Chapter 7 - When Empires Kneel

Evelyn’s face drained of all color. She stood up so fast her leather chair slammed into the wall behind her. “What did you do?!”

“Look out the window, Mother,” Damon said calmly.

Arthur sprinted to the floor-to-ceiling glass.

Eighty stories below, across Times Square, Fifth Avenue, and every major building in Manhattan, massive digital LED billboards were glowing bright red.

Instead of advertisements for luxury watches and high-end fashion, the screens were displaying live, high-definition video of the 80th-floor penthouse.

Overlaid on the bottom of every screen were scrolling bank transactions, pharmaceutical trial death records, and live audio transcripts detailing the crimes of Arthur and Evelyn Blackwell.

The entire city of New York had come to a dead standstill. Drivers were stepping out of their cars on Fifth Avenue, staring up at the giant screens in utter disbelief. Pedestrians pointed their phones at the sky as the audio of Arthur Blackwell boasting about human trials echoed from outdoor speakers across the city.

“Turn it off! Cut the power! Roman, shoot him!” Evelyn screamed, her aristocratic composure completely shattering into hysterical rage.

Roman drew his gun, aiming it at Damon’s head. “Give me the master override code, Damon! Now!”

Damon didn't even blink. He looked down at the barrel of the gun with cold disdain.

“It’s too late, Roman,” Damon said smoothly. “The stream is decentralized. It’s hosted on an encrypted cloud network controlled by a third party outside the country. The only way to stop the broadcast is if I die—and if my heart rate monitor drops to zero, the system automatically releases the full, unredacted federal indictment files directly to the Department of Justice and the Interpol main database.”

Roman’s hand began to shake. He looked from Damon to Evelyn, then down at the giant billboards outside where his own face was currently displayed as an international fugitive.

He realized in an instant: the game was over. The Blackwell money couldn't buy this back. The power was gone.

Slowly, Roman lowered his weapon.

“You coward!” Arthur roared, lunging toward Roman to grab the gun.

Before Arthur could touch it, the heavy double doors of the penthouse suite were blown open with a deafening bang.

“FBI! Nobody move! Hands where we can see them!”

A tactical team of federal agents, backed by armed NYPD officers, poured into the penthouse, weapons raised. Outside the building, the wail of dozens of police sirens cut through the winter night, echoing all the way down Fifth Avenue.

Evelyn collapsed into her chair, her head in her hands, as federal agents surrounded her, slapping steel handcuffs around her manicured wrists. Arthur was slammed against the marble desk, forced down right next to the rag doll that had destroyed his life’s work.

Damon stood in the center of the storm, perfectly calm. He picked up the rag doll from the desk, brushed a speck of dust off its faded blue dress, and walked past the arresting officers toward the elevator.
