared.

"My daughter lived..."

Richard couldn't meet his eyes.

"For several hours, everyone believed both mother and child would survive."

"What happened?"

Richard's shoulders shook.

"Margaret regained consciousness."

Daniel's heart leaped.

"She woke up?"

"For a few minutes."

Richard's voice barely rose above a whisper.

"Her first question wasn't about herself."

"It wasn't about the accident."

"It wasn't even about you."

Daniel frowned.

"What did she ask?"

Richard looked straight at him.

"'Is my little girl breathing?'"

Daniel covered his face.

A sob escaped before he could stop it.

Richard continued.

"The nurse said yes."

"Margaret smiled."

"It was the last smile anyone ever saw."

Laura quietly wiped away a tear.

"What happened after that?"

Richard's expression darkened.

"Three men arrived."

"Wearing expensive suits."

"They weren't family."

"They weren't police."

"They carried documents."

Daniel's stomach tightened.

"The Blackwoods?"

Richard slowly shook his head.

"No."

"They worked for your father."

Daniel stared at him.

"My father was at the hospital?"

Richard nodded.

"He arrived before sunrise."

"He ordered everyone except one doctor to leave the room."

"What doctor?"

Richard swallowed.

"Dr. Samuel Brooks."

Laura frowned.

"I know that name."

"He disappeared."

Richard nodded.

"Exactly."

Daniel leaned closer.

"What did my father do?"

Richard whispered,

"He offered the doctor a fortune."

"For what?"

"To declare the baby dead."

Daniel felt rage unlike anything he had ever known.

"No..."

Richard nodded through tears.

"The doctor refused."

"What happened then?"

Richard's voice broke.

"He vanished two days later."

"No resignation."

"No forwarding address."

"No body."

"Nothing."

Laura immediately pulled out her notebook.

"We've searched for Dr. Brooks before."

Richard looked at her.

"You never searched where they buried the truth."

Daniel slowly walked toward the fireplace.

Above it hung the largest portrait in the mansion.

His father.

Charles Parker.

Smiling confidently.

The man newspapers had called a visionary.

The man Daniel had admired all his life.

The man Richard now claimed had stolen a fortune...

Covered up a murder...

And stolen his own granddaughter.

Daniel stared into the painted eyes.

Then, without warning—

He ripped the portrait from the wall.

It crashed into the marble hearth.

Glass exploded across the room.

Every servant outside gasped.

Daniel had never once raised his voice inside the mansion.

Tonight...

He picked up the heavy frame and smashed it again.

And again.

Until nothing remained except splintered wood.

He turned to Richard.

"If my daughter lived..."

"...where is she?"

Richard slowly reached into his jacket.

"I've carried this for twelve years."

He removed a small brass key.

Old.

Worn smooth with age.

Daniel took it.

"What does it open?"

Richard answered quietly.

"A safety deposit box."

"Whose?"

"Margaret's."

Daniel stared at the tiny key.

"I thought everything she owned came here."

Richard shook his head.

"She never trusted your father."

"She opened the box three weeks before she died."

"And inside?"

Richard looked directly into Daniel's eyes.

"I've never seen it."

"But Margaret told me one thing."

"What?"

"'If anything happens to me... this box will tell Daniel where to find our daughter.'"

Daniel's heart pounded.

For the first time in twelve years...

He had hope.

Real hope.

But before anyone could speak again—

One of the detectives burst into the library.

"Mr. Parker!"

Daniel turned.

"What is it?"

"We just identified the fingerprint from the letter."

Daniel held his breath.

"It belongs to someone who officially died eleven years ago."

Laura frowned.

"Who?"

The detective swallowed.

"Dr. Samuel Brooks."

The missing doctor.

The last man known to have held Daniel Parker's newborn daughter.

According to every government record...

He had been dead for more than a decade.

May you like

Yet somehow...

His fingerprints had been left on Margaret's letter only three days earlier.
