Chapter 2 — The Witness Nobody Believed

For the first time that afternoon, Daniel Ashford forgot to breathe.

The tiny gold button resting in Lily's palm gleamed beneath the crystal chandeliers like a silent accusation.

It wasn't just any button.

It had been sewn by hand onto the sleeve of Daniel's custom wedding tuxedo—a design made exclusively for him by an Italian tailor. Each button carried the Ashford family crest engraved on solid gold, a detail so subtle that almost no one would recognize it.

No one...

Except Daniel.

His heartbeat thundered in his ears.

How did she find it?

He remembered brushing against Emily near the grand staircase.

He remembered slipping the diamond brooch into the hidden fold of her apron while pretending to straighten the flowers.

He remembered hearing a faint metallic click.

He had never looked down.

Now he knew exactly what had fallen.

The button.

And somehow...

The little girl had picked it up.

Emily clung to Lily, tears running freely down her face.

"Lily, sweetheart..."

The little girl looked up with frightened hazel eyes.

"The nice man touched your apron, Mommy."

The ballroom became perfectly still.

Every conversation died.

Emily frowned.

"What did you say?"

"He touched your pocket."

Lily pointed across the room.

Straight at Daniel.

"I saw him."

Daniel forced an easy laugh.

"She's only three."

His smile looked convincing.

His eyes did not.

Children imagined things all the time.

Everyone knew that.

Didn't they?

Eleanor Ashford stepped forward before anyone else could speak.

"Enough."

Her voice carried the authority of someone accustomed to ending arguments with a single word.

"The child is confused."

Caroline nodded quickly.

"She must be."

Daniel placed a reassuring arm around his fiancée.

"This has already been stressful enough."

He looked sympathetically toward Emily.

"I'm sorry your daughter had to witness all of this."

The words sounded compassionate.

But Emily noticed something strange.

Daniel had not looked at Lily once since she pointed at him.

Not once.

He was staring only at the tiny gold button.

As though it frightened him more than the missing brooch ever had.

Detective Michael Grant, the first officer to arrive, crouched in front of Lily.

His voice softened.

"Hi there."

Lily sniffled.

"My name's Mike."

She stared silently.

"Can you tell me where you found the shiny button?"

Emily hesitated.

"Lily..."

"It's okay," the detective said gently.

"I'm just listening."

Lily wiped her nose on her sleeve.

"By the flowers."

"What flowers?"

"The big white flowers."

She stretched both arms as wide as she could.

"The pretty flowers."

Emily's heart skipped.

The arrangement beside the grand staircase.

The exact place where Daniel had stopped her earlier.

Detective Grant stood slowly.

He turned toward Daniel.

"You were near those flowers today?"

Daniel answered without hesitation.

"Several times."

"It's my wedding."

The answer sounded perfectly reasonable.

Almost too reasonable.

The detective nodded thoughtfully.

"And Miss Harper?"

Daniel smiled politely.

"I thanked her for arranging them."

Emily suddenly remembered.

His hand.

His sleeve brushing against her apron.

The strange uneasy feeling she had ignored.

A chill raced through her body.

"No..."

She whispered to herself.

"No..."

Across the ballroom, Mrs. Baines quietly stepped forward.

"I saw them."

Everyone looked at her.

"I saw Mr. Ashford speaking with Emily."

Daniel's jaw tightened almost invisibly.

"It lasted only a few seconds," Mrs. Baines continued.

"I thought nothing of it."

Detective Grant asked calmly,

"Did you see physical contact?"

Mrs. Baines closed her eyes, replaying the memory.

"Yes."

"He reached toward her apron."

Daniel answered before anyone else could.

"The flowers were slipping."

Mrs. Baines nodded uncertainly.

"I assumed that was why."

Detective Grant made no comment.

Instead, he wrote something in his notebook.

One line.

Then another.

Caroline felt the room shifting.

An hour earlier, everyone had admired her dress.

Now hundreds of eyes were quietly drifting toward her groom.

She laughed nervously.

"This is ridiculous."

"No one believes Daniel would steal his own family's heirloom."

Nobody answered.

That silence frightened her more than any accusation.

Meanwhile, Lily tugged on Emily's sleeve again.

"Mommy..."

Emily kissed her forehead.

"What is it?"

"The nice man looked angry."

"When?"

"When he dropped the shiny thing."

Emily froze.

"What do you mean?"

Lily lowered her voice to a whisper.

"He looked at me."

"And then he smiled."

"But..."

Her little lip trembled.

"...his eyes were scary."

Emily slowly lifted her head.

Across the ballroom...

Daniel Ashford was already looking back at them.

Still smiling.

But for the first time all afternoon...

There was no warmth behind it.

Only calculation.

Only fear.

And Emily suddenly realized a terrifying truth.

If Daniel had framed her once...

What would stop him from silencing the only witness who could destroy everything?

Little Lily had become the most dangerous person in the Ashford mansion.

She just didn't know it yet.
