Chapter 5 — “Take the Little Girl!” The CEO Turned Around… and Emma Was Gone

The scream echoed across the hospital parking lot.
"MAMA!"
Grace spun around so fast she nearly collapsed again.
Her heart monitor had barely been removed fifteen minutes earlier.
Now she was running.
Not because her body could.
Because she was a mother.
Daniel reached the sidewalk just in time to see a black SUV speeding away from the curb.
Its rear tires sprayed slush across the road.
The back passenger door slammed shut.
Emma's little green mitten lay in the snow.
Empty.
Grace's knees gave out.
"Emma!"
Her voice cracked so violently that everyone in the parking lot froze.
Daniel didn't hesitate.
He ripped open the driver's door of his own SUV.
"Get in!"
Grace climbed inside before the sentence was finished.
The chase had begun.
The black SUV raced through the narrow streets of Woodstock.
Daniel kept his eyes locked on it.
His hands were steady.
His mind wasn't.
Emma's frightened face flashed through his memory.
The little girl who had carried two pancakes across a diner because she couldn't bear seeing a stranger eat alone.
Now she was somewhere inside that vehicle.
Alone.
Terrified.
Grace stared through the windshield, trembling uncontrollably.
"This is my fault."
Daniel didn't answer.
"If I hadn't talked to you..."
"If I hadn't collapsed..."
"If Emma had stayed inside..."
Daniel finally spoke.
"No."
"This isn't your fault."
"It's the fault of whoever decided a child was something that could be used."
Grace covered her mouth to stop herself from crying.
She failed.
Inside the SUV...
Emma sat between two men.
She wasn't screaming anymore.
She was thinking.
Her mother always said panic makes smart people forget simple things.
So Emma watched.
She counted.
One driver.
One man beside her.
A silver watch.
A dragon tattoo.
A coffee stain on the passenger seat.
The license plate began with Vermont letters.
She repeated everything silently in her head.
Then she noticed something else.
The man beside her looked nervous.
Very nervous.
She whispered,
"Are you scared too?"
The man looked surprised.
"What?"
"My mommy says people only do bad things when they're afraid of somebody."
The kidnapper stared at her.
She didn't look angry.
She didn't look hateful.
She looked...
Concerned.
The little girl reached into her pocket.
Pulled out half of a wrapped peppermint she'd saved from the hospital.
She held it toward him.
"You can have it."
The man didn't move.
"It's good when you're scared."
For several seconds...
Neither of them spoke.
Then he slowly looked away.
Back in Daniel's SUV...
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered through the dashboard speaker.
A cold voice filled the vehicle.
"You care about that little girl already."
Daniel gripped the steering wheel tighter.
"Who are you?"
"Someone trying to teach you a lesson."
"What lesson?"
"Heroes are expensive."
Grace covered her mouth.
Daniel remained calm.
"If you hurt her..."
The man interrupted.
"You'll do exactly what I say."
The line went dead.
Daniel immediately pressed another button.
"Michael?"
His head of security answered instantly.
"Sir."
"I need every available investigator in Vermont."
"What happened?"
"A six-year-old girl has been kidnapped."
There was no pause.
"No police?"
Daniel looked ahead.
"Not yet."
"Understood."
"I'll have everyone moving within five minutes."
Daniel disconnected.
Grace stared at him.
"You have people like that?"
Daniel nodded once.
"They usually protect me."
He looked toward the disappearing SUV.
"Today..."
"They protect Emma."
Twenty minutes later...
The black SUV suddenly left the highway.
It turned onto an abandoned logging road deep inside the forest.
Daniel followed.
Snow covered everything.
No houses.
No traffic.
No witnesses.
Then...
The SUV stopped.
Daniel slammed on his brakes.
The kidnappers stepped out.
One held Emma's hand.
Not roughly.
Carefully.
Almost gently.
Daniel immediately exited his vehicle.
Grace tried to follow.
He stopped her.
"Stay here."
"No!"
"If this is about me..."
"It needs to stay about me."
Daniel walked forward alone.
The cold wind howled between the pine trees.
The older kidnapper spoke first.
"We don't want the kid."
Daniel frowned.
"Then why take her?"
"So you'd come."
The man pushed Emma gently forward.
She ran.
Straight into Daniel's arms.
He knelt immediately.
"Are you hurt?"
Emma shook her head.
"They didn't hit me."
She whispered into his ear.
"The one with the dragon tattoo cried."
Daniel looked up.
The younger kidnapper quickly looked away.
Ashamed.
Something wasn't right.
A black helicopter suddenly appeared overhead.
Its blades thundered across the valley.
It landed in a nearby clearing.
Daniel's security team.
Within seconds, six trained agents surrounded the area.
The kidnappers didn't even try to escape.
Instead...
The older man slowly raised both hands.
"We surrender."
Daniel stared.
"This wasn't about ransom."
"No."
"Then what?"
The man reached into his jacket.
One security officer aimed his weapon.
"Don't!"
the kidnapper shouted.
"It's documents."
He slowly removed a sealed envelope.
"This is what they wanted destroyed."
Daniel cautiously accepted it.
"Who wanted it destroyed?"
The man's voice trembled.
"Hawthorne."
Grace stepped closer.
"Why?"
The man looked directly at Daniel.
"Because your wife wasn't supposed to die."
Silence.
The entire forest seemed to stop breathing.
Daniel's face drained of color.
"What... did you say?"
The man swallowed hard.
"The car accident three years ago..."
"It wasn't an accident."
Grace gasped.
Emma looked up in confusion.
Daniel couldn't speak.
The kidnapper continued.
"Hawthorne hired private investigators years ago."
"They were collecting leverage against powerful business competitors."
"They discovered your wife had uncovered fraudulent land acquisitions."
"They tried to scare her."
"They never intended..."
His voice broke.
"...for her car to go off the mountain road."
Daniel felt the world tilt beneath him.
For three years...
He had blamed fate.
Cancer had taken Evelyn.
But before that...
Someone had already tried to destroy the woman he loved.
The older man pointed at the envelope.
"Everything we stole is inside."
"Financial records."
"Property transfers."
"Witness statements."
"The names of everyone involved."
"Grace was never the target."
"Emma was never the target."
"You were."
Daniel slowly opened the envelope.
The first page contained dozens of signatures.
The second...
Bank transfers.
The third...
One photograph.
It showed Evelyn Whitaker standing outside Morrison's Diner.
Grace stood beside her.
Both women were smiling.
Emma, only three years old then, sat on Evelyn's shoulders laughing.
Daniel stared at the picture.
He whispered,
"Evelyn knew Grace..."
Grace covered her mouth in shock.
"I... I remember that day."
"Evelyn volunteered at the church food pantry."
"She brought winter coats for children."
"She told Emma she could grow up to be anything."
Tears streamed down Daniel's face.
His wife had known this family.
Years before either of them realized how deeply their lives would become connected.
Emma quietly reached up...
And wiped away one of Daniel's tears with her tiny mitten.
"My mommy says crying isn't weak."
Daniel smiled through the tears.
"What does she say it is?"
Emma squeezed his hand.
"It's love..."
"...coming out because your heart is too full to keep it inside."
Daniel closed his eyes.
For the first time since Evelyn died...
He allowed himself to cry.
Not because he was broken.
But because a little girl with two leftover pancakes had unknowingly led him back to hope.
Yet none of them noticed the final page hidden beneath the others.
A handwritten note.
Only six words.
"The real mastermind is still free."
And beneath those words...
May you like
A name that would shock Daniel more than anything he had uncovered so far.
His own younger brother.
