CHAPTER 3: THE RECORDING THAT MADE RODRIGO BEG FOR MERCY

The ballroom was no longer a celebration.

It had become a courtroom.

A courtroom where the judge was the truth.

And Rodrigo Alcázar was standing in the middle of it with nowhere left to hide.

The giant screen continued playing.

His own voice echoed through the speakers.

Cold.

Calculating.

Cruel.

"Once the company recovers, I will remove her from the picture."

Every guest heard it.

Every investor.

Every executive.

Every journalist holding a camera.

Nobody could pretend anymore.

The man they had admired for years had just exposed himself.

Rodrigo stood frozen.

His face had lost all color.

—Turn that off.

His voice was low.

Almost a whisper.

—Camila, turn that off right now.

But Camila did not move.

For four years, she had listened to him tell her she was nothing.

Tonight, she wanted him to hear what he had truly said.

Not to her.

Not privately.

But in front of everyone.

The video continued.

A younger Rodrigo sat behind his desk.

His expensive watch reflected the office lights.

He looked confident.

Arrogant.

Like a man who believed he could manipulate the entire world.

Across from him was one of his old financial advisors.

The same man who had disappeared from the company months later.

Rodrigo's voice filled the room.

—My father is getting old. Once the company stabilizes, I will control everything.

The advisor asked:

—And Camila?

Rodrigo laughed.

A cruel laugh.

—Camila is useful. That's all.

A wave of shock moved through the guests.

Some people covered their mouths.

Others looked away.

Because hearing those words was worse than seeing the documents.

The documents proved fraud.

The recording proved his heart.

Rodrigo suddenly walked toward the screen.

—Enough!

His voice cracked.

—This is illegal. You can't expose private conversations.

Camila finally looked at him.

Calm.

Almost peaceful.

—Interesting.

She tilted her head.

—You cared about privacy now?

Rodrigo stopped.

Camila continued.

—When you used company money to pay for Natalia's lifestyle, did you think about privacy?

Silence.

—When you told your mother I was only an accountant?

Silence.

—When you planned to remove me after using my money to save your company?

Silence.

Every word hit harder than a slap.

Don Ernesto slowly approached his son.

The disappointment in his eyes was worse than anger.

—Is it true?

Rodrigo looked at him.

—Father—

—Answer me.

The entire ballroom waited.

Rodrigo looked around.

For the first time, he realized something terrifying.

Nobody was on his side.

Not the investors.

Not the employees.

Not his family.

Not even Natalia.

Especially not Natalia.

She had already stepped away from him.

The woman who entered holding his hand was now pretending she barely knew him.

Rodrigo noticed.

And it hurt his pride more than anything.

—Camila misunderstood everything.

Camila almost laughed.

—After four years, that's your defense?

Suddenly, a voice came from the crowd.

—Mr. Alcázar.

Everyone turned.

It was one of the oldest investors in the company.

A man who had worked with Don Ernesto for thirty years.

—We trusted you because we believed you built this company.

He looked at Camila.

—But apparently, we were wrong.

Another investor spoke:

—If Mrs. Robles had not invested her money, there would be no company to inherit.

Rodrigo clenched his fists.

His entire image was collapsing.

But he still refused to accept defeat.

Because people like Rodrigo Alcázar did not apologize when they lost.

They apologized when they needed something.

And now…

He needed something.

He turned toward Camila.

The arrogance disappeared.

A desperate expression replaced it.

—Camila…

She looked at him.

—What?

His voice softened.

—Please.

The room became silent.

Nobody expected those words.

Rodrigo Alcázar.

The man who never admitted mistakes.

Was begging.

—I made mistakes.

Camila stared at him.

—Mistakes?

She repeated the word slowly.

—You didn't forget our anniversary.

She stepped closer.

—You didn't accidentally fall in love with another woman.

Another step.

—You didn't accidentally steal from the company.

Another step.

—You made choices.

Rodrigo lowered his head.

—I'm sorry.

The guests watched.

Waiting.

Maybe they expected Camila to forgive him.

Maybe they expected the loving wife to return.

But they didn't know the woman standing there anymore.

Four years earlier, Camila would have cried.

Four years earlier, she would have forgiven him.

Four years earlier, she would have blamed herself.

But that woman was gone.

She looked at Rodrigo and said:

—Do you know what hurt the most?

He looked up.

—Not Natalia.

Not the money.

Not even the humiliation.

Her voice became quieter.

—It was realizing that the person I sacrificed everything for was the same person waiting for me to fail.

Rodrigo had no answer.

Because there was none.

Then Don Ernesto spoke.

—There is still one question.

Everyone looked at him.

He turned toward Camila.

—Why did you wait four years?

That question surprised everyone.

Including Rodrigo.

Why had she stayed?

Why had she allowed him to treat her that way?

Camila looked at the crowd.

Then at the screen.

Then at Rodrigo.

—Because I needed proof.

A silence fell.

—If I had left when I discovered the affair, everyone would have said I was an emotional wife.

She looked at Rodrigo.

—If I had taken my money immediately, everyone would have said I was destroying the company.

Her eyes became stronger.

—So I waited.

She touched the folder in her hand.

—Until nobody could deny the truth.

Then the doors of the ballroom opened.

A man in a dark suit entered.

Rodrigo recognized him immediately.

And his blood ran cold.

—No…

Camila looked at the man.

—Thank you for coming, Mr. Salazar.

The guests whispered.

Because everyone knew that name.

Former Chief Financial Officer of Alcázar Corporation.

The man who disappeared four years ago.

The man everyone thought had betrayed the company.

He walked toward the center of the room.

And placed a thick file on the table.

—Mrs. Robles asked me to wait until tonight.

Rodrigo stared at him.

—You were working with her?

The man nodded.

—For four years.

Rodrigo stepped back.

Four years.

That number terrified him.

Because it meant Camila wasn't reacting tonight.

She had been preparing.

Planning.

Waiting.

—What's in that file? —Don Ernesto asked.

The former CFO opened it.

His expression was serious.

—Proof that Rodrigo Alcázar attempted to secretly transfer company ownership before the rescue was complete.

The room exploded.

But then he added:

—And proof that someone inside the family helped him.

Everyone turned.

Slowly.

Toward Beatriz Alcázar.

Rodrigo's mother.

Beatriz's face became pale.

—That's impossible.

Camila looked at her.

For the first time that night…

She smiled.

Because the final secret was not about Rodrigo.

It was bigger.

Much bigger.

—No, Beatriz.

Camila said quietly.

—The truth is that Rodrigo was never working alone.

The ballroom went silent.

And Beatriz realized…

Her own secret had just walked into the room.
